Conscription!

ALRIGHT, whats the deal with conscription if your enrolled in a University/CC? Do you get to stay or Uncle Sam wants your college butt and there are no exceptions. I ask because it seems likely they will bring back the draft in the U.S within the next 3 years. Also, does it matter what your studying and all that, I wouldn't change my intended major just for that but I'm still curious.

I know I'll be going to Canada if college students don't get an exception...

Do you know what its been like before? Any old relatives or neighbors you've heard some stories from?

BTW, yea right Canada is a good place to hide, a small hole in the middle of Alaska sounds more like it.

During the Vietnam War, there was an exemption for college students until graduation.

Whether the exemption will be reinstated for any "new" draft, or what that draft will look like, or whether there will any draft at all, is anyone's guess.

I am fairly sure there would be no exception for college-goers, because so many people go to college now, it's not like there'd be a shortage.

THERE BETTER NOT BE A DRAFT!!!!

ps: hypothetically speaking, there would have to be an exception for college students ( even after graduation). if not, then there wouldn't be enough doctors or lawyers ( b/c people would get drafted before they got into med or law school). same goes for other professions.

I find it highly unlikely that they will draft.

<a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2007/08/11/wdraft111.xml%5B/url%5D">http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2007/08/11/wdraft111.xml</a></p>

Thats the article I think most accurately promises a draft so this is why I'm a little paranoid.

KaznackFCRC: Do you mean CC students or University students also? With everyone getting rejected, there bound to have enough people from just CC and people not in school at all.

The U.S draft board has already said that in the event of a new draft it will no longer be.

"A rich mans war - a poor mans fight"

So yes, If there is another draft all men and ** women ** who are in the age range will be eligible for the draft.

College students will be no exception - times are very different now then back then.

Good thing I do not live in the United States :)

seekinghelp-did you happen to notice that that newspaper was British, or was that just me?

omggggggggggggggggg. Whats the point of all these lower than middle class people working their butts off to get into a good college then. This place is beginning to really suck.

HisGraceFillsMe: What does it matter if its British, they're talking about the U.S, its not like they made up the story.

What's the point?

The point is that if you DON'T get an education, you'll never be able to better yourself.

Think about it. Why is it that all of the people in Africa are trapped in poverty?

Because they can't go to school. (okay now no flaming I know there are a ton of other reasons but this is a SUPER humongo biggie.)

I guess I better try for Italian duel citizenship so I can move there when the draft is reinstituted. I support the troops and all, but I'd be completely useless to the military. :p

Not only is it a British article (which could be argued), but it's talking about the BUSH administration. Only a little over a year left on that one...

Bigvick- the law would have to be changed first for that to happen; women still can't be drafted.

(Besides, if we could be, I'd keep myself in college or get knocked up. :D)

Well thank God the only candidate so far who has said he is all for National Service is John Edwards so don't vote for him. I assume even the girls wouldn't want a draft because they have/want boyfriends, husbands, and brothers.

So Do Not Vote For John Edwards.

It's ok, girls will be drafted along with their boyfriends/husbands/brothers :)

They have already said that in the event of a draft in the future women will be included (so yes they will pass a law to allow it)

Do not be worrying about a draft though. There was a bill in congress a few years ago to reinstate the draft.

Voted down: 402 - 2

But we warned of the war with Iran that is coming (This will mean a draft)

Yeah because everyone knows that drafted soldiers don't fight as hard as soldiers who signed up to be there. So there's pretty much no point in drafting.

Hopefully times are different now and it wouldn't be as easy to take thousands of citizens against their will, hand them a gun, and make them slaughter people aimlessly.

Happens every day in Uganda, and to children no less. :(
