[li] What You Do For Pleasure: Interest in East Asia (7/10)[/li][] Department at MIT: EECS (6/10)
[] Trait Most Proud Of: Malleability, probably best essay (9/10)
[] World You Come From: Very bad, same ones I submitted for UIUC (5/10)
[] Significant Challenge: Robotics, also terrible (5/10)
[] Other (teacher’s subject, 1-10 rating, details):[/ul][] Teacher Recommendation #1: Geometry Honors and AP Stats teacher, know him well, on better terms than with most other teachers, did not read letter
[] Teacher Recommendation #2: AP Lang teacher and tennis coach, know him well, on better terms than with most other teachers, did not read letter

Other[ul]
[] Date Submitted App: 10/14? Mid-October

[] Ethnicity: Asian/Chinese
[] Gender: Female
[] Income Bracket Range: ~$150K
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation, recruited athelete, development): Literally none for MIT[/ul]
[/li]

Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Interview, awards? Not USAMO, but made it to Math Prize for Girls
[] Weaknesses: Essays
[] Why you think you were deferred? Essays were terrible; did not really bother to revise them and copied what I did for UIUC (which were also very bad).
[] What would you have done differently?: Essays, study more math (lol)[/ul]

General Comments & Advice: To everybody that was accepted, congratulations and enjoy your time at MIT! MIT used to be my dream school when I was younger (did not want to go to Harvard since my cousin went there), but things changed when I grew up. To everybody that was deferred, enjoy having one less person in the applicant pool. :stuck_out_tongue:

Decision: Deferred

[/ul]

Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (name, grade levels, leadership, description): Club Swimming (practice 6 days a week all year––9 years); High School Varsity Swimming (all four years, MVP Junior year, Captain Senior year); iPhone programming (Taught myself how to code. I’ve published 3 apps on the iTunes App Store. This was a major “thing” for me)
[] Job/Work Experience: none
[] Volunteer/Community Service: some, ~100 hours
[] Summer Experience: 2-a-days for swimming all summer, iPhone programming in my spare time[/ul]

Writing (Subject, 1-10 rating, details):[ul]
[] Essays:
[li] What You Do For Pleasure: (applied through QuestBridge––no regular application necessary)[/li][] Department at MIT: see above
[] Trait Most Proud Of: see above
[] World You Come From: see above
[] Significant Challenge: see above
[] Additional Essay/QB Essays: I thought these were pretty good. My 800 word Bio was pretty decent. So was the the challenge essay. My intellectual essay was about my love of programming, and how I explore math, science, and art through my apps. They were geared towards QuestBridge, not MIT, so take them as you will.
[] Other (teacher’s subject, 1-10 rating, details):[/ul][li] Teacher Recommendation #1: from my english teacher. It was really great, and very thoughtful. 8.5/10[/li][] Teacher Recommendation #2: I didn’t see the one from my math teacher. I’ve had her for Precalc, Calc AB, Calc BC, and Stats, so she knows me pretty well.
[] Counselor Rec: She barely knows me
[] Additional Info/Rec: I sent in the links to my apps on the iTunes App Store (all three are free). Unfortunately, I can’t see through Apple whether any downloads came from Massachusetts, so who knows if they actually tried them out :stuck_out_tongue:
[] Interview: My interviewer was really nice, and we had a good time. He cared a lot about my swimming and apps.
[] Art Supplement: none
Other[ul]
[] Date Submitted App: ~September 20th to QuestBridge, although I did send a brief “update” email to admissions after QuestBridge ended (about 2 weeks ago), when I was rolled into EA.
[] U.S. State/Territory or Country: Florida
[] School Type: Large public
[] Ethnicity: White
[] Gender: Male
[] Income Bracket Range: < 40k
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation, recruited athelete, development): Well, I did develop 3 iPhone/iPad apps all by myself––and they weren’t even fart apps or anything stupid! I’m also a QuestBridge Finalist.[/ul]
[/li]

Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: iPhone/iPad development, QuestBridge Finalist, 800 Math (SAT I), swimming
[] Weaknesses: Essays were geared towards QuestBridge, not MIT
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: What is there to say? MIT has a 65% deferral rate. Oh well… on to RD!
[] What would you have done differently?: nothing––I gave it my best shot, and did everything I could do. I guess I’m just not insta-admit material.[/ul]

Other Factors:

General Comments & Advice: Congratulations to all of you who were admitted! This was a disappointment, but in my opinion, its a whole lot better than being rejected. I’ll have another go in RD.

Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: I think I had an interesting focus in the arts and its relation to technology.

General Comments & Advice: Make sure you have a good counselor advising you throughout high school. I had very little directive from mine, and as a result the spread of my classes were rather lopsided. Standardized tests are hella important as well!

[li] Other (teacher’s subject, 1-10 rating, details):[] Teacher Recommendation #1: Physics, which was a total risk, because Physics is one of my weaker subjects. I’m not sure at all. People told me to watch out for his recommendations, but I’m fairly close to him, so I decided to give it a shot. However, I recommend you don’t take these risks! This ate away at me, because I wasn’t completely sure what kind of rec writer he was.[/li][] Teacher Recommendation #2: English, 10, We’re really close and she told me she wrote a fabulous rec, so I’m inclined to believe her.

[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Eeek I don’t know!
[] What would you have done differently?: Added a resume, added a violin supplement (maybe), made my essays a little more whimsical[/ul]

General Comments & Advice: Find out who you are and what kind of person you want to portray yourself as. Be as close to yourself as possible, and weave these essays to do that. Each part of your application is very important, so don’t slack off on any of it! Don’t ask teachers you’re unsure of to write you recommendations, and do research (from the seniors) to see which teachers they picked and what advice they have for you. Take advantage of the opportunities around you. Read the admissions blogs! Namely – “Applying Sideways” and “How to Write a College Essay.” Those two posts helped me tremendously, not only on my MIT app, but on all my other apps as well.

Congrats to everyone who made it! To those who didn’t – chin up! Being rejected/deferred from MIT does not lower your worth as a human being. You’re all fantastic people, and I wish you the best!

[] What would you have done differently?:[/ul] I totally procrastinated on the other schools I was planning on applying to for Regular Decision; bad idea guys!!! In terms of MIT though, I couldn’t have improved my app even if I had another month to refine it. So nothing.

Other Factors: Praying before bed seemed to help I guess. Just a little luck :)

General Comments & Advice: I am absolutely shocked! I just can’t believe I got in. I’m so relieved and happy and excited!!! My teachers/friends are going to get a boatload of MIT cupcakes on Monday!!! To future applicants, I had a lot of personality and enthusiasm in my app, and my recs/stats backed it up. Make sure that when you hit that “submit” button, you are ready to take a deep breath, smile, and say to yourself “I have no regrets.” To those who were deferred, the waiting sucks, I know. But you guys will be awesome no matter where you end up, even if it’s not MIT. To those who were rejected, everything happens for a reason. You just don’t know what it is yet.

General Comments & Advice:
My school is heavily focused on english and history and it doesn’t offer the greatest opportunities in math and science (No one has applied to MIT in over 5 years!) , so I don’t really have the support system for huge STEM competitions. But, I have tried to make the best of it and set myself apart. MIT is my first choice by far, and I really hope I get in RD.
