He has been admitted to Caltech. I thought that he stands a better chance at MIT than Caltech because of his many interests besides math and science.

Decision: Accepted

Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (name, grade levels, leadership, description): Piano (K-12), several state comp awards and a concerto performance w/ orch.
Clarinet (5-12), section leader @ school and band council VP, principal in youth orchestra, principal at regional orch, member All-State Band and Nat’l HS Honors Orch; a few state comp awards and concerto performances w/ 2 orchs (one professional).
Chinese School (K-12), student council Treasurer (10), helped volunteer and organize school events besides learning Chinese.
I listed NHS, Spanish NHS, Science NHS, etc. in the opt. section since they weren’t in my top 5.

[] Volunteer/Community Service: tutoring Spanish, playing benefit recitals, Chinese school events. Also this one organization I volunteer with that provides resources to local refugees.

Writing (Subject, 1-10 rating, details):[ul]
[] Essays:
[li] What You Do For Pleasure: figure skating. 7.[/li][] Department at MIT: Biological Engineering, although I also expressed interest in music and EECS depts (specifically CS or Molecular Bio/CS major). 8.
[] Trait Most Proud Of: optimism/ability to cheer others up/staying happy even when things aren’t so great. 8.
[] World You Come From: talked about my dad’s hardships in moving to America and how his work ethic/devotion has influenced me. 7.
[] Significant Challenge: learning a Beethoven sonata w/o left hand pinky after I slammed it in a car door. lol. 7.
[] Additional Essay/QB Essays: fighting stereotypes/learning to accept and embrace my cultural identity (as a minority in a very white suburban area). 7.
[] Other (teacher’s subject, 1-10 rating, details):[/ul]
[li] Teacher Recommendation #1: math teacher. He had me in 8th gr. for Alg II and again this year for Calc BC. No idea what he wrote haha. He did it 2 days before my earliest deadline after 6 weeks’ notice…[/li][] Teacher Recommendation #2: IB history teacher. She’s had me for past 2 years and was also my mentor for IB extended essay. I know she wrote a pretty good rec but I did sleep a lot in her class so I’m not sure how great it really was.
[] Counselor Rec: school switched me to a new counselor at beginning of this year but she was enthusiastic about writing a good rec. pretty sure hers was good, although the degree to which she knew me might seem a bit of a stretch (she wanted it to seem like we were super close).
[] Additional Info/Rec: n/a. should’ve asked my conductor. oh well.
[] Interview: 7. He seemed impressed with math contest and music achievements, but I do wish I’d waited to have my interview because I’d just gotten started with MITx’s Intro to CS/Programming and it would’ve been great to talk about, since I’m enjoying this exposure to CS.
[] Art Supplement: Piano-7 (not quite my top playing but really unusual/interesting rep.) Clarinet-8 (only included about 7.5 min but the quality of playing was excellent.) Strong teacher recs and arts resumes for both.
Other[ul]
[] Date Submitted App: 10/31
[] U.S. State/Territory or Country: AZ
[] School Type: public
[] Ethnicity: Asian
[] Gender: female
[] Income Bracket Range: ~$115K
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation, recruited athelete, development): nope. lol. Unless national-level musician counts? I contacted the conductor of the orch (who judged a comp I won earlier this year) and got no response -_- [/ul]
[/li]

Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Musical achievements on both instruments, grades/test scores/objective stats, started math @ HS in gr. 7 and physics @ HS in gr. 8. AP 5’s on two different languages. invited twice to audition for teen Jeopardy in LA! woooo
[] Weaknesses: no engineering/science competitions, experience, or awards. Head start in math was basically cancelled out with no math class soph year and repeating Trig/Precalc jr year (Calc BC is the highest class @ school but if taken as part of IB math, it must be done sr year.) Adcom obviously doesn’t know the scheduling details though so it looks like I slacked off/slowed down. No athletics. Stats and activities are pretty stereotypically Asian lol.
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I honestly can’t pinpoint one reason. Maybe it was because of my arts supps/musical activities. Or maybe it was because I just accepted the fact that I had few math/sciencey awards, didn’t try to portray myself that way, and just wrote the essays about myself as a person? who knows.
[] What would you have done differently?: Eh. I’m not complaining, since I got accepted. But I’d probably have waited just a bit longer for my interview, so I’d have more to talk about, and I would’ve liked to submit a rec from my conductor, since he knows a side of me and my character that my teachers don’t really see.[/ul]

Other Factors:

General Comments & Advice: I didn’t have lab internships, a ton of leadership experience, or even volunteer at a science related organization. My advice at this point would just be to find something you really like, but do it really well (interviewer actually said this). It’s like an identifying factor to make you stand out from the pile. I hear so many kids, even those with Intel awards and high scores, get turned down. It seems that they value not only students with awesome IMO/Siemens-type prizes, but kids who are academically solid, have dedicated themselves to one or two particular EC’s, and have excelled in those.

Other Factors:

General Comments & Advice: Gotta do what you love, take advantage of what your school gives you, and STAY HUMBLE! No matter how “deserving” someone may seem, luck & chance always factor in.
Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: test scores, GPA, female
[] Weaknesses: some essays, ECs make me appear more boring than I actually am, school reputation
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: My school is pretty mediocre about helping students with the whole college application process and I think it was reflected in my application. My ECs aren’t very diverse and my essays could have benefited from some serious proofreading, but that falls on me in the end.
[] What would you have done differently?: Patented all of my marvelous ideas and gone on 3 mission trips to the moon. Just kidding, I would have definitely spent more time on essays. And gone to the Ross Program at Ohio State over the summer, which would have been a) more cost effective and b) more productive than what I actually did. Darn parents
[/ul]
Other Factors:

Reflection
Strengths: My essays showed my dedication to school
Weaknesses: SATs were terrible relatively speaking, i did not have an extremely long list of ec, i am a white male that is not in poverty from massachusetts trying to be an engineer
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: The interview was outstanding and my teacher rec was out of this world
What would you have done differently?: Retaken SATs earlier (took in december in case of deferral

Other Factors: i had an engineering experience most students do not have by their senior year (Design projects, functioning robots, independent projects, etc.)

General Comments & Advice:I still cant believe i got in. I guess im living proof that you need to just try it out because who knows what could happen. I do not want to cut myself short, because i know i am an outstanding student who offers more than just intelligence to a school, but i did not really think i was MIT worthy.

General Comments & Advice: A lot has happened in the past month and a half that I think will really boost my app for RA, and if not, then I got accepted to GA Tech which is my second choice and know that everything is meant to work out the way it does so I’m happy. :)

Other Factors:

**General Comments & Advice: MIT is a phenomenal school full of phenomenal students. I honestly thought my chances of getting in were slim but not impossible. I think the main things they look for are a) hardwork and determination, b) commitment to the things that you love, c) a desire to use what you learn to do what you love and d) what you think makes you unique and who you are. You have to show why you think you are special, so they can see it. **
