Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (name, grade levels, leadership, description): Research (11, 12) - summer program summer '11, in the high school lab winter '11-'12, in a university lab summer+fall '12. Robotics (9, 10) - Team captain both years, awards already mentioned - FTC. Varsity Baseball (11, 12) - pitcher. I’ve been playing in rec leagues since I was 5, as well. [] Trait Most Proud Of: Inquisitiveness/curiosity, 8. Pretty MITesque essay.
[] World You Come From: Family and friends, 6-7. Wasn’t a huge fan of this one.
[] Significant Challenge: Waitlisted to NCSSM. Either like a 5 or a 9, depending on who you ask. I got in, eventually.
[] Additional Essay/QB Essays: Research is my passion - described all of my projects to date (1 cs/modeling, 2 chem).[/ul]
[] Other (teacher’s subject, 1-10 rating, details):[ul]
[li] Teacher Recommendation #1: Math teacher. He’s amazing. I’ve had him for 5 different math classes, and absolutely love him. 10.[/li][] Teacher Recommendation #2: French teacher. She’s nice, and I knew her outside of class, because her son went to the same summer program as me. Maybe a 7?
[] Counselor Rec: I’ve met with her a handful of times, but she has >100 students. She’s really nice though. I couldn’t hazard a guess to the rating.
[] Additional Info/Rec: My research mentor at the university lab. He offered to write my rec before I could ask him, and likes me more than most undergrads in the lab. Probably like an 11/10. [/ul]

[] Art Supplement: Submitted a dozen or so photos I’ve taken - 6 have been published, 2 in a state wildlife magazine as part of an art contest, 4 in a school art magazine.
Other[ul]

Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Research, definitely. I love it, and I think that came through in all of my essays.
[] Weaknesses: None that were too large
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Research?
[] What would you have done differently?: Not gotten 2 B’s, but that’s mostly a personal wish.[/ul]

Other Factors: I submitted my art supplement on Nov 1, under MIT’s famous dome. I don’t think this had anything to do with my admissions, but it seemed fitting. I was visiting MIT over tri break.

General Comments & Advice:

[ul]
[li]To the accepted: CONGRATS! I’m so excited, and I’m sure you are too. It’s an awesome feeling.
[/li]

To the deferred: I know what it feels like (see: “Significant Challenge” essay…). It sucks, and I know it. Make the best backup plans you can, get into some other great schools, and then when you’re accepted RD, breathe again, and forget your status was anything other than accepted. As my friend said “they probably just wanted to read your application again, because it was so good.”[/ul]

Decision: Deferred

Objective:[ul][] SAT I: R 700, W 690, M 690, Essay 10 (2080)

[] Volunteer/Community Service: read to elementary school children, work with the mentally and emotionally disabled, started a tutoring program at my school, work with a local animal adoption coalition

[li] What You Do For Pleasure: Springboard Diving, 7, it’s like flying[/li][] Department at MIT: Mathematics, 10, I see empty chalkboards with excitement
[] Trait Most Proud Of: Personal Drive, 9, I had a concussion two years ago and still remained in my challenging classes despite severe brain damage

[] Gender: Female
[] Income Bracket Range: 250,000-300,000
[li] Hooks: concussion[/ul]
[/li]

Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: ACT score, extracurriculars, recs, essay
[] Weaknesses: grades, SAT score, AP scores
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I’m a little bit below average for an MIT applicant, the EA deferral was no surprise
[] What would you have done differently?: nothing, I spent weeks laboring over my app[/ul]

General Comments & Advice: Generally, only the geniuses are admitted to schools early, those who have written novels or gone to Africa, or discovered carcinogens. If you were deferred, it is not because MIT doesn’t want you, try not to be bitter. You’re still in the running.

Decision: Deferred

Objective:[ul]
[]SAT I (breakdown M/CR/W/Essay): 790/800/780/8 (2370)
[]SAT I superscore (breakdown M/CR/W/Essay): Same as above
[]ACT (breakdown): 36M/34CR/33W/36Sci
[]ACT superscore (breakdown): 35 composite, same as above
[]SAT II (subject, score): 800 M2, 790 Physics
[]Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0
[]Weighted GPA: 101.5 (out of 100)
[]Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 5/600
[]AP (place score in parentheses): Calc BC(5), Human Geography(5), World History(5), Physics B(5), Physics C: Mechanics(5), Physics C:E&M(4, didn’t study, didn’t take the class. Went in blind), US History(4), Comp Sci(5), English Lang and Comp(5)
IB (place score in parentheses): n/a (IB not offered)
[]Senior Year Course Load: AP Spanish, AP US Gov, AP Macro econ, AP Chem, AP Lit, Calc II and Calc III (dually enrolled for math at number 4 engineering school in the US according to US news)
[]Number of other EA applicants in your school: 2 or 3, all of them got deferred.
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel, etc.): None that I can think of
[]Common Awards (AP Scholar, honor roll, NM things, etc.): AP Scholar(regular, w/ distinction, National; don’t know which is better, doesn’t really matter), Honors societies (Beta, NEHS, NHS, Mu Alpha Theta, SNHS, SHH), a few in school outstanding recognitions for science grades, Academic Letter (3yrs in a row), Helped team place in top 3 for a regional Calculus competition, Top Science score for state Academic Decathlon (and at regionals, along with other recognitions), various Science olympiad awards (mainly at regional and invitational level), Top 10 in 4 events at TSA state competition, a bunch of other stuff along those lines[/ul]

Subjective:[ul]
[]Extracurriculars (name, grade levels, leadership, description): Science Olympiad, Academic Decathlon, Spanish Club, the honor societies listed, and different ECs I did in the past but did not have time for this year (including VEX robotics and TSA)
[]Job/Work Experience: None, although I tutor and get paid on occasion
[]Volunteer/Community Service: A bunch of hours because of honor societies and a purely volunteer club I was in for two years.
[]Summer Experience: None, no way to pay for summer programs and I actively looked for other ways to gain experience, but there aren’t opportunities in my town for Science related fields/interests[/ul]

Writing (Subject, 1-10 rating, details):[ul]
[]Essays: I wrote these in about 2 hours, and was having a hard time because I like anecdotes and explanations, but with their word limits, I was finding a hard time to truly reflect my personality, although each essay was true. As such, I think my essays are major weaknesses.
[li]What You Do For Pleasure: Intense partner games (specifically catchphrase), 6-7[/li][]Department at MIT: ChemE (I want to work with nanotechnology and/or energy), 6, well written, sounded like me, but they would have to know me to know that.
[]Trait Most Proud Of: Strangeness/Enigmatic characteristics, 6, well written, was true, but didn’t have room for anecdotes or truly embodying statements. I wrote a similar essay, but it was 900 words, and there was literally no way to compact it.
[]World You Come From: Small town/suburbs(to me, not necessarily on a larger scale), supportive family and community, this was probably my worst one, 4-5
[]Significant Challenge: A state program that I had been denied from twice without another chance, talked about how I had to realize my limits, 7, it was personal, but now that I think about it, I should’ve mentioned why I didn’t get in and that it was something more of hobby than what I want to do (it was a program for Language arts)
[]Additional Essay/QB Essays:n/a [/ul]

Supplements(teacher’s subject, 1-10 rating, details):
I didn’t read them, but my teachers like me, so I’ll take a stab.[ul]

[]Teacher Recommendation #1: 7, Physics B&C; Had him for two years, known him for 3; sponsor for club I’m active in; as a science teacher though, I’m not too confident in his writing ability, but he likes me. Says he always has an extra paragaph for the people in the club, so it should be good. Got great grades in his class (one of the top 3 students)
[]Teacher Recommendation #2: I’d give it a 9-10; She’s an English teacher, so I’m confident that it at least sounded good. I was one of her favorite students last year, and I talk to her outside of class, after school. She didn’t let me read it but was telling me about how she felt like she wrote a lot for me because the rec was about 2 pages.
[]Counselor Rec: Didn’t read it, don’t want to take a stab. My old counselor got a position as an administrator in a completely different district, so my counselor is completely new. We had an hour meeting, and she seemed nice and liked what I told her about me, so hopefully it was good.
[]Additional Info/Rec: 7, Didn’t read it, and she said she finished it in a 3 hour block while she was teaching. I had it for two years, and I was one of her favorite teachers; she’s a foreign language teacher and knows I do well, so hopefully it was good. She knows enough about me, because I used to sit by her desk due to my last name and her seating chart.
[]Interview: 6-7; Could’ve gone better. When I get nervous, I talk 10x faster than I normally do( and I talk really fast as it is), so I feel like if I had slowed down it would have gone better. She seemed to catch all of it though, because she would engage in conversations about certain things I said. At one point we started talking about books and TV, and I gave her a few suggestions and she gave me a few. She was friendly, and I sent her a thank you note.

Reflection[ul]
[]Strengths: Test Scores, grades, Teacher recs
[]Weaknesses: My essays were well written (I love writing, and hopefully they gleamed that from my diction), and they were true, but I don’t think they gave much personality unless the person already knew me(which obviously they don’t); no really outstanding science or math awards, no work experience
[]Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Gender/race, no major awards, lack of opportunities, as well as lack of personal projects(I don’t really have money to engage in anything beyond purely book and internet research).
[]What would you have done differently?: Spent more time on essays, making sure that my voice truly echoed in each word so they knew who I was; Written an optional essay that I now remember thinking about from 2 years ago after visiting MIT(I think it would have helped a lot).

[li]Other Factors: “and at once I knew, I was not magnificent.” [/ul]
[/li]

General Comments & Advice:
I know a lot of it comes down to how they think you’ll do there. If you have the grades, they’ll defer you, but there is so much more than grades and test scores. I wish I would have spent the past few years finding some means to make myself stand out, but I would say a lot of factors keep all of us from being able to enter into competitions, or doing research. I hope they realize that it’s just not possible for everyone to have the perfect application with major awards, but I know that the people who do get in and end up there will be happy and a good fit. So good luck to everyone! If you get in, congratulations! If you don’t, it’s fine, you’ll most likely succeed anywhere. It’s what you do with your education that matters, not where you go.

**Other Factors: none really; MIT does not do legacy, which I think is great.

General Comments & Advice: Of course, I am incredibly excited I was accepted. I think my application demonstrates that MIT does not look for a perfect student with a perfect GPA and a perfect SAT. [] Additional Essay/QB Essays: I talked about how I was extremely advanced for being an 11th grade (and still would be if I were in 12th grade) and how I was without a doubt ready for college. It was extremely well written, I’d give it a 10.

[] Strengths: Creativity, well rounded-ness, involvement in a variety of activities, 2-3 good essays

[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I think my last essay really showed how I could overcome challenges, and overall I just portrayed myself as an ambitious person.
[] What would you have done differently?: I would have rewritten my first essay. I would have prepared more anecdotes for my interview so I wouldn’t be stuttering over the same points again and again.[/ul]

Other Factors:

General Comments & Advice: Try to portray yourself on the essays. Really, I think over trying to portray yourself as a Grecian god incarnate, they want to see a person. Let yourself show a little weakness, but of course overwhelm that with your enthusiasm and passion. Also prepare a lot of anecdotes for your interview. Best of luck!

Writing (Subject, 1-10 rating, details):
Essays:
QB applicant:

Wrote about how an individual’s inspiration can influence an community. (Decent)

Wrote about a conversation that I had with president Obama on my first day of school which led to a Wolf Blitzer interview.

Several short bits about my tough background, etc.

Teacher Recommendation #1: Honors Chem and AP Bio - She initially wrote several pages which had to be chopped down significantly. Great relationship over several years with many fun projects (lego shotgun/jet engine/acid rain) - Known for her work with Dolly the sheep
Teacher Recommendation #2: AP US History - Great writer from what I’ve heard. Had to use as a backup because my number one choice teacher and quizbowl coach had surgery complications and had to retire. I barely scraped an A, but she was a great teacher to talk to so I went for it.
Counselor Rec: Probably decent. He is a great writer and has been active with me in a couple clubs for awhile.
Additional Info/Rec:

1 - From my boss. I didn’t read it, but it made my mom cry.

2 - From my coach. Probably not amazing (Non native English speaker) But he knows me better than most at my school.

Interview: Went very well. The interviewer has kept in contact and has given me advice through the whole process.

Other

U.S. State/Territory or Country: VA
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: White (Decent amount of Native American. Both parents are from Montana)
Gender: Male
Income Bracket Range: Low… :stuck_out_tongue:
Hooks (URM, first generation, recruited athelete, development): URM maybe?? QB, First Gen, Recruited Athlete

Reflection
Strengths: Meh, I’m average. Knowing that my work is being used by the army is pretty cool though.
Weaknesses: Definitely essays. They were done late on the questbridge app because I didn’t know about it until a few days before, and I didn’t know that I couldn’t update them.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: There was an incredible applicant pool. The one person I know that got in was beyond exemplary.
What would you have done differently?: Nothing. But I’m not going down without a fight!

Other Factors:
Not much else. I’ve begun an unstoppable blitzkrieg that MIT will not be able to resist! :stuck_out_tongue:
Its my #1 choice, but it has been incredible simply applying. I love it!

General Comments & Advice:
Ironically, I found out I was deferred while at the magnet highschool that I was rejected from (TJHSST of course). Life’s a beach eh? (Im just playin in the sand)

Decision: Accepted

D made it in. High, SAT/ACT scores, but not perfect. OK SAT Subject Tests (MIT did not receive the Dec 2012 SAT Subject Test, which are much better). Outstanding academics, top in her class in a highly competitive school. Lots of AP classes. Math through Calc 3 as a Junior. Visited MIT and Interviewed.

No “hooks” I can think of, other than being part of the school’s FIRST Robotics team. 50/50 Asian/Caucasian, so no break there.

Female, Mid-west, typical top in her class (all subjects) Asian kid. A pleasant Christmas Gift.

Decision: Accepted

[] Significant Challenge: losing my race at league finals (talked about how it triggered lack of confidence in myself)

[] Gender: female
[] Income Bracket Range: uhmm…I think 100+ but I’m not sure
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation, recruited athelete, development):[/ul][/li]URM, recruited athlete

Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: National Achievement scholar? pretty involved in school, wide range of interests
[] Weaknesses: low physics subject test score, nothing exceptional in my application…
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: In all honesty, I have no idea why I was accepted, especially after reading this forum because everyone else had much higher test scores than me. I guess my essays were pretty original, and the MIT track coach did write me a letter of rec, so that must have helped. Also I think my interview went really well
[] What would you have done differently?:[/ul] Taken the SAT more than once (I honestly just didn’t want to take it again), I also would have studied for the Physics subject test (I’d never taken AP physics and really didn’t know very much)

Other Factors:

General Comments & Advice: Make yourself sound interesting. In all honesty, I was just super honest in my application. Making mix cd’s was a completely random topic and has nothing to do with my major, it’s just something I honestly enjoy doing. I talked about how I’m an openminded person who is trying to erase my social prejudices, and I talked about how I love computers. Don’t be a “one trick pony”, talk about why you love the things you love, and have fun in the interview. Also don’t wait until the last minute to do the application. But MOST IMPORTANTLY, don’t freak out or cry if you don’t get in because there are thousands of smart people who don’t get in every year. If you don’t get in, it must not be the right college for you.

[li] Hooks (URM, first generation, recruited athlete, development): nothing incredibly impressive like that…?[/ul]
[/li]

Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: NASA stuff, not a great school, recommendations
[] Weaknesses: lack of dedication to any one activity
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I don’t know; sometimes I honestly think they have so many well-qualified applicants they just start yanking names out of a hat
[] What would you have done differently?: Worked harder at the beginning of my high school career, started quiz bowl sooner, focused more on a few activities[/ul]

Other Factors:

General Comments & Advice: I’ve still got the same chance as any other RA applicant. With my qualifications I’ll get into a good college, even if it’s not MIT, Yale, et cetera. I calculated that being deferred by MIT puts one in the top one-half of one percent of all college applicants; that’s something for anyone to be proud of in and of itself.

Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: ECs, ACT, AP scores, courseload
[] Weaknesses: No major awards/competitions
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I’ve worked hard all my life and taken advantage of every opportunity I had.
[] What would you have done differently?:[/ul] Participate in science/math competitions…never heard of them until this year.

General Comments & Advice: Congrats to the other EA admits, good luck to the deferred (not much longer now!), and to the rest, don’t let it get you down. There are LOTS of great schools out there and college is great no matter where it is - you’ll probably have just as much fun anywhere as you would have at MIT.

WOOHOO! I’m the first student accepted to MIT from my town/high school in 40 years! :D
