Anyone know when all the construction at Porter is going to be finished? It's one of my top choices for the colleges but I don't think I'd like living there as much if it was still being built/renovated while I'm there.

The construction isn’t that bad. I had them building a ramp right under my window when I first moved in, but I can also sleep through a jackhammer no problem so I’m little weird. And I couldn’t hear it at all with my window shut (granted, I don’t face the Building A construction, I had a different one to deal with which finished weeks ago).

Building A is due to be completed by fall 2010 because it is needed as housing ;). We’re in trouble if it’s not finished.

LOL The B building was also supposed to be finished by the time we moved in, but I think we all know how that turned out.

As for my construction experience, I don’t face the A building construction… However, my room does face the road between Porter/Kresge, which is used by ALL the trucks and machinery that go to the quad, so early in the morning, it is louder than I even the jackhammers.

But if all goes well, that won’t be happening next year and nobody will have to deal with major construction.

The dining hall is done, the A building is progressing, and with any luck, the construction will be limited to minor annoyances. Trust me, the people at Porter make it worth it in the end :)

Thanks guys, that’s pretty reassuring to hear! I’m ranking Porter as my number two college on my SIR after Merrill, so we’ll see what happens. Even if I end up at Merrill, I’ll probably be visiting the Porter dining hall a lot because it looks like a great place to be.

Thanks again (:

B building was at least livable And it wasn’t any major construction going on from what I’ve been told (I moved in during the winter after the painting was finally finished). They’re not going to still be building the new floors come fall 2010. I have noticed they’re starting to do some work on some Saturdays now, though. Making up for lost time due to the rain maybe?

I still can’t bring myself to call the dining hall complete since we don’t have patio access yet. But at least we can eat at the dining hall now! I’m sad, though, I oopsed and slept through college night tonight since I’m used to eating at 2pm and going to bed sometime between 3 and 4. And I couldn’t eat before 2pm because of class. At least I remembered to stop by Oakes/8’s dining hall this morning and grad a little something to eat.

And I think I just sleep like a log XD. I face the back access road behind Porter and I get the construction trucks (and the fire trucks whenever someone pulls an alarm here). But yeah, I hardly notice anything ever.

Funny story, though. The two times I’ve been woken up by noise was the day they finished the ramp on the back side of Porter (the lack of a jackhammer woke me up XD) and when a woodpecker was going to town on a tree branch.

rectangleshorts is right, though. The people here are wonderful (as I’m sure they are at the other colleges too). Everyone was extremely welcoming of me coming in mid-year and have all been very friendly.

Worst case basis, if you hate where you end up (even if you thought you’d like it), you can always request to change. You have to be careful to not lose your housing guarantee when doing it and it’s not something I’d recommend, but it is an option.
