I've heard advice recently from multiple sources that it is always good to email your admissions rep to get "on their radar." I would do this, but I have a few doubts. I would think that an already swamped admissions reader won't want any more work, and that they would be unlikely to remember any communication. Thoughts?

Your thoughts are spot on. Admissions reps for schools that actively recruit possible applicants would want to know you b/c they are hoping for your application – the so-called “demonstrated interest”. Some schools factor this in.

Reps from selective schools, which have no reason to court applicants and frankly don’t factor in anyone’s “demonstrated interest”, you’ll be annoying them.

Thanks T26E4- I imagined that colleges with more applicants than they want or can deal with don’t want one more communication.

Not necessarily, their contact information is available for a reason, but it won’t help you.
