Alright it’s down to Amherst and Brown for me and in terms of academics, Brown beats Amherst but I just can’t let go of the idea of a tight-knit community that is present at Amherst. If someone can enlighten me about the student body that would be great. I was only able to attend the tour at Brown and I did not really get the chance to see students interact.

So basically, I just need a few questions and possibly misconceptions cleared up:

1.Brown’s rep for being full to the brim of potheads – is it an overblown exaggeration? I know there is a drug scene at every college so would you say that in actuality, Brown should just be lumped with the others, its drug use comparable to most colleges?

I wouldnt really consider myself prudish but just to clear out assumptions, would you say that many people have problems with roommates who bring back boyfriends/girlfriends to their dorm and hook-up?

I guess what I’m really trying to say is that do people just eventually find their own clique?

In my experience, Brown is no different in prevalence of use, actually a bit lower than many large state school, but we are more out in the open about it.

Everyone has a problem with this if it’s not somewhat discussed before hand. No one cares if you have some ground rules established to respect each other’s space. This is true everyone and anywhere you go.

Of course people eventually find their way to a place they feel they fit in. This is true just about everywhere.

Just to comment real quick re: question 1: I really think our reputation for pothead-ism is wholly undeserved. I’ve smelled just as much pot or more in the dorm hallways at many other schools I’ve been to as at Brown. I think I went my first two years at Brown without actually seeing pot being smoked once - I know it was around, but I just wasn’t in that social circle. And it’s not like I was a homebody - I was a big partier.

There just isn’t that much pot at Brown, unless you’re looking for it.
