I've heard a rumor that Cornell is known to take in more Canadian students than most other ivies/schools in general. anyone got anything to back this up/disprove it ?

This is true, both due to Cornell's historical relationship with Canada, as well as its size and proximity to the GTA. Ned Harkness was one of the first coaches in American college hockey to actively recruit Canadian players, and well, its kind of hard for any hockey fan not to attend Cornell once you learn that Ken Dryden played for the Big Red.

Look at the hockey roster:
Cornell University - 2008-09 Men's Ice Hockey Roster

big red hockey games play the canadian anthem and then the us anthem since most of the team members are canadian, i've met a fair share of canadians on campus, mostly from Vancouver or Toronto region.

big red hockey games play the canadian anthem? yikes...didnt know that...that'd be like playing the mexican anthem at soccer games in texas >_>

It's a pretty common occurrence across the ECAC, done as a courtesy by the pep bands. Although some schools notably do not play Oh, Canada.

Have you not been to a hockey game? Or are you just one of the facetimers who always show up ten minutes late?

unfortunately i have not been to a hockey game...

and yeah i'm of the mindset we shouldnt play their anthem...i doubt they play ours...

since when does showing respect have to be "you scratch our back we'll scratch yours"?

alright, so the big picture i'm getting: cornell + canadian = :)

sadly, i don't actively partake in our nation's great pastime but this thread has allowed me to dream again. three more months until admission results...

The NHL plays both anthems before every game, no matter what country.

And why shouldn't we play the Canadian anthem? Out of respect for one of our strongest and most important allies in the world? Out of respect for the fact that so many student athletes come from Canada and that Cornell has long had historical ties to Canada? Out of respect that it's basically a hockey tradition throughout North America? Out of respect that it's a damn good song and many people enjoy singing along with it?

That's alright. There is still curling and drinking beer.

YEs we do play the US anthem. And just like baseball and football are mainly US sports, hockey is the most popular sport in Canada. Most of the US teams have a majority of Canadians on their rosters!

If more Canadian students apply to or enroll at Cornell than any other Ivy, that would certainly be due to the greater geographic proximity, the larger student population, and the greater diversity of studies at Cornell. But of course there's no advantage from an admissions standpoint.

And I'd also like to say for the record that I have no prejudice against Canadians despite the fact that they're dumber and uglier than us. Or due to the fact that they won the War of 1812 and burned some of our cities down.

Canadian Pride!

I just noticed that our national colours(Red and White) are the same as Cornell's colours...

ffhrea:

"they're dumber and uglier than us"...LMAO seriously? Just look at G. Bush and Miss Teen South Carolina...No offense, but we own you guys on all fields(except in military power and destroying other countries)...

Just wait until Miss Teen South Carolina runs for public office in another couple decades - and she'll be one of our better ones!

And watch what you say, hoser, or we might just turn that military might on your maple leaf lovin' arses. Don't say it can't be done. The War of 1812 hasn't been forgotten by everyone down here. Your 13 provinces would nicely fit in as the 51st through 63rd states. That's 26% growth. Not bad at all for a war that would last about an hour. The mounties ain't what they used to be.

Not to mention destroying our own country.

Not only do they play "Oh Canada" at every Hockey game, but the crowd "Lynah Faithful" stand and face the large Canadian Flag and sing "without sheet music" the words to the Canadian National Anthem. One of Cornell's advantages in hockey is that Canadian players know that they will be welcomed and feel at home , The current coach and all coaches for the last 40 years are Canadians, and a Cornell degree is held in such high esteem in Canada that for the few hockey players smart enough and diligent enough it is the one thing deemed worthy of delaying entry in to the NHL farm system.

At one time ( not sure about now) they could also play the other Canadian pass time (box lacrosse) as an intrumural sport.

As somebody who lives in a border city and resides in Canada during the summers, I must say I hear it a lot. So it never struck me as particularly odd that it would be played at college hockey games until I attended my first away game where the Cornell pep band had to step in and play it for the home team's arena.

It's such a great song. Sing along now...

O Canada!
Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.
With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free!
