Cornell Chance Me Please!!

Deferred: Many of you may be extremely stressed out as I am. The only thing I wanted was withdrawal my other applications, deposit and enroll. Now we begin with another painful waiting period to find out more news.
I am the valedictorian of my class, 96 GPA. I currently am taking New Visions Medical Career Program which is amazing interdisciplinary style learning situation where we rotate around 27 rotations of a hospital learning by a lot of hands on experience. Besides that I only have room for AP Bio. I pulled a 100% in Bio first marking period, and an overall 99.5%. Sent this to Cornell.
My ultimate goal is to end up with my M.D. I live in the finger lakes in new york and Cornell has always been my dream school, therefore I applied ED. However i was deferred.
I still long to gain admittance and am hoping for any help!
There was a mix up with my October SAT scores where they came very late! I didnt receive them until November 26th. My first set of scored:
Critical Reading: 650
Math: 580
Writing:630
New Scores:
Critical Reading: 680
Math:610
Writing: 590
Now i understand the SAT scores arent completely up to par with my competing peers. However the new set of scores brought my total to a 1290! Much better than before. I am almost positive that because the scores came too late, my application was reviewed with the old scores and i was still deferred rather than rejected. My recommendations were glowing and my essays were great! I spent weeks on just the essays, very personal.
Now between the Valedictorian, NVMCP, first marking period avg, extracurriculars, recommendations, and essays I hoped to have the low math SAT score overlooked.
Do you think that the new scores will make a difference this time around?
Any other help would be great....Cornell is the only university I can see myself at.
thanks

I think the SAT was the reason why you were deferred :/

Ya  i couldn’t bring them up! But if they used the old scores while reviewing my application and still deferred me it meant i had some good hooks right? because those sats were REALLY BAD for Cornell. So I’m hoping the increased scores will help…

Yea…is that really good?

why would grade inflation be terrible?

Yes, I understand the scores are low but they are not the only thing the college looks at. If they had my 580 math score when they deferred me and didn’t reject me then obviously i have something going for me. The fact that they increased is what im hoping will help. Its not all about the SAT’s

That is what it seems like but I also had the math award (highest avg in math) my junior year for precalc. So its not like im math illiterate…for some reason I just cant do well during the SAT math. Cornell saw that on my application. Why would they defer me with such low scores and not just reject me if there wasn’t a plus side?!

I run track full time, sectional athlete, fine arts seminar, national honor society, internation club since 7th (treasurer) varsity club.
Also work experience:
Summer cleaner at school, busser/dishwasher at winery restaurant, worked at a boy scout camp and ran rifle and shot gun ranges. Also have been with step dad who does construction since 10. Cornell also knows all of that.

So should I definitely try to raise scores again or should I bank on the increase they didn’t have during first review? Also New Visions teacher said she is going to write me letter or rec. She is well known in the admissions community.

Thanks alot, made me a little more hopeful. Do you know any other reach school in NY with good pre-med programs?

Personally, I felt the only reason you were deferred instead of rejected was because they did not receive your second set of SATs in time. If the rest of your application was as strong as you made it out to be, Cornell probably deferred you expecting a big increase from your second set of SATs. Your second SATs barely improved and that will hurt you a lot.

Cornell is an ivy league school. There are thousands of applicants just like you. And they all have at least 1450+ SAT.

Take the SAT again ASAP, but it might be too late.

Wow everyone is being way too hard on NVMC! I totally understand where the OP is coming from. Math SAT is not just middle school math, it is under timed conditions which causes a lot of people stress and may not reflect accurately their ability so everyone needs to chill! Also I have seen a lot of people go from 1900’s to 2300’s from taking classes to learn strategies which is not reflective of their ability to “comprehend math.” People need to remember that these are real people behind the user names who are nervous, stressed out and putting their academic performance out on the line to be judged and scrutinized by others so show some compassion.

don’t let these guys get you down.
just try. its always worth a shot.

Alright, thanks for everybody giving their input. I know Cornell is a reach but honestly my SATs are the only thing not up to par. My essays were very good…literally weeks or revising and reflect very personal characteristics. I know that is not enough but overall except for the SATs I think my application is very strong. I sent in my first quarter average (99.5%) which was a large increase into my senior year. I read someplace that you can be deferred to see if those numbers don’t drop farther into your senior year. What do you guys think?

Its actually an 1920 super-scored.

@NVMCProgram: Now, I know a lot of people have said that you need to bring your SAT score up, and while this may be true, it is not the only option. I recommend you to try the ACT, another standardized test that colleges (including Cornell) accept in replacement of the SAT. It is a known fact that people can get 1800s or 1900s, even 1700s on the SAT and get a 32, 34 or 35 (out of 36) on the ACT. So maybe the ACT could be your better test. One of the main differences is that the ACT also contains a science section but seeing as you want to enter the medical field (I think), this shouldn’t be too much of a problem for you. So give it a shot, and if it doesn’t turn out so well, you don’t have to send in the score. Whatever you do, Good Luck!

I am seriously considering the ACT’s esp. because Science has always been my strong suit. I have a 100% in AP Biology (unweighted) right now and nobody in my class really competes. Honestly I wish i wasn’t first generation because I feel like if i had parents (or family in general) that has been through the ringer I would have been pressured to take the SAT’s more seriously. Our school is so small it doesn’t offer a prep course. I know its too late but i wish I would have spent more time on SAT tricks and stuff. I know I’m great at math, its just not normal math!

p.s. i cant take the ACT’S :frowning: The closest date is in April! They do not offer the next test (Feb 12th) in NY :(

First, I’m surprised you even DID get deferred. Your SAT is wayyyy too low for an Ivy League school, or for many top tier schools in general.

Second, the ACT Science isn’t based on your actual science ability but your ability to interpret data.

I’m sorry, but I will be shocked if you get an acceptance letter from Cornell in April.

haha well makes you think what the rest of my application is like. Guess it isnt all about the SAT’s.

I will probably have to take it again. Our school is known for it’s grades on Regents testing. So i dont know how much grade inflation it is.
