SAT II: 750 Math 2, 710 Physics
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): Dunno, probably around 3.7. A bit higher weighted.
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): Top 10% of 21 (very small school)
AP (place score in parenthesis): N/A
IB (place score in parenthesis): N/A
Senior Year Course Load: 10 courses, mostly Jewish stuff. Finished a lot of my STEM courses last year, hardest available in my country.

Job/Work Experience: None
Volunteer/Community service: ~100 hours in 9th/10th
Summer Activities: This past summer I visited colleges in the states, worked on a game. Again, not much.
Essays: CommonApp was ok, and I thought the supplement was pretty good. Wrote about adjusting to life in Israel and storytelling in game development.
Teacher Recommendation: One was stellar, the other was pretty short and non-specific.
Counselor Rec: Good. (Very small school, so he knows me well)
Additional Rec: Personal, but I thought it would make my app stand out.
Interview: N/A
Other

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
Intended Major: CS
State (if domestic applicant):
Country (if international applicant): Israel
School Type: Very small, religious
Ethnicity: Caucasian
Gender: M
Income Bracket: ~50k
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Under represented country?

Reflection

Strengths: SAT 1, maybe essays. I also made a game that revolves around music I wrote, which may have stood out.
What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: Game dev, multiculturalism
Weaknesses: EC’s, Sophomore grades, SAT 2’s
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Didn’t do much until my junior year, didn’t deserve to get in.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Nowhere, so far
Your “Big Red” factor - the most unique thing in your application: Nothing was amazing, unfortunately. I really liked their game design minor, which is why I applied early.

Congrats to everyone that got in, I’m sure you deserved it. I’d probably feel more bummed if I felt I should have gotten in, but I’ve been lazy. Good luck to those that were deferred.

Decision: Deferred

Essays:

Common App- Wrote about my personal connection to a piece of piano music that has carried me throughout my life… I would give it a 9/10 based on feedback I’ve gotten from teachers and peers.
Cornell supplement- I would say its a 7.5/10. Not my best, but hardly awful in my opinion.
Teacher Recommendation: 9/10 for one, 7/10 for anothe
Counselor Rec: 8/10
Additional Rec: none
Interview: Went really well, the interviewer seemed impressed with my stats and ECs and I basically taught her about the PAM major because it didn’t exist when she was at Cornell which was good because it showed my interest and how I had really done my research on HumEc and the major. It was pretty short though, only about 30 minutes. I wish I had focused some more on my ECs and achievements that I didn’t mention in the Common App.

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yeah but it’s a long shot lol

Reflection

I think my supplement essay got me in. Talked about business background. Then talked about my various interests and ec’s comparing them to those available at Cornell and how the AEM major was perfect for me due to my various interests and how it incorporates all of them.

Strengths: ACT score, supplement essay, service, research papers, recommendations
What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: Love for my state. Through research papers and common app essay. You got to have something ur passionate about.
Weaknesses: Grades. Generally one requires 40’s on 42 for an ivy and didnt have them but I had an upward graph and I think that helped.

Weaknesses: No APs, scattering of involvement across topics, no strong athletic pursuit after injury
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: My school is not one that the admissions committee is likely to recognize and does things in a strange fashion, so likely they wanted to consider me against more people.

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Boy Scouts (since 7th Grade, Junior Assistant Scoutmaster), Venture Crew (since 10th grade, Vice President of Communications), Mu Alpha Theta (since 11th grade, Vice President), Math Team (since 11th grade), JCL/Latin Club (since 10th grade), AP Academy (since 10th grade), NHS (since 10th grade), Beta Club (since 10th grade), Speedcubing (more of a personal hobby, but I still mentioned it as an “activity”…since 10th grade)

Job/Work Experience: I work at a Kennel (not the kind people adopt dogs/cats from, one that people board their pets at while they go on vacation, a good way to meet many derps and doges)…and yes, scooping poop DOES have a learning curve to it!!!

Volunteer/Community service: ~150 hours since 9th Grade

Summer Activities: since 11th-12th grade summer, the Kennel, otherwise, camping with Venture Crew/Boy Scouts, and cubing and astronomy on my own time, and a few other minor things

Essays:

Common App-Wrote about going to my first Cubing Competition (US Nats 2015) and the overall experience and how speedcubing is a great hobby I can use to escape the stress of my life, while still doing something “intellectually based”

Supplement-Wrote about my passion for astronomy, how I’m a pretty good astrophotographer (if I do say so myself, I’ve taken pics of Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn, with awesome detail), and how I would totally utilize the astronomy/astrophysics research opportunities at Cornell, all while worshiping the almighty Sagan

Teacher Recommendation: Waived FERPA Rights, however one from BC Calc teacher, one from Physics 1 & 2 teacher, and one from Latin 1/Latin 2/Latin 3/AP Latin-Vergil teacher (<-aka the coolest teacher in our school)

Counselor Rec: Waived FERPA Rights, however she had JUST been assigned as my guidance counselor after my counselor for 9th-11th had retired…I thought I was screwed, because I liked my last counselor a lot and knew her well, but it turns out my new counselor is super nice and supportive and obviously knows what she’s doing!!

Additional Rec: NOPE!!

Interview: NOPE!!!

Other-

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes

Gender: Male

Income Bracket: 80,000-100,000 I think, not quite sure

Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): NOPE!!!

Reflection-

Strengths: My geographic-demographic (SC), essays, see below (I kinda repeat myself a lot)
What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: One of the few astronomy majors, one of the few people from South Carolina, also because Charleston has been in national/world news, like, what, 2, 3 times this year??? Perhaps that made them notice my application more…?

Weaknesses: GPA, SAT 1, EC’s, Volunteer Hours, No research experience related to Astrophysics, White Male (unless affirmative action is not a thing, or as much of a thing as I see it)

Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I am an astronomy bum from South Carolina who also cubes, I guess that’s unique…

Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Accepted at the College of Charleston

Your “Big Red” factor - the most unique thing in your application: My supplement essay

Hello future applicants!!! I had no faith in this at all and did not expect to be accepted. Nonetheless, I can confirm that having essays that show EXTREME INTRINSIC PASSION for a specific thing (especially in your supplement essay, for me this was astronomy), and also explain why Cornell is the best place for you to expand this passion, YOUR CHANCES WILL INCREASE A TON!!! High School (and I would even say the last year or so of middle school) should be all about finding a subject that you’re passionate about, and expressing that passion through your 4 years.

Also, at the beginning of this thread, I mentioned some possible foreshadowing characteristics that could indicate your admission decision prior to the release of decisions…I can also confirm that these scenarios mean nothing; you will know of your decision when your decision is released (for us that was December 10th at 5pm).

Volunteer/Community service:

Summer Activities:
Swimming, working, coaching
Essays:
Personal essay: probably 9/10. About a convo I had this summer with an EMT and how it changed my perspective/helped me grow as a person/overcome my insecurities- kinda showed how a random encounter actually had a big impact on me. I think it was pretty powerful just because it was honest.

Supplemental: 8/10. Wrote about how growing up in a small elementary school & switching to a huge public middle school sparked my interests in human behavior, and also how I wanted to apply interests in human behavior and cultures to public health abroad in foreign countries.
Teacher Recommendation: Didn’t read, but both from favorite teachers.
Counselor Rec: Probably good, we had to submit brag sheets beforehand.
Additional Rec: Rec from swim coach who is also my boss in the summer (which came in handy)- was really good.
Interview: Lasted about an hour, we didn’t really talk about my academics as much as we just talked about college life in general. (greek life, parties, etc- we both weren’t super into the whole sorority thing and talked about that). I told her that I visited my friend at Cornell and sat in on 2 classes, which may have helped.

Other

Applied for Financial Aid?: no
Intended Major: Sociology
State (if domestic applicant): VA
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Public, 1800 kids
Ethnicity: white (but didn’t put down on common app)
Gender: female
Income Bracket: around $100,000
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.):
Legacy

Reflection

Strengths: Probably my essays. I’m good at writing and I was just honest in them. Someone beforehand suggested I apply to CALS because it’s supposedly easier, but I really was more interested in sociology and anthropology and I guess made it show in my supplemental. I also have a lot of sport ECs/work.
What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself:
Weaknesses: SAT IIs (I thought the 630 was going to be the end of me), and I don’t have a lot of community service other than NHS
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I was really surprised b/c I didn’t think I was super standoutish at all, esp. for an ivy league, but I think the legacy definitely helped. Before this year I wouldn’t even have thought of applying to Cornell, much less getting in, so I guess it just goes to show you shouldn’t doubt yourself by any means or let fear of not getting in keep you from applying!
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected:
Your “Big Red” factor - the most unique thing in your application: interests in human behavior

Decision: Deferred

SAT II: 660 Chemistry (took in 10th grade), 700 Biology Molecular, 730 Math II - all self studied

Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): National Merit Commended Student, Most Dedicated Musician Award from Juilliard Music Advancement Program, First Place in regional Poetry Contest, Recipient of Full Scholarship to French Woods Festival of the Performing Arts from Juilliard MAP, School Italian Award - I was always VERY upset over my lack of awards T_T

Volunteer/Community service: Relay for Life Member/Team Leader, St. Baldrick’s/Locks of Love volunteer
Summer Activities: Freshman year - won that scholarship to camp; Sophomore year - first year of Memorial Sloan (40 hrs+ per week, eight weeks LOL); Junior Year - second year at Memorial (40 hrs+ per week, eight weeks), worked at Kumon on Saturdays
Essays: At least an 8/10, honestly; they represented me and what led me to my dreams. Maybe they were too full of it or too focused on the same thing? It was about research, and then my supplement delved in on how I have so many other things I wish to do too, and how Cornell is all about doing it all so I can take it all on during my time there.
Teacher Recommendation: English Teacher - absolutely loves me, told me I should run for president (9/10, maybe 10/10); Research Teacher - likes me, probably bragged about me because he is good at that (7/10-8/10)
Counselor Rec: Really personable, knew a lot about me, maybe a little rushed? Not sure. (7/10-8/10)
Additional Rec: Didn’t get one, but you can sure as hell bet that I’ll be getting at least one now to send in.
Interview: Alumni, went well, took 20 minutes. I was probably accidentally awkward, because I have some anxiety issues. It was over the phone, so that’s always a lot less personal and a disadvantage.

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yessire
Intended Major: Biology!!!~~~ peace love genetics, am I right?
State (if domestic applicant): New York, concrete jungle where dreams are made OHHHHH THERE’S NOTHING YOU CAN’T DOOOOOO
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Public as heck
Ethnicity: White (Middle Eastern - Iranian)
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: 120k
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Dunno what they look for, honestly. Hence why I was deferred :stuck_out_tongue:

Reflection: It sucks a lot being deferred, especially because in the past four years, I’ve been working six days a week every week to get into college. My childhood sucked, and my family life is literally terrible. I want to finally see a bridge to my future, you know? I want to start getting to where I dream of being, and starting off my college journey with a defer honestly subconsciously makes me feel like I need to somehow do more, even though I’ve only been getting like five hours of sleep every night since freshman year to get where I want to be. I mean, I loved it all as I was doing it, but I am tired. I know in the end nothing will be the end of the world, but I just wish I could be at peace in this case because in almost everything I life, I end up being a bit…unlucky. But oh well, hopefully regular decision has nice things in store for me.

Strengths: Ridiculous research and music opportunities
What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: My absolute love of cancer genetics, and how my grandma’s death and terrible childhood coupled together strengthened me and set my goals at a young age.
Weaknesses: I couldn’t talk enough about what I did at the science programs - hopefully, my supplemental information that I send in will wow them. I didn’t have anyone to help me, as my parents went to college in Iran, so I took on Common App as well as I could.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I don’t do a sport - I mean, I taught swimming and took dance classes for years, but I didn’t do anything substantial enough to make room in my ten activities for that.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Will soon be waiting on - Caltech, Carnegie, Emory, Johns Hopkins, New York University, Stony Brook, UMich, Washington in St. Louis, Yale, and University of Wisconsin
Your “Big Red” factor - the most unique thing in your application: Apparently nothing enough to get me in LOL praiseeeee - so happy for all of you accepted, and for all you deferred, I feel you, and for all of you rejected, I am convinced that you would have killed it at Cornell too okay? We all have the ability, and just like all forms, there’s nothing that could completely capture your endless spirit in a snapshot. You may have gotten rejected/deferred from Cornell, but that doesn’t mean you are any less. Do not be shy to tell the people in your class that you have had a negative outcome - you probably deserved to be accepted too. If you have worked hard, try not to feel like you did something wrong. There are only so many spots, and things like this are a toss-up. Who knows? Maybe you got rejected from Cornell, but you’re going to get accepted into Yale.

Love you all

Weaknesses: no AP math or science courses, low math SAT score; a lot of people in my school applied ED to cornell this year.

Subjective:

Summer Activities: community service, CTY (6 years; it’s a well-known academic camp), economics course at a college (1 year, after I finished CTY), preparation for piano solo recital (I’ve had several)
Essays: Common App was good, it connected playing the piano with a scary situation I’ve been in; writing was good; I think I did a good job of showing “what makes me tick” ||||| Supplement was good, I stuffed it with Cornell-specific connections to my academic interests as much as I could
Teacher Recommendation: I think they were both pretty good since I had good relationships with them. In one teacher’s class I was pretty creative and wrote a strong paper. In the other, I showed my academic strengths.
Counselor Rec: probably good but vague
Additional Rec: N/A but I submitted a music supplement
Interview: It was over the phone because the alum who was supposed to interview me never contacted me so the person in charge did a spontaneous one with me over the phone on the last day before the admissions officers decided my fate. One of the questions was if I had anything else to add to my application before the final decision was made and I was able to talk extensively about my love for playing piano at the senior home. I didn’t think it went well at all since I was caught so off guard and I had finished my application weeks before it happened… I was actually really scared that this would lower any chances I had of getting in so I was bracing for a deferral but I guess it went better than expected!

Reflection

Strengths:
What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: my love for math and music
Weaknesses: test scores could’ve been better
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: academic rigor (I’m not a top student, but I’m still strong academically), strong extracurriculars (quality over quantity! my music supplement was really good), lots of specific reasons for wanting to go to Cornell; my essays were both kind of unique; really productive junior-senior summer; strong academic interest ever since I was little
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: I applied to other EAs but I haven’t gotten the results yet
Your “Big Red” factor - the most unique thing in your application: I actually thought I would get deferred! But I showed a strong interest in Cornell and SPECIFICALLY why I would fit in there. Also, I think my music supplement really made my application stand out since it was a difficult and well-known piece

What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: My ability to give back, my persistency through tough times, and my overall drive and strong spirit. Weaknesses: Probably spreading myself too thin. I feel like I have way too much breadth above all else. Also, test scores :frowning:
