i really had my heart set on going to Cornell Days, but b/c of financial constrait had to forgo it. is there anyone who would be willing to tell me what they did and what happened there? the brochure mentions some activites, but i'd like to get a firsthand perspective.

thanks a lot, and to those who went, i hope you had a really good time!!

I went to Diversity Hosting Weekend, which fell at the very end of Cornell Days. Cornell didn't hold your hand at all, prefrosh were left essentially to fend for themselves. I had fun though.

Thursday -
-Checked in, met my host. I was hosted at the Latino Living Center.
-Dinner with Arts&Sciences kids at Statler
-Free time - hung out with my host, checked out some prefrosh party they were having (it was really lame), ended up watching Wedding Crashers at the Multicultural Living Learning Unit (MCLLU sp?) This night sort of sucked socially, but like I said, no one held our hands

Friday -
-Breakfast with my college
-Class visits - I visited Psych 111, I think, Brain, Mind, and Behavior, or something. It was a very small class size and that was cool. I also tried to visit a CLASS course about the mysterious origins of English words but there was a test that day.
-Checked out the Cornell store
-Lunch at Oakenshields (sp?) in Willard Straight, which was very good but not spectacular.
-Tour of the Residence Halls, the low rises are reeaaally wack.
-Dinner at Appel, AMAZING.
-Fashion Show - Huge fashion show put on by a lot of students from the minority community on campus. It was pretty entertaining. I learned that many Cornell women are not pretty.
-"Gathering" with the search lights - there were these search lights on North, we followed them and lo and behold, it was a "gathering."
-Afterwards, some freshmen abducted us and took us to "chill." That was fun.

Saturday -
-Breakfast at Appel, OK, not a great selection
-Departure

The campus was nicer than I remembered and the weather became pretty gorgeous toward the end of my trip. The social life of the weekend sucked, but looking past that, all the other things about the school itself exceeded my expectations - the professors' demeanors, the campus, the facilities, the food, etc. The sucky social life was basically a result of the fact that we were prefrosh and we didn't know anyone, nor did we even know each other.

I was at the Diversity Housting Weekend, too. I have to agree w/ Bongoboy on everything b/c they didn't hold our hands at all (which is really awful if you don't know a single thing about the campus). Cornell women really aren't very pretty, but the professors and students do seem like really down-to-earth and friendly people. The people in charge of the program just did a poor job. If you need someone to hold your hand a little in college, then you really need to think about this school in depth.

I had the same problem during the MVP in October. My host really was bad, I only slept in her room and was left to find my own way. When the advisors asked us about our experiences, everyone was like our hosts are bad. the advisors said well we hope the program will be better next year when u guys host and can make the improvements. So they really didn't expect anyone to hold our hands, basically bc everyone was busy and had thier own work to do. But i think if ur going to host someone put some effort into doing what u signed up to do.

thanks for the responses! so, i take it that your guys' experiences were pretty positive, except for ahem certain aspects :)

do you think you'll be a cornellian next fall?

I definitely will. I applied ED and I love the school for all kinds of reasons. I have to say though, speaking objectively, if I had been undecided and had visited during Diversity Hosting Weekend, it would have hurt Cornell in my deliberations. The school did not put its best foot forward, in my opinion. I support and advocate for the school nonetheless because I know it was just the nature of the poorly organized weekend, but I feel sorry for kids who were seeing Cornell for the first and last time. They didn't get a good idea of what Cornell really is.

I was at that diversity hosting thing too. I was pretty happy that our hosts didn't hold our hands cuz i think i got a better feeling for what college would be like. Anyways, the pre-frosh party ("stepin out" i think) thing wasn't that bad...around 1 some of the black frats showed up so it got ok. Also there was a big fight with police and stuff at the fashion show after party, so that was pretty fun lol. They put me in a 4 hour!!! class on friday...it was pretty boring. Those were the only really memorable things. Also, the girls weren't hideous like many make em out to be. I was wondering what those lights were too. Whats the "gathering"?

tchaikovsky wrote a reflection thread titled Cornell Days: Reflections. It's really helpful!

The "gathering" is what you probably think it is but what I'm too paranoid to describe in explicit terms.
