Cornell ED Class of 2021 Discussion Thread

I was just looking through my email and I noticed that I got a letter from an alumni and it seemed like she was looking for an interview. Being that it’s the day before decision day, there’s not much I can do now.
Do you think that it was initially a good sign that I had someone reach out to me? Is it bad that I didn’t reply? Also, the alumni letter came from the Hotel college and I applied for ILR. Is this just because of availability?

So what are you guys doing to help with the torture of waiting? Like is there anyone here who is completely chill because they are confident they have a good chance? Cuz even though I have a sibling legacy (barely helps if at all), I am almost certain of a rejection or deferral, so I wanted to know if anyone here feels the same way, and if so how are you gonna deal with the disappointment? The thing that makes these days worse is we are doing absolutely nothing in school! So the only thing I can think about is Cornell.

Honestly it’s gonna be reallllly hard for me to get motivated again to keep my 2nd quarter grades up if I get rejected or deferred. Im EXHAUSTED with the college app process, and I just want some peace in my life for a little while. With everything I’ve been through, I honestly have no idea how I’m gonna deal with this devastating blow…

Sorry for the vent (got nothing better to do). If I get rejected or deferred, the only thing I would think about is how that one extra point on a test or graded assignment would get me an A for the year and boost my GPA, or if I landed that internship early on in high school, or if I spent a few more hours on my essay, or if I had raised my hand to impress a teacher one more time. I’m sure I’m not the only reject who will be asking the “what if?” questions, but if there is anyone here who has a way to cope with this disappointment and stay motivated to apply for other top schools, PLEASE share your thoughts. I know I could have a chance at other top schools, maybe a little lower than Cornell, but I would truly appreciate any input on the matter of getting rejected or deferred.

Also, would you rather get rejected and know right away, or get deferred and push through the rest of the year, knowing that there is a very small chance you will get in? I personally am sick of the application process and stress/anxiety, so I would rather know the final outcome now instead of waiting to get rejected later on lol.

Lastly, regardless of what happens, I wish everyone here the best of luck, even for the people only reading these threads. I truly hope all the people rejected can find a way to climb back to the top, and stay motivated about their interests and goals for the long run, even though I am not sure I will be able to do the same. Im sure a lot of you guys here will get in (some of these stats/extracurriculars are INSANE), but if you don’t just know that life moves on (some cheesy bs to finish it off lol).

Maybe this will help some people.

Say you don’t get Cornell and you’re upset. As an applicant to a top school who obviously expected to have a chance at acceptance, you’ll surely end up going to a good school at which you can learn and grow. 20 years from now, you’re your own definition of success. You’re happy, financially secure; the whole shebang. Will you still be upset that you didn’t get into Cornell?

Now, let’s say that you don’t get in and you’re upset. You go to a good school, and 20 years from now, you aren’t living out your dream. Will you blame your inability to achieve success on not getting accepted to Cornell? Do you really think that Cornell will make or break you? If you truly believe that you should have been accepted, that means you must be pretty smart, and you should be able to do well wherever you go. If you can’t, then maybe Cornell really shouldn’t have accepted you. Harsh, but true. That being said, I’m sure the vast majority of us will fall into the first category if we aren’t accepted. Will Cornell be a great experience if we attend? Most likely, yes. Will it help us to achieve whatever we set our minds to? Probably. Should attendance there make or break you? Definitely not.

Just my opinion, feel free to disagree.

does anyone know what the GPA hurdle is for the commitee to even consider your ECs and Essays?

@IBsleeping Cornell evaluates holistically; all parts of the application are looked at

@IBsleeping lol I doubt there is any GPA hurdle for Cornell. As long as your in a certain vague range, you are at least considered. Most of the people applying to Cornell will have this range (taking a wild guess but is 3.6< about right?). So I’m sure they look at everything and then make their final decision.

@cfnv101 does this mean that if my GPA is my only real weakness I can still fully redeem myself with essays and such? I knows its holistic but I am freaking out

@IBsleeping my sister got into Cornell despite having a lower GPA than me, but what set her apart were amazing recs, her passion for debate (relating really well to her school and major), and a good essay (haven’t looked at her essay but she said it helped her a lot). So yeah, I saw your other thread and your GPA isn’t too low, but hopefully you have made it really clear that you fit in really well to whatever your school is (lol unfortunately I can not say the same for my app). Also, do you have any hooks like a legacy? That could put you over the edge between a deferral and an acceptance I think.

Lol I wish this thread was more active, reading other people’s comments going through the same stress as me helps a lot lmao

Does anyone have financial aid which all currently still say 11/22 date? All day initiated but idoc says ordered. Not sure if this is a bad thing or because all of my documents were sent in late.

thanks @vcq7890 I just have this fear that Cornell emphasizes fit on their website but, in reality, they base everything off of numbers :frowning: I officially hit the point in waiting where I am just overthinking every single thing.

Hi @nycuser234 I too have the same message for the financial aid to do list. I submitted them over 12 days ago, and just today they were processed and updated on my IDOC portal. I’m assuming it will also take time to actually update and be processed by CORNELL, explaining the “initiated” and “ordered” messages.

0/10 prepared for the moment i see the deferral/rejection letter on the screen :-S

@applicantXxX Same here, lol. I am at least hoping for closure. I’m almost rather hoping for a definite outcome rather than a deferral at this point. Let’s hope for the best (:

How easy is it to tell the difference between rejected and deferred in the letter? I image accepted is easy because you’ll be congratulated early on, but what about those two??

@vcq7890 Fellow debater here. What school did your sister’s passion for debate draw her towards? Just curious.

btw officially 48 hours until we get the results !!!

Out of curiosity, is anyone here a part of a Mock Trial team?? @connorf13 Model UN? Debate club? Mock trial?

@connorf13 My sister the Capitol Debate and traveled the nation. This made her really passionate about policy (she got into Human Ecology), and although Im not a hundred percent sure how everything fit together in her app, I think she mentioned stuff about womens rights and other stuff. Im sorry I can’t really tell you the details cuz honestly I don’t even know.

Also, @luke28, I did Mock Trial but I didn’t put it on my app cuz there was no room and I wasn’t that devoted to it.

@vcq7980 I debate on the national circuit against many Capitol teams and am sure I share your sister’s passion.

@luke28 I am a public forum debater, and we look at it more as a team than a club. I have also done Model Arab League (which I find a little more interesting than model UN)

Is anyone here not super confident about their teacher recs?
