Rejected today.

Were you a “Guaranteed Transfer” (Transfer Option) student?: No
College applied to: ILR
Major: ILR

School attended before transferring: Terrible community college (barely anyone even transfers to the flagship State U, to put it that way.)
College GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0
Courses taken in college: honors curriculum; highest grade across all sections in 4 classes
Any grades below a B?: No
High school senior year grades (give GPA or just good/bad): Bad – like 2.5-ish

Extracurriculars: None; I work full-time and fix people’s cars for free. Won 2 national scholarships.
Essays, if any (rate them 1-10, details): 9?
Hooks (URM, first gen): First Generation College Student. Grew up in bottom 1% of household earners.

Why you think you were accepted/rejected: Two obvious reasons – my high school record was abysmal (I barely graduated), and my current college made me take horrible vocational-sounding classes (titled “Principles of Retailing,” “Customer Service,” and “Sales”) in order to graduate with a business degree.

Two other possible reasons: 1) Non-traditional student who already has FT job (I know they’ve taken some returning veterans as well as some older students who are going back to school. However, I currently have a FT industrial engineering job, so I’m not sure if they see that as a good fit). 2) I was super-honest and told them about my past. Was it risky? Probably. But given it involved drugs, I didn’t want to be like, blackmailed in 20 years or have someone anonymously email the admissions office should I be accepted and get kicked out. I did stress that I have been sober for nearly a decade now, but maybe it was just too risky for them. I don’t know.

Decision: Accepted

Were you a “Guaranteed Transfer” (Transfer Option) student?: Yes

Any grades below a B?: No

If you’re a GT/TO, did you meet all of the requirements? (ex. full time student, GPA, and course requirements): Yep!

Extracurriculars: Pre-Vet Club (Events Committee), volunteering at local animal shelter
Essays, if any (rate them 1-10, details): N/A
Hooks (URM, first gen): None

Why you think you were accepted/rejected: I was able to meet all of the requirements for the transfer option (GPA, class requirements, credit requirements, etc.). It was definitely hard work, but possible!

@stressedTM congratulations!!!

Decision: Accepted

Were you a “Guaranteed Transfer” (Transfer Option) student?: Yes
College applied to (ex. CALS, CAS): CALS
Major: Biology

School attended before transferring: Local CC
College GPA (out of 4.0): ~3.9
Courses taken in college: Bio 1 and 2, Chem 1 and 2, Calc 1 and stats
Any grades below a B?: No
High school senior year grades (give GPA or just good/bad): I actually got one C and a couple B’s but otherwise all A’s
If you’re a GT/TO, did you meet all of the requirements? (ex. full time student, GPA, and course requirements): Yes

Extracurriculars:
Essays, if any (rate them 1-10, details): None
Hooks (URM, first gen): None
Any other comments about your application: No

Why you think you were accepted/rejected: I was a TO

Decision: Accepted

Were you a “Guaranteed Transfer” (Transfer Option) student?: Yes
College applied to (ex. CALS, CAS): Human Ecology
Major: Design & Environmental Analysis

School attended before transferring: Bennington College
College GPA (out of 4.0): 3.85
Courses taken in college: About 60 credits worth of psychology and arts classes (mostly music - I want to go into acoustic design)
Any grades below a B?: Yes, one C+ in a statistics class because I missed and was not allowed to make up the final, and one Withdraw due to a scheduling conflict.
High school senior year grades (give GPA or just good/bad): 4.33 weighted, forget the unweighted but pretty good. All As/A-s my senior year. Definitely my best grades of high school but was overall solid throughout all 4 years.
If you’re a GT/TO, did you meet all of the requirements? (ex. full time student, GPA, and course requirements): Yes - though one of my course requirements (lab science) is still in progress this semester, so my enrollment is technically contingent on successfully completing that class. Not worried about that though!

Extracurriculars: not many in college, but I was involved in a lot of music ensembles that entailed a ton of performances. In high school, I held leadership positions in marching band, a few clubs, etc. Also completed a research internship at NYU this winter.
Essays, if any (rate them 1-10, details): I honestly think my transfer essay was one of the best I’ve ever written - which is saying a lot, since I’m not super confident in my writing. I talked about how I had a quarter-life crisis and went on a spontaneous trip by myself and how that helped solidify my future goals.
Hooks (URM, first gen): Low income (?)
Any other comments about your application: I was in constant contact with someone from the HumEc dean’s office the entire time, and they were always very responsive and helpful!

@ruby21 Omg spontaneous trip. I would love to be your friend LOL Anyways, thank you for posting and congrats again!!

@Boroboro haha happy to be friends! Feel free to message me anytime if you have any questions or if you want to freak out about decisions coming, lol. And thank you!

@transferz late reply, but thank you!!!

Any grades below a B?: Yes
High school senior year grades (give GPA or just good/bad):3.4

Essays, if any (rate them 1-10, details): 8
Hooks (URM, first gen): First Gen
Any other comments about your application: Didn’t really tool it seriously as I should have

Why you think you were accepted/rejected: I applied to one of the Cornell’s most competetive program with crappy grades.

@“FutureIbanker/hfmanager” Are you sure that Cornell Hotel is one of Cornell’s most competitive programs?
I applied to hotel as well but I thought it was generally regarded as one of the “easier” schools to transfer into (they told me 33% acceptance rate).

@ObLiViOuSx99 Pretty sure you’re correct. I believe its less competitive but you need to be a really good fit so it is difficult in that regard.

@ObLiViOuSx99 33 percent is 7 rejections out of ten. Still tough

Rejected by CALS - Plant Science (with a concentration in Plant and Human Health (Phytotherapy))

School attended before transferring: Community College
College GPA (out of 4.0): 3.9
Any grades below a B?: No
High school senior year grades (give GPA or just good/bad): 3.6
Courses for the Transfer Requirement: all completed

Extracurriculars:
Essays, if any (rate them 1-10, details): Personally, its a 10 but I guess not LOL (wrote about how my grandpa owns a botanical garden in Thailand and I grew up falling in love with plants. My grandmother gave me her homemade dried flower book that included poem verses of the traditional Thai medicine corpus. Also wrote about how I discovered a dream to integrate herbal medicine and conventional medicine to find new health solutions and how Cornell can help me achieve the goal (also how I want to later pursue an MD degree at Weil Cornell Medical School). I mentioned my current research project on the anti-cancer properties of a bioactive compound in ginger (in vitro) and how I will be presenting the project at my school STEM expo (public event) and at a joint meeting of two plants-related organizations in Wisconsin. I also mentioned 3 Cornell plant science faculty members I have been in contact with for half a year and 1 plant science alumnus.

Hooks (URM, first gen): first gen

Letter of Rec: 3, one of my current prof who was a part of a drug discovery (very close since I volunteer in his lab and helped led the classes during lectures), one from my high school teacher (very close to her. She knew a part of me that is kind of unique, like how I can play leaf flute, do traditional Thai fruit carving, and make Thai flower garlands etc, and one from the plant science alumnus who had the same concentration as me (phytotherapy)).

Any other comments about your application: On the “additional info” section I elaborated the activities I organized as an “activity coordinator” at my previous dental school (where I attended in prior to the community college). I organized many activities which united over 2000 students together and wrote down how the results significantly affect the students (medical students were helping dental students with gross-anatomy, more group studies were observed, etc).

Why you think you were accepted/rejected: I really had high hope so I don’t know what went wrong. But maybe the fact that I still can’t see my mistakes show that I am lacking some self-evaluation skill LOL.

General Comments: I really did try my best for Cornell. Reached out to their professors and alumni and still am in contact with them. I will keep these connections for the future as they are lovely people. I do not regret anything and am not upset because I do believe in Cornell admissions. They probably had their reasons.

I will be committing to Wellesley College where I can attend half of my classes at MIT! Really excited since they also have a Botanics garden on their campus! Best wishes for all the others who are still waiting for their decision! <3

It seems like community college applicants (especially older/nontraditional ones, or “second chance” applicants with poor high school records) were almost universally rejected from Cornell this year. The only acceptances I’ve seen have been from four year schools, GTs, or community college applicants who already had perfect high school stats to begin with but chose to go to community college first.

Bummer. I had heard of Cornell’s rep over the years as a school that gave students second chances.

Rejected

@grahamcracker123 hahaha I don’t think we got rejected by the fact that we are from community colleges! My community college is awesome. I think our applications just did not match what Cornell is looking for this year

Accepted, CALS - V&E - nontraditional student

Any other CAS applicants who hasn’t heard back?

@ruby21 what do you mean when you say you were in constant contact with an advisor from humec?? like, you gave them weekly updates, or just asked occasional questions? i spoke on the phone with paul fisher once, and have emailed humec, but not a person specifically…
