Greetings College Confidential! I'm an Early Decision Applicant to the Cornell ILR School. I was curious about interviews. I was under the impression that Cornell did not offer interviews to non Hotel Administration applicants. What does it mean if you are offered one?

** Also what kinds of questions do they ask? ^_^ Thanks!

My “interview” is tomorrow. And it’s not an interview, it’s a meeting with an alumni. It’s more casual than a formal interview. And I think it’s just so Cornell can get to know you on a more personal level. If you are contacted for said “interview” then that means there is an available alumni in your area who is willing to do these meetings. These meetings can only help your application, unless you totally screw up on it.

Oh, I see, I see. But if they are not real interviews but only “interviews” why did they say that I had to meet before Nov. 29? I am probably over-analyzing and possibly rationalizing.

The alumni interviewer have to fill out this report that comments on how the meeting went and the impression of the candidate and send that to the admissions office. They have to have the meeting before that date because decision notification will arrive shortly thereafter. There is no point in having that meeting AFTER they tell you whether you are in or not.

I think it does to some degree. Obviously if you do give a bad impression, that will negatively affect your application. But if you do well, it can only help. But I think that the meeting/interview isn’t supposed to count towards the admissions process… or at least that’s what Cornell says.

The IMFORMATION SESSION is meant to help you convey to Cornell any additional information that might not be on your application and give you a chance to ask questions you might have…and to give the Alum a feeling of bonding with the University.

Applying ED, you have already shown a binding commitment. That’s good!

RD candidates should also relax and be themselves - just do not do as one candidate did last year and say, “I’m applying to Cornell because I was rejected at Ivy X Early and I heard Cornell was much easier to get into.”

How is it decided which students are contacted for an interview? Is it based on availability of alumni per geographic region? My daughter had her application submitted on 10/27 & hasn’t heard anything regarding an alumni interview?? We live approximately 1 hour from Cornell.

In most areas of the country, esp. the Northeast, there is a volunteer alum who is the “chair”, who after he/she gets the referrals from Cornell (which may take a whiile) then assigns the student to an alum volenteer. That alum may either call or e-mail - I usually e-mail first so as not to catch the kid off-guard. So students do not respond. Check your e-mail, kids! Check your spam box too!

Please remember that the alum is a volunteer who is trying to fit the meeting into his./her schedule and respond promptly when they ask if you wold like to get together.

If you are not contacted, it is NOT a reflection on your application. Neither of my own kids was contacted.

If you are contacted, it is NOT a reflection on your application. It does not mean you have pasted a hurdle.

To csdad: I was contacted by email (as memphismom said). I’m sure your daughter will get an email from an alumnus very soon - my alumni ambassador said November 29th was the latest possible date I could meet him before he had to report to the college.
