EDIT from CollegeMom...I am going to edit out links to articles that have this student's name in them, as well as references in posts to his name. If discussing the case, and since this student participated in the CC community as Lucifer, I request that posters use Lucifer in the posts and not his real name if you should know it. Published news reports exist if you need to read more. Thank you. Hopefully other students will benefit from the tragedy of this promising young man who died too soon.

Absolutely devastating........:(

This is exactly why the programs that are pursuing awareness of the symptoms of alcohol poisoning are so important. This is borrowed from the same Gordie Foundation website I posted on a different thread:

Symptoms of Alcohol Poisoning

If you have any of the following symptoms, you are experiencing an overdose reaction:
Vomiting
Passed out
Difficult to awaken
Slow, shallow breathing

What You Should Do

Don't let a person who has been drinking heavily "sleep it off." If they persist in falling asleep, wake them up. If they don't respond, it's time to call the police emergency number (911) and tell them you need an ambulance for a possible alcohol overdose. Do not assume your friend will simply sleep it off. When in doubt, call for help. Don't take a chance with your friend's life. If you know or suspect that other drugs may have been taken, be sure to notify at least one or more ambulance personnel. Alcohol in combination with other drugs accounts for about 30% of all drug overdose deaths.

More programs are in development:

Terrible. My husband is a Sig Ep...this fraternity has really set a good example by taking a strong stand against hazing and excessive drinking as well as promoting their Balance Man and Balanced Leader programs. Such a tragedy.

Are you suggesting that the Sig Ep program doesn't work?

According to Sig Ep he had his own flask--they did not serve him.

EDIT by CollegeMom: took out the link to the article from which this statement comes. There is an article in UVA's daily.

Probably no one noticed this in the news because it's not a big name school:

Pittsford man dies while at college

(name of student) found dead after drinking, falling down stairs, police say

Gary McLendon
Staff writer

(March 13, 2006) A Clarkson University student from Pittsford was found dead Saturday morning at his fraternity house in Potsdam, St. Lawrence County.

(name of student), 23, of (address), a graduate of Pittsford Mendon High School, fell down a flight of stairs and died when his air supply was cut off, according to police.

"He was found at the bottom of a staircase. The way his body was discovered and the position it was in, it appears accidental," Potsdam village police Lt. Ed Tischler said Sunday...

...(student's name) died in the Tau Delta Kappa fraternity house off campus.

barrons, I don't know if I believe the flask part...is it possible to put enough alcohol in a flask to even black out? I mean, even if you're packin' everclear, it'd be pretty tough. Also, I'm assuming that since it was at a frat, they probably just had a keg of light beer or something along those lines. It's pretty hard to get alcohol poisoning from drinking beer, at least from what I've seen...

(name of Cornell student) was a poster on CC

I am also a bit skeptical--but there's always the pre-function drinking and then a refill to go with to the party. Most people I knew do a fair bit of pre-func before hitting the parties.

Wow, I remember that name.

I can't beleive the pre loading that goes on
I just went to the Showbox last week and noticed people getting turned away because they were drunk even before it started- it was about 7pm
Then once I was in there- I noticed some who had really gone overboard- and this was an event that attracted "adults" most were in their late 20's all the way up to their 60s. I am just grateful nobody puked as far as I could see, although at the end there was someone behind me who was lighting a pipe  yes we did ban public smoking.

but you know, I have never known anyone who died because they smoked too much pot

Em:

Others have died because someone smoked too much weed so you may want to re-think that statement.

Oh come on, now, tsdad - those links don't prove a thing about marijuana. I don't smoke pot, but I don't buy any of the anti-marijuana propaganda that's out there. I do drink and I do recognize that, at high BACs, alcohol can be very toxic, but I've never seen anything to indicate that marijuana is particularly poisonous to the body.

This is what Lucifer posted to the Parents Cafe on January 11th:

"Take your talk of "haze" elsewhere - I enjoy drinking, but I certainly don't go through life in a haze. I'm on track to either double or triple major plus get an MEng in 8 semesters, I run marathons for fun, and generally live life to its fullest. I do not drink myself into a stupor and waste days, months and years. Drinking is a recreational activity that I very much enjoy, but I keep it in its place - drinking only with friends and only when it won't interfere with my other goals (I'm not Bode Miller, I don't drink before marathons or prelims). Alcohol hasn't limited me in any way, nor has it ever prevented me from achieving success. I'm sorry that alcohol has caused you such problems, binx, but I'm not telling you to drink. I'm just counteracting the anti-alcohol posts that everyone else seems to have and saying that it is possible for alcohol to be a positive, enjoyable thing. That, and also showing that liability wise that drunk driving (or other dangerous activity after drinking, like drunk jetskiing) is by far the biggest problem because it is far easier and far more likely that someone will drink and drive and kill themselves/someone else than it is they will drink enough to stop breathing.

There are plenty of teens who are capable and competent enough to handle themselves and don't need much, if any, supervision; the amount of supervision necesscary depends on the kid.

which is a problem in situations of high Blood Alcohol.............

oh my god. (Sorry, I'm speechless...that poor kid and that poor family).

I was speaking of pot used by itself- not in combination with alcohol.

I don't think pot could be the only factor in the case of a parent who is so negligent/abusive that they would cause the death or injury to their child. Those cases show that other drugs were being used along with marijuana-
*Addy smoked marijuana, ingested cocaine and took pain pills this past Tuesday while trying to care for her son.

"When you ingest cocaine and marijuana and a painkiller and then you put the baby in bed with you and you go to sleep, then you're not responsive to deal with the baby in a responsible manner," says Lexington Sheriff James Metts.*
Show me some stats that indicate pot was the only drug used in the death of college age or older adults

When I used to smoke pot- that was the only drug I used, same with my friends- drinking alcohol along with it, totally distorts the effects of the pot.
The kind of people who are just stuffing whatever substances they can into their body to lose control are morons, and their behavior can't be blamed on marijuana

From a University of Texas website, http://www.cc.utexas.edu/student/vpsa/security/drugfree/risks.html :

Marijuana (Cannabis): Marijuana is usually ingested by smoking. Smoking marijuana causes disconnected ideas, alteration of depth perception and sense of time, impaired judgment and impaired coordination.

And then with your disconneted ideas, alteration of depth perception and sense of time, impaired judgement, and impared coordination you get in a car...

EDIT from CollegeMom: leaving out references and links to student's name for privacy. He participated here as Lucifer and so that is how we'll refer to him on the forum. Thank you.
