Cornell to NYC

From what I have heard, Cornell in general is isolated and not very accessible, which my main concern about the school. Is it relatively easy to get from Ithaca to NYC and do students often (or ever) go off campus?

there's several buses that run daily from Cornell to NYC. I know of some people who have gone to NYC 2-3 times per semester (I've done it several times myself though I was always busy on weekends).

Don't listen to every rumor you hear.

I hear it takes about four or five hours, which is not that bad.

Being from NYC, I can tell you that its relatively easy to get from Cornell to NYC, but I cant tell you how often students do the trip because I am not a student.

shortline/coach usa buses go directly to the campus. I believe Greyhound buses go to bus terminal in Ithaca. so shortline is more convenient to use.

^ Agreed. According to the shortline schedule, one of the stops is North Campus which is where most freshman live.

Keep in mind that while Ithaca is somewhat "centrally located," the Cornell campus is not isolated. Ithaca is a lot more interesting than people (generally those who haven't been here) make it out to be. Don't worry too much about being able to get away from campus. It can be done easily, but Cornell isn't one of those places where everyone leaves on the weekends and campus is deserted - on the contrary, this is where all the fun is!

I agree with faircornell. People make Ithaca sound like this place that's always covered in grey snow and in the middle of the Northwest territories.

Ithaca's one of the most interesting and beautiful smaller cities in the country - massive waterfalls in town, funky eclectic culture downtown, a very active campus life. Don't buy the hype from snooty Coasties who think they live in or come from the epicenter of civilization and naively pity all others (way too many end up at Cornell).

If you can find the funk that makes Ithaca unique and not begin every sentence with, "Man, in New York we used to..." you'll find the whole place has quite a magical effect on you when you think back on it from your Manhattan office or wherever.

By East Coast standards, it is somewhat isolated. But we did day trips to Syracuse (about 45 minutes), and weekend trips to Niagara, New York City, and Maine.

how much does shortline cost? thanks =] any student discounts?
