Cornell University - Spring 2018 Transfer - Discussion Thread

I have still not heard anything back. I tried the forgot login trick and it did not work. Is this a good sign?

@edcam I dont know:((( But same here

are CAS results coming out today? or is it just every tuesday?

I called the CALS office a few minutes ago and they said to check email every Tuesday. Also, I was told the email might have gone to your spam box or non-primary box.

Just called CAS and they said emails will start to be sent out every “tuesday” starting the 21st of next week. Good to all of you.

is it too late to get chanced in this thread? lol

@casplsthanku not at all, but you will have to chance me too haha!

@edcam ok les go!!

  1. Major: CS, math
  2. Standing: Sophomore
  3. GPA:
  • College:
  • 1st sem: 3.2, 2nd sem: 3.4
  • I transferred from the private college where I spent these two semesters because the environment there was not socioeconomically diverse and didn’t really equip me, a first gen student, with the resources to succeed there.
  • Currently in my 3rd semester at a public state school and probably getting a 4.0 (midterm grades were all A’s)
  • High school: 92/100 unweighted, idk what that is on a 4.0 scale but we didn’t do those at my high school. Went to a really good public high school, but I def wasn’t the top student there, prob top 20%.
  1. ECs, from most recent to least:
    Currently:
  • CS club; we do ICPC (cs competition) problems and hackathons
  • math club; we do fun math problems
    Summer:
  • Worked at a tech startup involving machine learning
  • Worked at an education nonprofit; programmed stuff to analyze services offered to first-gen/low-income students
    Freshman year I was involved in:
  • Led and conducted informal statistics research w/ 100+ participants & yielded conclusive results
  • Statistics club: Tutored peers in math classes
    HS:
  • Taught ESL learners english + reading comprehension for statewide exams
  • EBoard of Key Club
  1. Essays + recs:
  • Common app essay was ok, it wasn’t very narrative-y like hs senior app essays, so idk how to judge that one
  • Supplemental was a solid essay
  • Recs: 2 were eh, I didn’t know my profs at my current institution v well, 1 was very strong, from my old institution from a polisci TA who talked about my interests in stats, cs, and doing social good

oh and if it’s not obvious, i’m applying for CAS - CS

@casplsthanku you’re EC look solid. I can’t argue with that. Your GPA in college is solid also. I bet they will look at that. Your HS GPA won’t matter as much because you have been attending college for more than 2 semesters which is a year worth of school. What may bring you down a little bit is your essay and rec… they look at those more than they look at your stats for sure. I say you have a decent.

@casplsthanku
I applied to CAS - Government
Stats:
HS - 3.55 GPA
Worked a full - time job through HS. I also became a manager while im HS.
Ranked: 42/114
I am currently attending a CC in NYS.
GPA - 3.77 - Criminal Justice
(3.5 first semester, 4.0 second semester, likely a 4.0 current semester)
Working 2 jobs while at college (full-time student, full time Job).
I had the sheriff of my county, the Deans of my College and an English professor write my recommendation letters.
My essay talked about how I came from the bottom of the latter. How I Came from Puerto Rico not knowing any English and worked my way up the latter (moved within 8 different states and 8 different schools) I mentioned how I became a manager while in HS. I also mentioned we lived in a car for a while.
Mid-Term report (A,A,A,A,A,B)

What do you think my chances are?

@edcam I think your app speaks well of your character; your essays, grades, and ECs seem to reflect that you are hardworking. However, my concern would be whether or not you “fit” with Cornell. As long as you managed to convey that too, I think you have a great shot at admissions.

also, i feel like me and @edcam would both appreciate more input on our chances from other people in the thread! feel free to put my app thru the blender lmao

does anyone know when the first wave of online decisions for ilr will be released? maybe on the 21st? also, when do financial aid packages arrive once official acceptance letters are released online?

Hey @genieforuboi the 21st is my guess too. Although I’m hoping Ian will be making phone calls possibly beginning from later this week. Looking at your thread history, didn’t you get accepted last semester?

I spoke to admissions, CAS decisions will come out any time until the 21st of November. good luck everyone!!

@CTProsp118 It’s interesting how on top of it CAS is this year, I guess ILR is going to be the one lagging behind this year

@ILRSLUG ya, maybe because more people applied to CAS?..

@CTProsp118 I feel like less applicants usually means a faster response, although I would guess that CAS has a larger admission staff than ILR, that could be playing a huge role in all of this.

@ILRSLUG fair
