EPGY or COSMOS?

Sent from my ThunderBolt using CC

Idk which one is considered better, I am honestly more interested in the specific cluster offered at COSMOS

Sent from my ThunderBolt using CC

I would say if you’re more focused on science, do COSMOS. The EPGY program seems more focused towards the humanities when looking solely at the classes offered.

Also, EPGY is for 2 weeks, right? And it’s like $6000+? COSMOS is twice as long but at half the price ($2810). :D

I am a sophomore from San Diego, and I was accepted to Cluster 4 at UCI.
Anyone else??

UCI Biomed. Anyone else?

I’m a junior and I got accepted into UCSD’s Earthquakes Cluster, Cluster 4, but I am not sure if I should take it… I want to major in Electrical Engineering, which isn’t really related to Earthquakes.

I really want to get into a UC college like Davis or San Diego or Santa Barbara, but my Extra Curriculars are pretty poor…what do you guys think? Will attending the Earthquakes Cluster this summer make it easier for me to get into those colleges???

@rr0066

Besides it not being related, why would you not want to take it? Do you have anything to lose? I think it would be very beneficial especially since you say that your extracurriculars are poor. COSMOS would definitely enhance your college applications!

I personally would love to take it, but it’s just that it costs around $3,000, and I live 10 hours away from the campus, which adds even more money…
My parents aren’t very eager to provide for it. Can’t blame them

But my parents also said that I should take it if it will SIGNIFICANTLY help me get into those UCs that I would like to go to (UCSD, UCSB, UCD)
So yeah…will a month of learning about Earthquakes at COSMOS truly make the difference for me between getting into the Electrical Engineering major in those colleges and not getting in??

Here are my other stats, if it helps put my situation into perspective: My weighted GPA is around 4.3, and I’m hoping to get 2100+ on the SAT when I retake it again soon. I have an officer position of Events Manager for Neuroscience Club, I was in Debate in Freshman Year and now doing Speech in Junior Year but didn’t do neither Speech nor Debate during Sophomore Year, I’m in French Honor Society, I qualified as 10th in the nation for a National French Test this year, and for the past two years, I’ve volunteered at a mosque and a library. Oh and I’m also in some clubs at school.

So, yeah, will learning about Earthquakes at COSMOS truly help me get into UCSD/UCSB/UCD for electrical engineering verses not getting into them?

@missiris I’m sorry, but you seem to be misinformed. The EPGY programs costing $6k are for 6 weeks, not 2. I attended the “Investigations in Bioscience and Biotechnology” program last year, and enjoyed it very much. Though of course it’s not an internship where the student actually conducts original research under the guidance of a mentor, it is still very much educational. I would say that I acquired much of my current lab experience from EPGY. The fact that humanities are offered has no impact on what each individual program does.

That being said, I have not been to COSMOS and so cannot compare to two, but cosmos appears more competitive, as well as being less expensive, so if you’re interested in all that, cosmos is probably the better choice.

@gmarch89 Did they shorten the sessions this year then? I was going to apply for EPGY but none of the classes were appealing.

Just checked, these are the session dates for this summer.
Session 1: June 24 - July 13
Session 2: July 16 - August 4
Session 2E: July 16 - August 11

3 weeks long! Maybe we are referring to different programs…? I don’t know what happened LOL :D

@breezy96 - My son is UCI - cluster 4.
Try facebook ‘COSMOS UCI 2012’ and let me know if you have a problem joining the group.
It is an open group.

My son is a junior living in Irvine.
He has to get in shape for the hikes :)

Anybody else UCI Cosmos ?

Rejected by UCD Biomed.

Stats:
Freshman
GPA: 4.0 UW, school doesnt weight
EC: 10 years of piano
Chess top 50 in US age group
8 on the AIME, missed USAJMO because problem 1 on AMC 10 XD
Physics Olympiad semifinalist.

I also thought my essays were strong - I had my English teacher look over them and she liked them. Anyone see a hole in my application?

@wilson97 What were your ECs? What were your essay topics?

Also, you did apply to the most competitive cluster in the whole COSMOS program… Biomed usually gets over 300 apps and only accepts about 40.

I feel like such an under achiever after reading other peoples post. My friends say I am an over achieve ,but now I don’t feel like one. I got accepted to UC Santa Cruz. I have been assigned to Cluster 7 - Astronomy and Oceanography - Deep Explorations of Outer and Inner Space. I received a scholarship for 3/4 of it. I am only going to pay $700. My un-weighted GPA is 3.74 and weighted is 3.84, but I have over 200 hours of community service and I tutor mathematics. I feel under qualified. Also I live far away from Santa Cruz.

@Muddkip haha same. underachiever feeling though my friends say the opposite.
but hey, i got accepted. (UCD Cluster 9: Mathematical modeling of biological systems) it was my second choice (first-biomedical…).
i’m so confused about the requirements of how they accepted people because no one else from my school got accepted (about 6 of us-small school-and they were definitely all amazing students)

anyone else get accepted to my cluster? haha it seems not so popular, i heard it’s a new cluster this year so we’ll see how it goes :)

I just got my U-lock for my bike. I’m so excited for COSMOS UCD!!! :D

How is geometry an honors class

So guys, EPGY for biotech or COSMOS for tissue engineering/ regenerative medicine? I am leaning towards COSMOS but I need some more convincing

@ Raandomness Congratulation! Hope you have fun.I hate feeling like an under achiever I feel like I can do more, but we got accepted so our applications must be awesome.

Never mind, I forgot that I already asked this here. I’ll shut up and go to COSMOS :)
