Admitted to UCSD Computer Science, 1st choice.

My daughter. Not me. LOL

Admitted to UCD Biomed as freshman
heres my stats

Freshman, accepted to UC Davis Biomed
I have a 4.0 GPA
I take honors english, honors geometry, honors global studies, and biology.
In Health and Bioscience Academy and SIMS club (Students Interested in Medical Sciences) at school
Part of the California Scholarship Federation
Letters of rec from my 9th grade bio teacher and 8th grade physical science teacher
I cofounded an organization called Just Dig It thats raised $25,000 for freshwater wells in Ghana, West Africa
My essays talked about my mission trip to Ghana, where I saw firsthand how wells and the science behind them change the lives of thousands of people. I also tied it into infectious diseases by using some stats on common water-borne diseases. I had my honors freshman english teacher look over them. When writing your essays, I strongly suggest you make them personal and unique. I think it also helped that I had some statistics in my essay, it showed that I did some research and truly care about what I was writing.

I was accepted to Cluster 8, Chemistry of Life at UCD! :D

Sophomore
UW GPA: 4.0, Weighted GPA: 4.1
Weighted classes: Chemistry H, Pre-Calculus H
Extracurriculars mentioned: Science Club; Band (clarinet): Second chair and co-section leader in high school, 2nd chair county honor band, middle school section leader; National Honor Society (treasurer of JNHS); Academic Decathlon: high scores on math/science exams and gold medal in highest division for essay comp; SciOly (several medals at regional competitions)

I assume I got pretty good recommendations from my Pre-Cal and Chem teachers.
My essays were all right. (Nothing compared to pbericcc’s I’m sure haha) I talked about how I had always avoided chemistry because of my parents (who are both chemists) and I wanted to become independent. However, it became my passion through Science Olympiad and I realized that I inherited my parents’ love of chemistry. I also talked about how, in school, I am surrounded by students that strongly dislike chemistry and the COSMOS environment would foster my love of the subject and nurture my passion to its fullest extent.
Although I didn’t have as much of an impressive background as pbericcc, I probably conveyed a lot of personality through my essays, which is probably the best thing a future applicant can do in the essays, the sole most significant portion of the application. Best of luck applying! :D

Not accepted. And I’m a little bit shocked
Here’s what I had:
Sophomore with a 4.33 GPA
Speech and debate president, academic league captain 2 years in a row, John Hopkins talent search AND grand award recipient, member of an exclusive girls science organization that is county based, and (the biggest seller I thought) the self-organizer of a 250 girl conference for empowerment.
I’ve always had a way with a pen, my essays actually made my chem teacher cry (and my mom XD not that that counts haha) and I put in a lot of effort.
I’m not sure what they were looking for, but evidently I wasn’t it. :

Oh, almost forgot, my essays talked about me realizing freshman year that I could make a difference using science, I mentioned a few family related things that furthered my desire to explore science, particularly neurology. I also wrote about how addictive the world of science and engineering is.

bummer, not accepted to biophysics @ ucd.

freshman

gpa 4.0 (they don’t weight), honors geometry (which is only honors class available)

Weighted classes: English, Alg II, Bio, Ancient Civ
EC’s: 10 years of piano, 3 years of library volunteering, Mock Trial, American Cancer Society, Freshman Class Council (leadership)
My essays were alright, pretty strong but not AMAZING like some of your guys’ sound! In my main essay, I wrote about how I never pictured myself away from science and how much I’d love to go to COSMOS to meet other people to share the same passion as me. My “cluster specific” essay focused on my experience with friends/family with cancer (for Tissue & Tumor Biology).

I was sad about it at first, but I think I’ll just take it as a good experience and try again next year! Congratulations to everyone who was accepted!

Accepted into cluster 8: The Chemistry of Life

Accepted into cluster 8: The Chemistry of Life

NJROTC (yeah, it’s a long story.)
Speech and Debate (Lincoln-Douglass and Parli, no awards mentioned though)
Piano (9 years, both lessons and self-taught)

Essays:
My essay for the specific cluster honestly wasn’t that great. It was pretty overgeneralized and clich

@Ladyengineer2012, very nice to know there is somebody else with my son.
I am sure they will be become friends, he is very sociable. He is at 11th grade now.

There is a facebook group created ‘Cosmos UCI 2012’. Maybe we can talk there.

We live near UCI, and son attended ‘UCI Premed summer camp for high school’ last summer - commuter program then, so this summer he is excited to be staying at the dorms.

The hiking will be fun and hope to put him in shape.
He is very excited to do hands on science. :)

SueNew - I can’t find the Facebook COSMOS UCI 2012 page.

Ladyengineer2012,
Here is facebook link for ‘COSMOS UCI 2012’ group.
It is created by one the students who are attending camp.
Redirecting...;
hope this works.

I don’t have a facebook right now, but I’ll probably have to get one to keep in touch with my COSMOS friends after the program! haha

@SueNew I think the link you posted is the Facebook of the student who made the group, not the actual group itself. :/

Does anyone want a UCD FB group? :]
