Could I get into Purdue?

Hey there,

I'm really interested in applying to Purdue's Aeronautical Engineering program, and I'm not entirely sure what my chances are.

Here are my stats:

GPA Weighted-3.17
SAT-1680. Taking it again in December...Doing the Huntington SAT Prep so hopefully that will bring that score up a lot
All advanced classes...
Senior
Tons of EC's...
Cross Country, Indoor and Outdoor Track team all four years
Lots of community service
On the robotics team (VEX and FIRST Robotics)
If anyone knows what NYLF is, I've done that
Held two jobs, one of which being a counselor at BSA Camp Ottari.
Many of my extracurriculars and activities relate to my interest.
I'm on track to have a 3.26 GPA by the end of the semester if I keep up what I've been doing...which is a whole lot better than any of my other years. In the tenth grade I was diagnosed with epilepsy and was prescribed a medication that slowed my mental processing, thus resulting in a decline in my grades which I just started to pick back up. Which is all described in a letter from my guidance counselor in my applications...and I have tons of recommendations.

Anyways, Purdue is my dream school and I'd love to know my chances.

Hey there,

I am also applying to Purdue at the same major as you.

I do think that you stand good chances of being admitted.
Take the last year admissions as statistics:

2010 Freshman Profile:

Range SAT Critical Reading 490-610
Range SAT Math 530-660
Rage SAT Writing 490-600

% of applicants accepted 72

If you can improve your SAT score, that would be even better. Do your best on the application essays and good luck :)

Regards,
Sandro Rodrigues

Sweet, I have yet to see anyone applying into the same major. I wrote my essay already…Has everything to do with my interest in engineering and aeronautics. It’s got kind of a sappy story in it :P. I’m getting some teachers to edit it for me. Are you in state or out of state? I feel like Purdue takes preference over in state students which makes me nervous because I’m from Virginia. All I’m really aiming for is to raise my SAT math to about 650 maybe…im at 580 right now.

I mean, based on the statistics, I’m not THAT worried, it’s just that engineering admission stats are always different…that’s what worries me.

Does Purdue engineering have any minimum SAT/ACT scores for its engineering program? If so, what are they?

Since you’re out of state, does that mean that your parents will pay the $40k per year for you to go there? If not, Purdue won’t be affordable for you.

What other schools are you applying to?

I’ve looked all over Purdue’s engineering site and all across the internet for SAT requirements and I’m pretty sure they don’t have any. As far as the cost of Purdue, my parents are well aware. They know how much I want to go to Purdue and are willing to pay for it. We aren’t the wealthiest of families, but we can manage it. As far as other schools I’m applying to:
VCU
Clemson
Cal Poly
Arizona State
a few others I cant think of off the top of my head
and I’ve been accepted to UNC-Charlotte

Dumb question…

Is aerospace engineering the same as aeronautical engineering? If not, what is the difference?

Admission into Purdue is not a guarantee that you’ll be admitted into their engineering program.

It does look like Purdue does look at stats for admission into their engineering program, but it doesn’t state a minimum req’t.

*Admissions Criteria

Your admission as a new student into the Schools of Engineering at Purdue is determined by a combination of rank in class, test scores, probability of success, grade average in college preparatory subjects, grades in courses related to the degree objective, trends in achievement, completion of high school subject matter requirements, the strength of the college preparatory program, and information provided by your high school counselor. All applicants who have not completed a full year of college work are required to take the SAT-I or the ACT. Students are encouraged to take either the SAT-I or the ACT in the spring of their junior year. Students who attend a nonaccredited high school or who are home-schooled are strongly encouraged to take SAT II tests in English, math, and a lab science. *

Aeronautical Engineering is a specialization inside the Aerospace Engineering major, just as Astronautical Engineering.

Aerospace engineering is the broader subject. Aeronautical engineering deals with atmospheric flight while astronautical deals with space flight.
