Could my own school cost me my admission?

Hello everyone!

I am currently completely stressing out about getting admitted to to the University of Pittsburgh! I sent in my application on september 30th complete with SAT (1400), activities resume, three letters of recommendation, great essay, etc. The problem is my transcript. I requested it over a month ago sometime in the first or second week of september and my school has still not sent it to pitt. I ask the guidance dept. a couple of weeks ago and they said they'd get to it and it wouldn't affect my chances of admission. BUt because of rolling admission, won't it affect my chances? Now I am so worried that all my hard work to get my application in early will be totally useless because my school will have sent my transcript late canceling the benefit of that early application! What should I do? Will this keep me from being admitted? I have a weighted gpa of 3.99 if that helps?

Also, I had an interview with an admissions officer at pitt when i visited recently and she said that i was essentially in but that they really needed the "official" transcript to make the decision (though she had a transcript that was from the school but "unofficial.")

all I can think of right now is urging/encouraging the guidance department to send it in soon, if you really want. though, they really aren't supposed to start looking at applications until that deadline (Nov 1st), and if your school promises it'll get there by then, guess you can trust them. :/

but there is no nov. 1st deadline at pitt....they review applications as they come and send decisions out as soon as a week after...

ahh sorry, i am just so stressed about this! I have already bugged the guidance dept. about it, i just don't know what to do!

Pushy parent weighing in here........ if you were my kid I would go to the registrar or main office and get an official transcript in a sealed envelope. Most schools have a stamp they'll put over the sealed envelope flap that says "official transcript", but if not get the registrar to sign it over the flap and affix a business card to the outside of the envelope or something. Then you could send that to the college yourself.

But then my patience with inept bureaucracy is very short indeed. Do you have a pushy parent who would be willing to intercede for you? (Or perhaps you're just happy you're not my kid. ;) )

get your parents to call...emphasize that you need it done NOW for scholarships, etc...

at my school, they assume if it's rolling, that they don't have to bother. make sure that isnt' the case.

my mom said she would go in, but i'm afraid she's not pushy enough to get the transcript herself. I mean, my school is really crazy about transcripts. I don't know, they send them out by "priority" in regards to deadlines but because pitt doesn't have a deadline....? I just feel so angry at my guidance counselor for not being more attentive to the situation. I certainly understand that they have tons going on this time of year and my transcript is by far not the only that needs to be sent, but i requested in over a month ago, and i think that is plenty of time!

It is plenty of time. It should have gone out in a week.

any ideas about my chance of getting in based on my stats?

1400 and 3.99 weighted gpa?

You have a great chance. Get your parent to go to the office with you.

I got my acceptance letter from UPitt about 2 weeks ago. I sent my transcript in Mid-September

The delay may cost you scholarship money. Your counselor should be fired.

At my son's school, they wouldn't even accept requests for transcripts until late September. The transcripts usually are accompanied by the school profile and counselor statement, which takes time to put together as you can imagine. Similarly to what was said above, our solution for one early deadline was to just go in and get the transcript and send it in on its own. I got in touch with both the counselor and registrar prior to my son going in just to make sure it was all okay, and we made sure the college was okay with getting the transcript from us rather than the school (they were, as long as it was in a sealed envelope). The registrar's office still gave my son grief but he got the transcript. Go in there and insist they give it to you in a sealed envelope and send it on your own. My son actually is also planning on applying to Pitt but has such a logjam with other applications and school demands he has not gotten to it yet.

Your GC should absolutely be fired.

I took a year off from school, and when I started requesting applications they just got 'em done - usually within 2-3 days, even when the school required a GC statement. I'm not even a student there, barely knew my GC, and they were still THAT timely.

This situation is kind of ridiculous because even if the GC wants to fill out a statement, etc. for every transcript, each one should really only take an hour at the absolute MOST.

I don't know how pushy you are but you may want to casually mention that the earlier they get your transcript sent in, the better your chances are, and if you get accepted it will be a bragging point for your school, especially the guidance office. You should also mention that you may be forced to go to the registrar or principal to get an official copy of your transcript (this may make the GC a little nervous because his/her ineptitude would be unveiled).

Send your mom in, even if she's not pushy. Schools (even public schools) are eager to keep parents happy.

Best wishes.
