I’m considering embellishing on a personal story… my grandfather (a jewish immigrant and WWII vet) went to UMd. under the GI bill and flunked out after like a semester. But he still likes Maryland and all of his children went there and are now fairly successful. My sister goes there, so I’m pretty much obligated so go there. But I don’t think, or want, freshmen connection will work out.

wait guys, true story: i just found our mail, and i got letter from salisbury. they gave me a 3k/year scholarship. meaning that it’ll only cost me 11k a year to go there! and my parents will pay me 9k a year too!

i guess i was so busy bumming about umd i forgot to look at the mail.

i mean, it’s not great and i’m still mad but it’s still nice to know somewhere loves me.

^^That’s great man grats. I am receiving 10k a year from umbc, which means I only pay 8k a year total. But there’s just something about UMD that makes me feel at home you know? I grew up spending some weekends at Terps games, including one home game during the 2002 super awesome national championship season. UMD is not my favorite school ever but between that and UMBC, I feel a certain attachment to this school.

Wow it’s past midnight. I have officially spent an entire day on a website sulking over an admissions decision. Gawd I hate college.

Yeah Salisbury gave me my 3k scholarship recently too, it was a nice feeling knowing that I’m wanted. A much better feeling than a grudgingly worded “acceptance” letter. Congrats. But yeah, there’s something about Maryland. I might have to just tough out the first semester somewhere I don’t want to be if it means going to Maryland.

And wow, @misterpop92, you’re right. This forum was started about 13 hours ago and there’s already 9 pages on it. Considering the topic, this is either the saddest forum topic ever or a monumental achievement. I’ve done nothing all day except reply on this forum, play Call of Duty, and try to get my friends to stop doing the weird congratulating/consoling thing to me. Some Saturday. Lol.

buster, you’re not guaranteed housing for spring semester if you’re not a fall admit but you should be ok since you’re #1 on the priority list for spring housing. I sent my housing request in exactly TWO weeks before they sent the email to ALL spring admits letting them know that they got housing, which was late august. remember after fall semester ends, there will be people moving out of dorms/suites/apts for many different reasons so room will always open up.

I got offered a $2500 a year to umbc as well. Everytime I visited while my sister attended there though I thought it was rather dull. Plus I believe umbc is a math-science school and I don’t really plan to major in those areas soooo lol

by the way…if you plan on getting on-campus housing, don’t be afraid to ask for a suite or apartment! I asked for a suite like a week before the housing due date and I’m so glad I got it! :)

and yeah I’ve been posting alot on here too…and I’m actually home today. If it were up to me I definitely would’ve gone out but there’s so much snow grrr

Most of you have been very helpful and informative (especially goodday91). My D checked the website yesterday afternoon and was so upset because she only read the first line – that she wasn’t admitted for Fall. Last night, while she was out, I decided to read what was on the admit page and saw she was, in fact, admitted for Spring (no waitlist for Fall). Texted her and she was thrilled. She has already been accepted to 4 other schools - but none of her top 3 (UMD is in the top 3). Made her feel so good that she wasn’t completely rejected, particulary because UMD was definitely a reach for her. While she was out, I read up on Freshman Connection (mostly here), but it’s probably not an option because we are out of state. With the Spring admit to UMD, I am really thinking now that she will get into her other top 2 choices. When she got home, she was excited to think she could start somewhere else and go to UMD in the Spring.

I thought applying to 9 schools was going to give her too many options. Now with this Spring admit, it just adds more choices. Oh God. This is going to be so hard!

Of course, we have to wait until MARCH for the rest of the decisions!!!

Good luck to all of you. UMD isn’t the only school and, even if you have your heart set on it, remember you have other choices. Wherever you go, have a great attitude and you will do well and have a great time.

Has anyone actually been rejected/denied acceptance completely? Is it possible that in lieu of denying someone acceptance, UM is accepting them for Spring 2011 perhaps 1) in hopes that people will not accept or 2) cushion themselves for when students drop out. Does this sound crazy? Just read all the posts and not one person was denied acceptance. I was accepted for spring and waitlisted for fall. Strong SAT=2140, but low GPA=3.16 (due to poor sophomore year). Strong application essays/short answers. No honors/AP, but great electives and strong courses otherwise. So-Is there anyone out there that was denied acceptance or heard of anyone that was completely denied acceptance?

@japh222, i know of at least two people that were straight up rejected. i thought the same, but it definitely happens. like i said earlier, one of them had a 2070 sat.

After a couple hours of sleep I’m starting to think that this isn’t as bad as I thought it was yesterday. Yeah, sure, it sucks, but it’s just a semester. I think I can live with that. If it wasn’t for the fact that I worked so hard to get into this school I’d be completely fine, it just sort of hurts the pride. It also kind of sucks knowing that if I wouldn’t have taken AP’s and honors I would have had a better shot at getting in. The whole college process is screwed up. But honestly, after the initial shock, I’m growing a lot more ok with this.

Does anyone know if AP credits can be transferred so that you can skip those CORE classes and jump into regular fall?
This is getting extremely annoying, I’ve already gotten into 5 schools but UMD was by far the cheapest. This is just a giant wrench in my plans.

I’ve only known two kids that have gone through the Freshman Connection. My daughter’s friend did it last semester and went to the games with her, parties, etc. He just hated the fact that he commuted and wasn’t experiencing the college experience in the dorms, etc. The classes are usually longer and later in the day. He couldn’t wait till spring semester began. He did luck out with a great dorm situation surprisingly–has a great suite in South, I believe. I would say if you REALLY want to go to UMD, then it is only one semester to miss out on and you will have 3 1/2 more years of the college experience living on/near campus.

If you decide on Freshman Connection, but attend another college/community college for fall semester~~~~

UMD has a link where you enter your college name if you attend somewhere else fall semester and it lists all the courses that transfer to UMD. Even all Montgomery College credits DO NOT transfer, so be careful.
