Could Someone please explain this to me about Freshman connection program?

@linymom, your daughter and i have so much in common:) i got into uconn also, as well as umass amherst, SUNY albany, and James Madison. Deferred from Northeastern so i am waiting on their final decision (although i don’t really have much of an interest in it) and still waiting on UDel and Binghamton. I would have applied to American in a heartbeat if it was bigger and less expensive, especially because i’m looking to go into Public Policy (which UDel has a specific school for). yeah my naviance also shows below avg to UMD and matching for UDel. PM me with any more questions or anything, i realize this is probably off topic but for some reason the PM won’t work for me.

jbevanglista: You can compare stats from here to the end of the world… sometimes it stil seems arbitrary! My D didn’t even submit SATs; she sent in ACTs. There’s a place for everyone. I had this talk with my D. She will do well and make a ton of friends wherever she goes. And now she has UMD in her back pocket for Spring, in case the school she goes to in August/September doesn’t work out. Not a bad thing.

It’s just unfortunate that the waiting still goes on…

"Freshmen Abroad: Destination London

This year, 16 students will be given an exciting opportunity to join the inaugural class of our new “Freshmen Abroad: Destination London” program during the fall semester. Students admitted for Spring 2011 will be selected to apply for this international experience, during which they will be taught by University of Maryland faculty at the London Metropolitan University. We look forward to expanding this program to additional countries in the future!"

Did anyone get information on this in their online decisions? Specifically being selected to apply?

^^ I didn’t get that.

Update: Got my letter. If this was supposed to be an “acceptance” letter, why couldn’t they spurge on color ink and a big envelope? I know it sounds petty but but it kind of conveys their attitude towards me.

It’s not the official letter though. On this letter it says to expect the official one in 2 weeks. Maybe that one will be the big colored bundle of joy.

I got the letter too. And yeah, a packet would have been nice. It didn’t really say anything that the internet didn’t already say. Hopefully the packet will have some information. Or yeah, at least something other than black ink. I don’t know why the lack of color bothers me, but I guess it does anyways.

I met with my college councilor who is as perplexed as I am as to why I wasn’t admitted for the fall. He said that maybe it’s because I applied for Computer Science and not Letters and Sciences, and all my good grades/teacher recommendations are in English and History classes. He’s having me email some people he knows at UMD and he’s going to put in a conference call to find stuff out. He also said that UMD is very unpredictable with the waitlist, and last year two people who were admitted spring semester and not waitlisted (last year’s senior class had about 100 people, 27 applied to UMD, not sure how many were admitted for the Spring) were admitted for the fall (they found out after May 1st). Anyways, he said not to count on that, but there is a sliver of hope. Point is, they can be very unpredictable.

Got my brand new laptop stolen yesterday. The one I worked all Summer/school year to get that I was going to use fall semester at UMD. Best week ever. Lol. At least the snow day today was nice.

I called down there today and they told me that 3400 kids were accepted into the spring semester start. They seemed very positive about the freshman connection program so I think I’ll take it more seriously. They encouraged me to attend one of the open houses.

No letter for me yet…

lol honestly don’t expect anything super fancy from umd except for a maryland magnet with your “official” letter. I was disappointed too cause umbc went all out with their acceptance letter/package. :p

The picture was nice!

I haven’t gotten a letter yet either… I never even got an email from them telling me the decisions were up. I’m looking forward to the “official” letter with more info…

I got my letter today. I was a bit disappointed because my fall admit friends were talking about their car magnets they got yesterday.

lol you’ll get your magnet with your official letter in like a week or two.

nah it doesnt mean ur in waitlist, you can get the fall waitlist in addition to the spring admission it would say it on ht eletter.
i got that **** too, i mean havin a place of my own will be sick,u can just throw parties and rip tubes

i spoke to my sister’s roommate today (she goes to umd) who did the freshman connection program and she encouraged me to strongly consider it. she said the classes were fun, small, and not difficult because they are mostly cores and that she herself completed 12 core credits but looking back on it felt she could have done more. she also mentioned that the housing request (if you plan on being on campus spring semester) should be completed ASAP as she did hers quite late and ended up not being pulled into a dorm by a friend until her sophomore year.

i’m becoming more optimistic! still between penn state and umd

lmao really? I sent my housing requests REALLY late…like, I sent in the official request for on campus housing exactly two weeks before they sent the mass email telling everyone they got housing, and then I emailed asking for a suite two weeks before the specific housing requests deadline in dec. :stuck_out_tongue: I really didn’t think I’d get any of what I asked…but I did and I’m so happy. ha

not that I’m endorsing it. do it as soon as you can anyway. lol

I am considering freshman connection but my parents are really nervous about it. We are in the Boston area, I don’t anyone else who even applied to UMD and wouldn’t know where to start to find an apartment and roommates. My mom and I are planning a trip to one of the open houses and hopefully will get more info. If anyone knows anyone that did the FC or started UMD in the spring maybe you could get them to write a post or two and we could message them with any detailed questions.

Went up to Maryland today and also visited the “view apartments”. They’re pretty nice, so I guess that could be a good place to start looking. Also, if you go to open house on Feb. 28 or whatever other dates they have it, you’ll probably find students who you can arrange rent with.

Btw…don’t make my mistake by going up there during rush hour. Beltway traffic turns a 30 min drive into a 2 hour drive. Dam that car ride sucked.

I want to live in the apartments but I doubt I can afford 900$ a month

That’s for one room right? I think that fits a couple people. Round to 1k. Split the rent with 2-3 people. $250 per person? not too bad. Maybe I’m wrong here though.
