Hey everyone,

Last night I wrote this essay (it was from Kaplan's book from a couple of years ago), and would like to know if it could be considered a 6, or at least a 5. I'll list the prompt and my essay here. (By the way, it filled up both pages except for 3 lines).

Think carefully about the issues presented in the following quotations and the assignment below.

Our fundamental task as human beings is to seek out connections - to exercise our imaginations. It follows, then, that the basic task of education is the care and feeding of the imagination.

-Katherine Paterson, "The Spying Heart," 1989

Most higher education is devoted to affirming the traditions and origins of an existing elite and transmitting them to new members.

-Mary Catherine Bateson, "Composing a Life," 1989

Assignment: Should a college education focus on cultivating and encouraging the imagination of students or on teaching basic facts and standards so that we all share a certain amount of common knowledge? Plan and write an essay... blah blah blah lol.

A college education can be distributed in various ways. However, in order for a person to be successful in this world, college education should focus on cultivating and encouraging the imagination of studnts. Creativity is the very essence that produces novel ideals and inventions that always appeal to the general public.

Continuing with that thought, a very famous Spanish painter, Pablo Picasso, was a creative genius. Since he was educated by imagining and producing abstract ideas, he dramatically influenced the world. His most abstract painting, Guernica, is a connection between the imagination and reality. His paintings from the Blue Period (e.g. "El Viejo Guitarrista") represent true creativity. Such a creative and profound artist truly succeeded in this world!

In addition, my 7th grade science teacher, always challenged my class' minds and tested the limits of our imaginations. She knew that creativity was key in succeeding. Preparing us to think outside the box was very vital! In this world, if you don't have enough imagination, you can kiss success goodbye.

Also, have you ever known someone who could succeed, solely by relying on knowledge? A fireman can know all the procedures for an emergency by heart, but if something unexpected occurs and he/she cannot adapt to the situation, he/she will ultimately fail. If a surgeon has memorized exactly how to perform heart surgery, but accidently punctures the patient's heart and cannot summan an imaginative solution, the patient may very well end up dead. Being taught just facts will surely end up a failure.

Overall, imagination is not some superfluos fairyland quality. It is a crucial requirement needed by anyone who wishes to study in college. Certainly facts and knowledge are important, but being able to process and expand that knowledge will really ensure success. Creativity and imagination are not just for kids; they are essential in order for a college student to be successful.

I know there a couple mispellings and awkward sentences, but is it good enough to get a 5 or a 6?

Thank you very much for taking the time to read it, and I appreciate all feedback!
