If people work less, would they became more creative or less creative in their free time ?
In today’s industrial society, most of works are to fulfill the need of other industries; people work in intense schedule and tasks and their product are tightly bind with standard or customers’s expectation. Days after days, people start to lose their own creativities that only free time, space and activity would provide. So if people have more leisure time beside monotonous works, they will have a better chance to be creative and active.
Google, a company with the best working environment to stimulate creativities, has a fundamental policy that gives all the employees paid free time for them to work on their passions, which means anything they like. In those minutes, their employees are not constrained with missions or rushed by time, they can fully devote into something they always want to do. Surprisingly, the ideas contrived during those leisure time are much more than those in paid hours; more than that, they came up with long effective ideas such as Google Map and Gmail. Creativities are inspired more in the sake of passion but not finishing works.
Some people are deprived of hobbies when they are circumscribed by jobs they never like and just needed to make money. Nashi Kacukawa once pointed out in his book No Longer Living, people hardworking to live but not for love are living to eat and eat to live; their lives are miserable. When I look at people without a creative job and doing work such as market cashier or waitress, I always think, will they be an artist if they get a chance, what do they do when they are not working. But in fact, most of those have more than one mechanic jobs filling up all the gaps of their life. So many jobs today are needed today by repeating the same movement tediously, regardless that people in those live routines never get a chance to truly live. There are so may sad examples nowadays like Susan Mary who finally found her talent after she retired and became a great singer, when she finally got a chance to breath.
Under the pressure of long hour working society, people can hardly pursuit their will or completely manage their lives. If society could give more freedom and leisure to individuals, they will contrive more and more ideas and creativity ever.
