My D will be a freshman in the fall. I was hoping to see a sample course listing with days and times of classes - mainly so I can figure out airline reservations for her to come home for Thanksgiving. Can a current student help me out with this? Have current students already registered for fall classes and if so, is there a listing online? I am specifically intersted in Arts & Sciences classes. Do most students wait until Tuesday night to travel home or do they leave earlier? How flexible are professors with this? TIA

If you go there and click on the area of study, the website should have a link to class schedules.

can’t answer the other questions (yet)!

Current students have registered for classes (the registration period just ended).

Incoming freshman register over the summer… at least in most of the undergrad colleges. Your advisor will contact you sometime over the summer to register for classes, see what you’re interested in studying, and tell you about special programs.

Optional (but recommended to meet new people, get familiar with campus, etc) Art Sci students are invited to attend one of several “Arts & Sciences weekends” over the summer where you’ll meet with your advisor and register for classes.

Since most freshman are taking 100-200 level classes, there isn’t really a worry about being locked out of any classes. I wasn’t wait-listed, nor were any of my friends, for a single class during all of freshman year.

This is the main searchable system for all classes across all undergrad divisions: https://acadinfo.wustl.edu/wucrsl/SQLPages/WUCrsLWeb_select_semester.htm
(it’s pretty ugly but i hear it’s being redesigned soon)

Regarding leaving home for breaks – really depends on what your schedule is and who your professors are. Some are lenient with it, while other classes are basically imperative to attend every class (not because it’s a requirement, but because you’ll be behind if you miss out on a session). Ultimately, it’s college, and you’re responsible for your own schedule… you don’t need to call the principal’s office if you go home early :)

Most students do leave for Thanksgiving break on Tuesday evening… a sizeable amount leave Wednesday morning (however, tickets will clearly be more $$ because that’s a heavy travel day nationwide), and many choose to leave Monday evening. Some even go home that whole week (very very rare, but it happens).

One thing to keep in mind: It seems to be a yearly thing that in the majority of my classes, I have an inordinate amount of exams, papers, and group projects due the week after Thanksgiving. There’s such a short period of time between Thanksgiving and Winter break, so you really only have two full weeks of classes before final exams. The week after Thanksgiving can be brutal for work, so it may be worthwhile to come back to campus on Saturday so you have more time to finish work and don’t have to do it at home.

well, this is the university’s coure listing website, you can check it here.

http://courses.wustl.edu/

There has been some talk about Thanksgiving break being a whole week for 2010- so until you see the posting for Thanksgiving break, I wouldn’t make plane reservations. I don’t know what is taking them so long to decide, I just know they have been discussing this change.

Last year I made Thanksgiving reservations for my freshman son during the summer. They were on Southwest, so there was no penalty for changing flights. Of course, it’s really difficult to judge how early your son/daughter can leave until classes start and they get their syllabus. Some professors cancel Tuesday classes and some don’t. This year I’ll just wait to make reservation until after my son gets his syllabus.

Thank you all for the helpful responses. One further question - are the dorms open on Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend if D wanted to go back that day?

PAO- the dorms are open all through break. If a student wants to, they can actually stay all through break (without having to pay as well).

Another possibility: talk to your professors for tuesday classes.
this school year, I only had labs on tuesdays and thursdays (and one 1 hour math class). I emailed the professors for the labs and confirmed that labs would not be held that week. I chose not to go to DiffEQ and got the notes later, and left early on monday.

How about Christmas? Are the dorms open during that time? You see, as an int’l, I don’t think I have anywhere to go during Christmas.

The dorms are open during Winter Break. I do not know if you have to pay extra to stay during winter break (if you do need to pay, it would be a nominal fee).

Dorms are open during Thanksgiving and I’m positive you do NOT ned to pay extra money during those days.

There are a few dining locations are still open during Thanksgiving and Christmas. Last year, the dining location on the South 40 (where the dorms are) actually had a Thanksgiving dinner meal for all of the people who stayed on campus! Which is mostly international students, obviously. Sounded more fun than my Thanksgiving at home… I wish I stayed, haha :)

The dorms are open over Thanksgiving, but I am pretty sure that the students must leave for winter break (there may be exceptions for internationals)

I know this post is a bit old, but you can stay during Winter Break (but you get charged for it).

Also in terms of wanting to see classes, a Wash U student made a website

WooCourses

That is a lot easier to read than the regular course listings site, and allows for searching, etc.

Also as for booking trips on Thanksgiving…classes to take place the Wednesday of spring break weekends. Many people leave after Tuesday classes if their Wednesday schedule is light. But some professors do get ****ed if half the class is missing on Wednesday and I have had more than a couple pop quizzes on the Wednesday so that I generally leave Wednesday afternoon.

The academic calendar states that there are no classes on the Wed. before Thanksgiving.

marcdvl is incorrect.

There are no classes on that Wednesday (well, at least in all 5 undergrad schools).

i hope they do redesign that soon… fyi the “search” function is utterly borked - i’ve tried using it to search through all the SS classes offered (I need to take 6 units since i’m in engineering) and the search only returns like 40% of the SS classes that are actually being offered each semester. Haven’t found any pattern to which classes it does/doesn’t show, but it was really depressing at first when I couldn’t find any SS classes I wanted to take (knowing there are more now helps, though )

I’m guessing the Wednesday is a new thing…I’m pretty sure I had classes on Wednesday a couple years ago.
