Course Signup

When will we be told to sign up for courses and how will we do so. Is there a list of courses that we can choose from and do we work with our academic advisor during this process?

If you do your homework ( ) on this board, you will see numerous references to how that is done. But for your edification, its a tad different at LC than at RH. At RH, they pick your courses based on what they know about you and your high school transcript, for core curriculum courses (and levels) first semester. You meet with your advisor during orientation week and some adjustments are made. Also, some kids add drop very fast (I call them the boo birds…who flit around looking for easy courses and easy professors…they disgust me) in the first week of school. Second semester at RH you have an opportunity to sign up near the end of the semester with your advisor helping you map out a plan…basically to get rid of your core graduation requirements…and probe about your possible intended major.

In short, first semester they do it, subject to some override once you get there, and second semester you are much more in control. There are online language exams for those wanting to test out or get into upper division language courses, which is what my kid did…which was interesting…and daring. But it all worked out.

At RH my son filled out an extensive survey over the summer about his interests/APs etc. and the school came up with and gave him his first semester schedule during orientation. If there is any problem with that schedule (ex. you didn’t get proper credit for APs, you are in the wrong level of language etc.) then you will have a chance to meet with your dean during orientation and make any necessary changes. Mostly you take core classes but it important to get everything right. After the first semester, you self-schedule. I am told that at LC all students self-schedule even for first semester freshman year but I am not positive.

LC students self-schedule and RH don’t? I wonder why they do it differently.
