creating your own occupation

anybody posting here start their own business, especially an online one? I am really interested in either starting an online business or creating a popular website that I can make advertising money off of. However, I do not have many ideas as to what I should do. lol. any ideas? suggestions? anyone want to be a business partner?

What do you enjoy? If you are going to start a business or website, you will spend an enormous amount of time getting it started and even more maintaining it. I have a website that is not intended to turn a profit (although it does have ads, which pay for the server) and I honestly don't have the time to properly maintain it. I do this as a hobby, so I don't devote the time to it I would to a business venture as you wish to undertake.

From my web experience, I can tell you that it would require a substantial amount of time and money (at least for a student, it is possible with a few 100 if you are good or have friends) upfront before you can expect any kind of sponsor to pay you a decent amount.

For an online business, I don't really know how you get everything you need (like credit card processing). But once you get that you will have to pay quite a bit on advertising yourself so people find your site. It would be beneficial if you can find products to sell in a special niche that is under-represented on the web but has a high demand (maybe retro products that are hard to find ???)

Oh, and if you are feeling like an over-achieving entrepreneur, there is good money in developing new systems for doing old things. This, is obviously a lot more difficult to do, but could bring great rewards. ie, have you ever been doing something, online or off, and thought "It would be so much easier to do " or "I wish I could do _." Chances are, others will desire the same thing and you could make a business out of making it happen.

Hope this helps.
