crime at syracuse u.

another female student was mugged yesterday and was injured badly when her purse was stolen by the usual suspects. if crime does not figure into your assessment, you’re dreaming. there are very very very many assaults on the hill that you are not made aware of if you don’t live in syracuse.

What is "the hill’? Is this a place the students go frequently? Can anyone else comment on this?

bump

the hill is where the campus is. in the past su was pretty insulated from the rest of the city. the campus has expanded so much they push the boundaries of safety in an ever increasingly impoverished city. all industry has left town. the only businesses left are education, hospitals, crime, and government. crime being the only real growth industry. NEVER walk alone there. especially between the hours of noon and noon.

Thanks…

I’m hearing these disturbing scenes that occur at SU. I will attend in the Fall, and I had planned to walk or jogged and bike throughout the city of Syracuse or beyond SU campus. Now it seems like I will have to take precautions or not jog at all.

Whoa whoa whoa. Where are you guys getting this information from? It is not true AT ALL.

First of all, Syracuse is located in an urban setting in the middle of a city. The campus is open and crimes happen in cities. It’s as simple as that.

Second of all, the crimes you guys are talking about didn’t happen. I don’t know who told you this but as a student of SU we are notified of EVERY incident that happens on campus. I’m pretty sure that my peers and I would be more aware of what’s happening outside our doors and I haven’t heard anything that you guys are talking about. Two weeks ago a girl was groped while walking along Walnut and last week some guys were going around scamming people into giving them money. Yes these things are negative, yes they can be deterrents, but you’re kidding yourself if you think that a school with an open campus located in an urban setting is going to be perfectly safe 100% of the time. This has nothing to do with Syracuse and everything to do with the placement of universities as a whole.

Third of all, it’s up to each individual student to ensure their own safety to a certain degree. DPS, professors, RA’s, other students will all tell you that if you’re going anywhere at any time only bring what you need: a bookbag if necessary, your room key, and your ID. If you don’t need your wallet, don’t bring your purse. They educate you here about what to do and how to handle situations so that you become less of a target and can stay safer. Everyday people here are making sure that no one goes out alone.

Don’t try and scare people off like this. It isn’t fair to them. I understand educating people so that they know what they’re getting into but if they go to any big university with an open campus located in a city these are going to be things that they will face. Don’t act as if Cuse is magically more dangerous than other schools because it’s not. And you trying to instill fear in people isn’t helping them at all. Things happen out in the real world, it’s a fact of life. If you don’t want to go to school in a urban setting then that’s fine, but Cuse doesn’t have some super special crime committers roaming around campus.

@syracuse19 Agree with everything you said, but what he said did apparently happen, although it looks like the locals were involved and not SU students…

It sounds like someone got rejected by Syracuse last spring.

@TomSrOfBoston he’s been around these parts being a negative nellie for a long time, using different usernames. It’s all a big “whatever” at this point.

When I lived in Syracuse, (back in the 60’s), you had to be really good at running or you were going to get beaten or stabbed.

And it hasn’t changed?

Phone was actually not stolen, although he was knocked down. Not saying it’s good, but again, walking alone at night not advised in many locations in the US on or near campuses.

Almost every major city based university borders a rough neighborhood. SU is no better or worse in that regard. Using good judgement and being safe applies to all off these schools. If you want as safe as possible then look for a rural isolated campus. In addition, the above poster has a series of negative posts against SU so take with a grain of salt.
