Does anyone know whether the dance scholarships are based strictly upon the audition or if grades / test scores are factored in as well? Any insight would be appreciated!
My daughter’s “big” is the recipient of the dance scholarship for the class of 2019 - I will ask!
I asked - she didn’t know exactly what criteria it was based on. There are two awards given every year. She is a senior this year and is the only one. There were two - but the other person declined and Case did not give to the next person. There are two in my daughter’s class. The senior is a classically trained ballerina, is very petite. One of the winners in my daughter’s class is also a classically trained ballerina, has a very ballet body type. The other winner is more of a competition type dancer - trained in multiple genres, non typical body type.
Being the recipient of the award she said, made her feel obligated to participate more in all of the school’s dance productions - take an active role. She is also a psychology double major. The winners in my daughter’s class also have other majors.
My daughter did not audition because Case was a last minute application - a recommendation for nursing from her college counselor. Had she known, she would have auditioned.
My daughter’s friend, did mention that there are a lot more applicants this year. Having modern experience and knowledge of Graham, in particular may help.
The only reason I mention body type is just experience with some dance programs. My daughter had a friend that has body type, was a late ballerina, but was accepted to more programs than another dance friend who was trained classically, had near perfect technique, but was petite but bottom heavy.
Merde to your dancer.
Thank you wildcatmom16 for your thoughtful reply. I appreciate the insight. My D has the body type and the training. It remains to be seen whether they think she has the talent. Parents were able to watch part of the audition (ballet class with current students) and I must say the other auditioners were impressive. My D really likes CWRU a lot and her day spent during the audition process was quite rewarding. Given the talent of the others, she truly was happy just to have made it to the live audition round. She was the only one during her solo audition to dance a truly modern piece. This made her a little nervous as several of the others did more competition style pieces with a lot of turns and tricks. She can do those but thought they were looking for modern. I can’t say enough about how wonderful everyone was in the Dance Department - both students and faculty. We should know the results within the next week or so. Thanks agai!
Merde to your daughter! My daughter has class on Mondays, Wednesdays and was asked to come later because auditions were running late. She said she saw a lot of “tricks” as well and the head of the department “hates” tricks.
My daughter was not classically trained. She didn’t even really compete. She has been fortunate though, to have really good instructors who have taken her under their wings - including the one at Case.
I hope everything works out!
Thank you so much for that insight!
