Critics on my portfolio, please?????

It has been half of summer break and i am currently working on my portfolio..

I just think it would be nice if i could get some critics or advice from people.

So...here's my profile :

school: private high
GPA: around 2.9
schools i would apply: RISD, art center school of design, school of visual art, parsons and MICA.
PORTFOLIO: BLINK

Any one think i could get into RISD or any of the schools?????? Is my GPA too low????
Any advice????

I am a International student who is currently studying in an us high school.
Haven't took SAT yet. ....

I would say that your portfolio could use a lot of work. There’s not much in there to tell a potential admissions officer how you think or what your interests are (these are the most important things). American art schools have relatively high admission rates so I can’t really say where you’re likely to be taken. RISD and Parson’s like candidates with demonstrated technical skill so i guess in that respect you may be fine whereas sva, art center and mica like to see more experimentation and individuality in their applicants and in that respect, you may not be fine.

My advice for a better portfolio (and better admission chances) would be to spend some more time with art history books and go out and see some good museums. Find something you love and think about why you like it. That may be a good starting point to begin being able to evaluate your own work. Also don’t be too rigid, you only need to demonstrate your technical skill once or twice in a portfolio. I think across the board, most art schools want to see experimentation and personal interests in an applicants portfolio rather than an endless series of still lives and nude drawings. They have to look at thousands of them every year and most of the times they aren’t that interesting.

kaelyn, Thank you so much. I would definitely consider your advice.

my gawd kaelyn is back (and haven’t changed a bit)
OP
study SAT and let’s see.
I don’t see any reason “academic” artschools wouldn’t want you.
like, kids don’t draw anymore before they’d ever learn to draw technically.
to me it’s precious too see something like this once in a while.
eh… are you Asian?

Yes, i’m Asian.
and what do you mean by " academic" art schools?

RISD, MICA, Yale (UG), WashU, maybe CMU.
SAIC, SMFA sort I bet you have no problem “getting in” but may not win biggest scholarships for the reason old kaelyn stated, but do you need money?
we should have asked what is your intended major and why.
I just assumed painting and drawing from your works.
then why SVA and Parsons? is it location?
and Art Center, or are you in CA?
then again, fine art in Art Center is said to be concept driven but I did see solid traditional “skill” there (and lots of Asians) than any other top schools.
It all depends.

As far as admission is concerned, I’m fairly sure you’d be accepted to SVA. You’ve got basic, very solid technical skill! Bravo!
As far as RISD (and possibly MICA) goes, you need to get that GPA up to probably a 3.4+. If drawing and painting is your intended major, then you definitely need to consider SAIC. Quite possibly as good if not better drawing/painting departments as RISD.

I kind of like to major in illustration, but recently i have changed my mind to fashion design a little bit…
That’s why i consider Parsons, and also it’s in NYC.

RISD has always been my dream school, and i heard that both of the majors are great there.
But I don’t know if my GPA and SAT would satisfy the school…
Plus RISD doesn’t give International student any scholarship or aid.

I don’t really need money, but if both of the schools admit me and Parsons gives me some money, I would probably go there…

Also, I know it’s okay to double major in RISD, but for Parsons…???

Thank you for your replies…

Saic saic saic saic ;)

brokenapertures,
I heard that SAIC has decent graduate fine art program …
but I don’t really wanna apply for undergraduate…

Update:

Just got my TOEFL score: 89
RISD asked for 93 on the internet based test.
I would probably try a second time.

anyone else???

Another suggestion on your portfolio would be to try and bring your personal interests into your work, whether it be literature, politics or math. Following whats going at the moment in your decided field(s) is also a definite plus. I think admission committees across the board are always impressed by a student engaged with their field of interest as opposed to students who’ve only done what’s required of them in the classroom.

SAIC and SMFA give the most money to international students out of any of those mentioned here but they also have some of the ‘worst’ design programs. RISD does award a couple of non renewable trustee scholarships (each around 10k) to enrolled students irrespective of nationality but not to incoming students. Generally speaking though, you would be better off with with either parsons or RISD if your intended major is fashion or illustration.

I don’t think it’s that easy to double major at either RISD or Parson’s. RISD has the super selective dual degree program with brown (which requires you to be accepted to both risd and brown) while Parson’s lets students fill out their humanities requirements at other colleges (namely Eugene Lang) but, to the best of my knowledge, neither offers traditional, pre-packaged double major programs so to speak. Both schools have quite structured curricula which don’t encourage much interdepartmental study. This doesn’t mean that you won’t be able to study across different departments at either school, just that it will be a bit more complicated.

If financial aid isn’t that necessary, you might also want to consider studying in the UK. Studying in the UK, even in london, is generally cheaper than the US for internationals, though the system is a little bit different. Central St Martin’s seems like it’d be right up your alley.

Hope this is of some use.

I wrote it in somewhere else. fashion-fashion I didn’t see but illustration and fashion-able other stuff a ton. very commercial, employable, highly skilled, bit boring, but why not??

-Art Center awards scholarships to students who demonstrate both financial need and outstanding visual and academic ability. International students do not need to establish financial need. Amounts may be up to full tuition based on calculated need, available funds and the recommendation of the Scholarship Committee. Both new and currently enrolled students may apply for Art Center scholarships.

Generally, a scholarship is renewed each term if a student maintains a GPA of 3.00, continues to demonstrate financial need and is making satisfactory progress as defined by the Financial Aid Office. Although Art Center administers a number of named scholarships, to be considered, students need only apply for general scholarships. Students holding scholarships must complete a Leave of Absence when they take a term off, and may not take off three consecutive terms.

Oh RISD does let you double major. It just takes five years. My bad

Update:
I applied to RISD for ED, SVA and Pratt for EA, and MICA for regular.

I got into SVA, Pratt and MICA, but rejected by RISD.
I think I would want Togo to MICA.
