I grew up in a family of six: my parents, an older brother and sister, and a younger brother. For as long as I can remember, my parents always speak to us about the importance of an education and the myriad of opportunities it provides. My parents are both from poor families and did not have the opportunity to advance beyond high school. Despite this, they work hard to provide the best for us. They do so because they want us to have the best education there is so that we can make a better life for ourselves and also contribute in a positive way towards society.
Seeing how hard my parents work and how much they sacrifice, have motivated me to strive for excellence. Throughout my years in school I have aspired to thrive in my academics. Reflecting on my familys financial situation, I know the only way to a better life is through education. My older siblings did not care about their education and now they are struggling to find jobs without a college education. I refuse to follow in their footsteps, for I know I have the ability to shape my own destiny.
In 2008, my family and I migrated to the United States from Jamaica. We came here, like most immigrants, in pursuit of the American Dream. Upon arrival in the United States, we did not have the support of relatives and were left to fend for ourselves. The first few months were extremely difficult for us. We managed to get an apartment but we did not have any furniture, so we had to sleep on the floor. Food was also scarce, and there are many times when I would give up my meal so that my younger brother did not have to go to bed hungry with the little food that we had. Many times I offered to get a job to help support my family but my parents insisted that it was their responsibility to take care of us and that I should focus on my studies.
I want to pursue a degree in biological sciences. Science has always been my favorite subject, with biology piquing my interest the most. Ever since my first biology class sophomore year, I knew it was the science I truly wanted to study, since it would enable me to directly impact the lives of others. With such a degree I hope to pursue a career as a medical doctor, more specifically a pediatrician. My ultimate goal is to become a member of Doctors without Borders to aid the underprivileged population around the world to get proper medical care. My interest in philanthropic work was sparked by my parents, who though do not possess much, still try to help those less fortunate than we are. I desire to emulate my parents selflessness.
Please be harsh....I know its not the best but i'm really stressed out and I cant seem to think of anything else to write.
