Croft Institute

I am considering applying to Ole Miss as a safety because of the Croft Institute. (I want to study IR, but IS with a concentration in politics is also fine). I'm wondering how rigorous the institute really is (I'm very passionate about politics and enjoy an intellectual atmosphere, something I would not associate with Ole Miss). I've heard its much better than the rest of the university, but wanted some more opinions. Also, how difficult is it to get into the institute? I'm one of the top students in my class, african american and I'm hoping for around a 34 ACT. my top choices are Georgetown and Barnard, I'm just wondering if it will be challenging and if its a safety (croft not Ole Miss in general)

If you can give us a few details about yourself, we might be able to take a better stab at your question.

what info specifically?

I guess I’m asking for the basics. Are you instate or OOS? GPA? When will you take the ACT? Do you think you are a NMF? IMHO, The Croft Institute (as well as the honors college) should not be considered safeties. And you certainly don’t want to come across as such.

Having said that, very accomplished students with very high test score are a given. (Your goal of a 34 is not the exeception to the rule). Challenge is not an issue. The small class sizes and very invested professors make Croft intellectually stimulating.

I suggest a visit, if you can. Please feel free to ask more questions. Hotty Toddy!

I live overseas (Australia) so OOS haha and we don’t have GPAs in Australia. Mostly A’s though. Are the Honours college and croft equally as difficult to get into?

Wow, that is OOS! The honors college accepts about 300 of the 1000+ applicants each year. I believe the average ACT is a bit over 30. They also heavily weight the quality of the essay in the selection process. Croft only accepts a few over 40 into the program each year. It is very competitive and the scores for accepted students are higher.

You should take the time to contact the department directly. Maybe via email? The Croft Institute paired with the Honors College would be an excellent experience for you. If you ended up with a 32+ ACT score, you would have the OOS cost covered through scholarships. You would also likely be competitive for additional scholarships from either the Honors College or the Croft Institute. Both programs are challenging and provide opportunities for travel abroad and extensive research in your area of choice. Here are email addresses for folks associated with the program:
