Cross Commissioning

Has anyone’s son/daughter applied to cross commission? My son, Class of 2007, wants to cross commission in the Marine Corps upon graduation. He has recently been accepted to the USMC Officer Candidate School at Quantico. He’s taking part in OCS as part of his USAFA summer program. I’m just wondering how different and difficult this is to accomplish. He’s got his heart set upon it and feels that acceptance into the summer OCS almost gives him a guarantee of a cross commission. Any input on this?

This crosscomissioning things is new to me... i think ive heard of it before but the details are sketchy. I too would like to know about it too (not as something id want to do, just to know).

Friend and roomate went into the marines after graduation many moons ago. He had been very impressed by an exchange officer. He stayed in just 5 years and got out. After being out, he admitted that going to USAFA and being with people who could not relate was a negative. He is proud of time as a marine, but would not do it over. He is now a patent lawyer.

Our nephew cross-commissioned to the Air Force after attending the Naval Academy (father is retired AF Col., uncle (my husband) is retired AF Lt Col and B-IB pilot -- nephew wanted to fly AF bombers too, ended up in C-17). As for how hard it is, I don't recall it being too difficult for our nephew, though he still roots for Navy!

Okay, I just asked my husband and he says the Marine Corp would have to give a stamp of approval first and then your son would need to find a sponsor at AFA to sign his package, etc. He says it shouldn't be too difficult at all if all parties are in agreement. Hope this helps a little.

While I don't think Bulldog training guarantees being able to cross-commission, I've heard that it's something a cadet needs to do in order to be considered for it (or at the very least gives them a significant advantage over someone who didn't do it).

It doesn't look very promising.

Post subject: The final word on cross commissions

5 cadets going to the AF
1 cadet going Navy
3 cadets staying Army
Cross commission program suspended indefinitely

UNcynical is correct. In order to be considered to cross commission to the Marine Corps you are required to attend Bulldog (a mini OCS course). andyJ...the post you mentioned pertains to Westpoint cadets. It is not easy to cross commission (legacy of the service one desires to crosscommission to sometimes helps). But if for whatever reason one doesn't have the opportunity to crosscommission, he/she can apply for an interservice transfer.

There is at least one person cross-commissioning to the Marines from my class.
