…is it crazy to want to go into the Air Force Academy and yet be thinking about maybe going into a different branch from the Academy, other than the Air Force?

Details? What do you want to do?

Pragmatically? Yes. Only a very small (read 2-5) number of grads will switch branches each year. You'd be better off choosing an academy based on your long term interest.

I don't have anything particular in mind. Just keeping my options open.

I think academies do exchange programs for a semester (of 4th year?) to those who want to see what the other academies are like.

They do. And you can cross-commision out of any academy if you want most of the time. They don't tell you tahat though.

But be prepared to get hugely ripped on if you go to a different Academy. The "other Academy" cadets catch a lot of heat during the week of an inter-Academy football game.

Shines-

It is not easy to cross-commission. There are only a few each year based on a one-for-one.

it is very difficult to switch.....at Summer SEminar (Naval), a firstie was telling us it was very difficult. SHe was switching to USAFA.

she told us it is nearly impossible unless you have family in the other branch, she had a bro @ AFA

Well, at any rate, you can. I was under the impression that you couldn't at all when I got here.
