CS at Purdue

My son just got admitted to CS at Purdue. Looking for any inputs about the program. Also any reviews about which LLCs should he look for? Is housing guaranteed at Purdue?

CS is an extremely strong program at Purdue, and one of the most difficult admits so congrats to your son!

I believe housing is guaranteed for freshman if you put in a deposit and housing contract by April 15th. There is tons of close in, off campus, housing available too for upperclassmen (and most choose to live off campus).

There are a bunch of LLCs and I recommend for helping a big school feel a bit smaller. Data Mine is popular with CS majors.

They opened up admitted student day for March 24.
@momofboiler1 I have a couple questions.
coming in from Indianapolis airport, any suggestions for overnight stay near campus? Can we take the rainbow shuttle from the airport or having a car is better?

There are two hotels at the bottom of the Chauncey Hill Hampton Inn and Hilton Garden Inn, and then the Union Hotel on campus. All wouldn’t require a car.

My daughter is a current CS Freshman and is quite happy so far.

Check the economics of multiple shuttle round trips vs. a single rental car - I haven’t priced either in a while.

A car would open up all of the hotels in Lafayette. I’ve stayed at most of the Marriott and Hilton properties (CS daughter is my 2nd at Purdue) and I’d just select whichever is cheapest, other than the Four Points.

A car would also open up the chance to explore the area, get off campus for food, etc. If you’re traveling to campus, I’d make a weekend of it and explore, rather than just the one day.

Housing is guaranteed for Freshmen and continuing students, as long as you meet the deadlines. Once you’re off campus, getting back on would be challenging.

Thanks @momofboiler1 and @RichInPitt
Just booked the trip. Son is excited
@RichInPitt how is your daughter finding CS at Purdue? Is she living in any LLC? My son is not in honors. Wondering if he can still choose LLC.

My daughter is in the Honors College, which is effectively an LC, so she couldn’t join any others of interest.

My older daughter was in both Women in Engineering and what was the the Study Abroad (Global Engineering…something) LC at the time. Both were very useful. I would certainly recommend joining one if aligns with interests and goals.

Being in HC isn’t required for an LC - mostly the opposite in many cases.

She seems to be enjoying the program, though she’s generally pretty quiet about everything.
