CS in Revelle

This is my first post on CC.
I just got into Revelle College of UCSD as an undeclared major.
I just wanted to ask if I will be able to choose a CS major at a later time.

I have the same question. My daughter was admitted into Revelle undeclared although she wanted Bioengineering or Comp Sci or something! How easy it is to declare an engineering major - does this mean she isn’t in the Jacobs school at all?
So confused…

I’m confused for the exact same reason! I got into Warren as an undeclared major, yet I know a 100% that I want to study explicitly Computer Science/Computer Engineering, could minor in something else, but yeah, what does it mean that I’m undeclared, can I still go Comp Sci?

Undeclared just means as of right now you don’t have a major. When you are finally a student at UCSD, you can declare whatever major you want as long as it is not an impacted major. Unfortunately, starting from fall 2013, computer science and computer engineering are both impacted. This means after attending UCSD, you have to go through another review process before they can admit you into the major.

@mom2kids: Both of those majors you mentioned are impacted. However, as long as it is not an impacted major, changing your major is as simple as a few clicks. And your daughter is in Revelle college. Think of Jacobs school of engineering as just the engineering department. If your D chooses a major within in jacobs school of engineering, I guess you can say that she is in Jacobs school.

List of impacted majors: [Impacted Majors](Capped Majors)

@DistressStudent - Thanks! If she wants an impacted major, is it pointless to go to UCSD? Can she still try for one? Can she take classes in an impacted departement even if she’s not enrolled in that major? Can one design their own major?

Any thoughts on the reality of the impacted classes/majors is helpful.

I am not sure how rigorous it would be to get into CS, but I heard to get into bioengineering you need pretty good stats once you are at SD ( Can’t exactly say how well though. I knew a couple of people who were able to declare bioengi after their first year). For bio-E, I looked at the schedule of classes just now and there are quite a few classes that you need to be in the major to take. However, I think those are only upper-div. I think if your daughter is interested in Bio-E, there are some lower div classes she can take.

And actually, I believe revelle allow their students to make their own majors: [Revelle College: Academic Information, Guidelines for Indidvidual Majors](http://revelle.ucsd.edu/academics/acad-info/major.html)

For me, I got into UCSD also as an undeclared. I wanted to do biology, but it was impacted. So I declared chemistry instead. For most of their lower div classes, biology and chemistry were nearly identical (except chemistry is a hard sci so I took math + phys meant for engineers). I sent in my request and application to get into the biology department last quarter (I am a 2nd year) and I got in. Overall, I managed to only take one extra class and was able to transition from chemistry to biology pretty smoothly.

Thanks for your answers @DistressStudent, however for me it’s a bit different as I’m into Comp Sci and there aren’t really any non-impacted majors which are close to it.

Say i would take my chances and go to UCSD regardless, what would happen if I don’t get into Comp Sci there? Will I still be able to take Comp Sci courses?

@Anton164 I talked to a CSE representative at UCSD. They said that first we’d have to complete the lower division MATH and CS courses. Then we’d have to submit an application to major in CS.
We will be able to pursue a CS major based on this application. I still don’t know what would be on this application though.

If you are an undeclared and you want to get into an impacted major, you should have a backup plan. Students I know that don’t get into their major either choose an alternate non-impacted major or transfer to another school. Computer Science has just became an impacted major so it is hard to tell what it takes to get in.

@busymei I do know that the minimum GPA required for being a CS major is 3.7
I just hope it I somehow make it or else I will have to transfer.

My son is a sophomore at Revelle and he just switched his major from Poly Sci to Computer Science - he said it was very easy. Of course, if they’re saying the program is becoming impacted, they might want some pre-reqs completed first, but I wouldn’t think it’s a deal-breaker for you. Good luck! My son loves it at UCSD. :)

@coquimom That sounds reassuring. But we won’t be getting in just by filling in some pre-reqs, I guess, because we would be ranked according to our GPA.
I still think it would be worthwhile to enroll in UCSD.

Hi there just thought is let you know that it is possible at revelle college. I got accepted to revelle college at UCSD as a computer science major for 2013. Are you a transfer? Did you specify your major when transferring ?

@Lilimuth Wow. Congrats. Can you post your stats?

@Lilimuth I am a freshman. I did specify my major as far as I remember. However, I think my application was rather weak. Especially the essays and extracurriculars.
