I'm a freshman for UCSD. From the four year plan, I notice that I need to choose CSE 11 for the fall quarter. Can anyone tell me what is it about? What prerequisite do I need? If I just took some introduction classes about C language in high school, will it be hard for me to learn CSE 11? Thank you.

Are you a CS major? It is my understanding that incoming CS majors can take either CSE 11 or CSE 8A/8AL their first quarter.

Also, have you taken the CS placement exam? You need to take it before enrolling in your first CS class, although I think it has a bug in it that automatically places most students in CSE3 unless they’ve gotten a 5 on the AP Computer Science exam. Here’s the link to the placement exam: [test1 - created by phpFormGenerator](test1 - created by phpFormGenerator).

yeah I was wondering if there was something wrong with the placement exam, I took it and I thought I got most of them right, but I was recommended for CSE 3.
Has anyone taken CSE 11 without AP computer science credit?

This is a silly thin with our CSE department.

You will always get CSE 3, but honestly, it’s a silly class. It’s known at UCSD as the “I need an A” class.

I took CSE 11 without having took AP CompSci and it was a lot of work. it was work for everyone; it’s a pretty tough transition from high school into college life. You’re in the lab for 8-10 hours a week working on a single program.

That said, if you’re committed to it and like programming, take CSE 11. I do, however, recommend CSE 8A for all CSE majors first if you don’t have much experience programming.

I took CSE11, and if I remember correctly I petitioned in without taking the placement exam. I had little to no prior programming experience, but did well.

I would however recommend CSE8A/B if you don’t have experience with java. I have heard it is much easier, so you’ll likely get a much better grade. The pacing in CSE11 is pretty hectic, and although it usually didn’t take me long to finish the programs, learning the syntax on the fly was a bit of a hassle (whereas a gentle introduction will probably allow you to master the syntax gradually and apply it). So certainly consider the fact that you may not learn as well in CSE11 if you have to spend a lot of effort learning the syntax at the same time as building your program (unless you are good at that sort of thing).

I think the only real reason to take CSE11 is if you already have a lot of experience program beforehand, or if you don’t have room to take both CSE8 courses. Taking CSE8 will probably give you a much more solid foundation.

I went the CSE8A/B route, and am very glad I made that decision. I didn’t have any java programming experience and CSE8A/B was just right for me. It still was a lot of work imo because there is a program due every week. You have to keep up because programming assignments build on the previous one (in most cases). I spent many hours in the lab. As long as you keep up, you can get a good grade.

I also took 8A/B and I thought it built a very strong foundation. It was by no means easy for me, since I’d never taken any programming class before, but I did get an A in both. In 8A, we had partnered programming assignments, which was very useful because it was hard to figure out the actual syntax. I’d say if you have little to no experience, take 8A/B. I had Ord for those classes and he is a really good teacher who makes you like programming a lot. And don’t worry about being a quarter behind-if you take 4 classes a quarter you should be fine. Good luck!

My major is bioinformatics. In my course recommendation, my counsellor recommended me to take CSE 11.

Thank you guys! After hearing what you said, I think I should take CSE 8A instead of CSE 11.

out of curiosity, did you take the AP computer science exam?

No, I haven’t. I took the placement test yesterday. I thought that most questions I answered are correct, but the result was that they recommended me to go to CSE 3! I think there is something wrong about it.

Wow this makes me feel so much better. I just took the exam and it recommended I take CSE 3. I took a C++ class in college(equiv to MAE 9) and aced it (I’m a transfer). I was 99% sure I got all the questions on the test right so it made me feel like a complete dumbass. lol Good to hear it does that to almost everyone though. Think I should be ok in CSE 11?
