Am I correct in understanding that changes/updates to the Profile need to be done by calling each college/univ.? I was told you can't update it like you are able to make changes to the FAFSA. We submitted, but our income is different by about $1500. Some of that was self employment, which also meant our tax burden changed. On the FAFSA that led to a lower EFC by only $100. Do I need to let colleges know of this slight change for the Profile or is it too small a difference to worry about? Thanks in advance for any help!

Unfortunately, you are correct. One of the drawbacks of the CSS Profile is that there is no way to update it or change it once you’ve submitted it. You DO have to contact each individual school. It’s a pain.

However, if you’re willing to live with the slight difference in income reported, and the even slighter difference in EFC, then it’s definitely reasonable to leave things as they are and not report any changes. Unless the $1500 difference is a substantial percentage of total income already reported, I wouldn’t bother changing a thing.

When my oldest was applying to colleges, I filled out “his” CSS Profile in October of his senior year of high school, long before W2’s came out. After taxes were done, several months later, I discovered I was a little off on the Profile. The bottom line (EFC) was consequenlty a (very) little off. I thought, “Well, that’s close enough. Afterall, they ask you to estimate if you have to,” and I left it at that. From the 6 colleges that took our CSS Profile, I never heard a thing about it.

Thank you Simple Life. That helps a bit. I figured the slight difference really doesn’t change much where aid is concerned. It was funny to see that although income went up slightly, the EFC came DOWN slightly.
