CSU to CC gpa reset

I went to Sonoma State for a year got bad grades and now I’m at a community college. Do my grades or just my credits transfer over because I’ve read numerous times that when you transfer to a different college your gpa resets back to 0.0. And if not is it possible to disregard the bad grades? I want to transfer back to another CSU now.

I believe you start at 0 at a community college, but when you are trying to apply for transfer you have to include previous grades from other institutions.

@juice650‌ So they will look at my community college grades not my ssu grades but just take the credits, correct?

They’ll look at all of your grades. Your GPA doesn’t really ‘reset.’ Once you transfer you just have multiple GPAs and an overall cumulative GPA. If you transfer to a new school, they’re going to start a new GPA for you based only on the courses that you have taken at that school. But your old transcripts are still going to be there.

@comfortablycurt‌ do they value the gpa of your currently enrolled schools gpa more than your pervious school gpa?

They will look at your whole academic record and calculate your GPA across both campuses.

Do not attempt to hide your Sonoma State grades, you will be clobbered.

When I apply in the fall would they average the 2 gpa’s or would they primary look at the community college gpa?

They will do it unit by unit across both campuses. so - 15 Sonoma units with a 1.75 and 45 CC units at 3.0 would give you about 2.7. Make sense?

@NCalRent‌ are you just adding the two gpa’s dividing by 2 because when I did that I got 2.375? This would be really helpful so I can know see what grades I would need to get.

You have to add the credits that you got for each unit and divide by the number of units that you took. It will be higher than 2.3 because you have only 15 bad units.

Every credit you took gets equal weight. A 4 unit lab science is worth more than a 1 unit PE class - no matter where you took it. To make the math really simple, look at each semester’s transcript, A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1 and F=0. At most colleges +/- is worth .25 - so a B+=3.25.
Multiply the points for each grade you earned by the number of credits/units for that class. Add all the grade points you’ve earned and divide them by the units/credits attempted.

Class 1 4 units C = 8
Class 2 3 units B = 9
Class 3 1 unit A = 12
Class 4 3 unit C+ = 6.75
Class 5 3 unit A- = 11.25
Class 5 3 unit D+ = 5.25
Total grade points earned = 52.25
units attempted 17

52.25/17 = 3.07

For a whole transcript, you’ll want to use a spreadsheet.

Make sense?

Try using an online gpa calculator. Here’s the link to one.
