I am a freshman at a csu and I am starting my first semester, however, I would prefer to be attending a uc. Is it possible to drop out in my 2nd semester, go to a cc, then apply to a uc? How much longer would I be at a community college since I am spending a semester at a csu? I know not all csu credits transfer but would it be possible for my eng 115 class to transfer over? I am currently undeclared. If you guys could please answer my questions, give advice, or if you’ve been in this situation and were able to successfully transfer to a uc please share your experiences.
You need 60 semester or 90 quarter units to transfer to a UC. Depending upon how many of your CSU credits are UC transferable, expect to stay minimum 1 1/2 to 2 years at a CC to get all the classes needed for transfer. You can use assist.org to figure out which CSU classes are transferable. You might want to post in the Transfer thread under UC transfers. Many knowledgeable posters that can help you. Personally, I would just start at the CCC directly and not attend the CSU if your ultimate goal is to transfer.
I don’t know you or your interests and capabilities so, it is difficult to give you really personalized advice. Most people I’ve talked to that disparage all CSUs and pine for a UC - any UC don’t know what they are talking about. Most of the CSUs graduate well qualified engineers who go on to rewarding and successful careers.
I’d say, it depends a bit on which CSU you attend now but, by and large it will be quickest if you stay the course, get your degree where you are.
Most CSUs start classes this week. Attend the school for a couple of semesters before you decide you hate it. If 12 months from now, you are still bent on transferring - apply and see what happens. To get into UCD/UCSB/UCI, with an engineering major, you’ll need about a 3.5 GPA and the right courses - coming from a CSU, CC or another UC.
Maybe you are capable of that, maybe not… If the transfer doesn’t work out, you’ll still be well on your way to a very credible degree.
Good luck.
