So I was checking on CTools to look for textbooks I would need for class because an upperclassmen told me to do so. Then I came across "New Student Essay & Questions" tab on the top of the screen where your other classes are also listed. I never knew or was notified through email or orientation that we would have an essay due September 1st at 5PM on "Mind vs Machine".

Could this be the essay that Honors students are exempt from writing?

Someone help me out and explain if I need to do this essay because I am in Honors.

I believe honors students are exempt.

I’m pretty sure honors are exempt.

^Yes, I know for a fact that they are. I also know that Kinesiology and Engineering students are exempt. I don’t know about Ross preferred-admits, music students, or students in other colleges.

I was a pre-admit and had to write it. Don’t give it much importance though (if this is the essay I’m thinking about). Your counselor has a brief read over it and doesn’t say much to you about it. I know people who didn’t even do it or turned it crappy essays and it didn’t make a difference

^ I don’t think this is the essay the OP was referring to.

The essay consisted of two parts: the essay and a ten question survey. Our answers to the ten questions were viewed by our academic advisors to determine placement (to an extent). And our essays will be first read by our english teachers freshman year.

So was Mind vs Machine the placement test required before going to orientation or what? haha

Are you in LSA honors, Engineering, or Kinesiology? Then no.

LSA Honors, so I guess this is the Writing Placement test. Case closed?

Yes, case closed. lol :)

Sorry for re-opening the case, but what if you are an engineering student who will be taking English freshman year? Is the essay still exempt?

Yes. No engineering students have to do it.

This essay was due “5 business days before the start of your orientation.” Your academic advisor was supposed to look at the responses to the survey portion in order to determine your placement. Consequently, your class selections (which happen during orientation) will have no effect on the the completion of your essay. If anything, it should have been the other way around. Moreover, a couple of engineering friends, who I know signed up for english, remained exempt from the essay.

You’re fine. :)

Hi ! I am an LSA Comprehensive studies program and I just have been made aware of the writing placement essay ! Can I still write it ? Would it be a big problem if I do not ?

Yes, I believe you can still write it. I’m going to quote one of my orientation leaders here: “if you didn’t upload your essay five business days prior to your orientation, make sure you upload it as soon as possible afterwards, because chances are your teacher won’t read them until after the start of fall term.” As you can see, no date was specified as the deadline for those twriting it after the orientation, so I think you will be fine.

I cannot report on the consequences, as I am an incoming freshman myself; I suggest you ask one of the upperclassmen. But honestly, I would just write it and get it over with if I were you.

By the way I am an international student so I m not familiar at all with this king of english reading/writing thing IN ENGLISH and I will meet my advisor tomorow at 9 am. I do not think i have the time to read a 18 pages article and write a 5 pages essay for tomorow…I think i will just explain to my advisor my situation. Are they understanding or will he yell at meor something ? (I was used to it in my high school…)

My advisor was very friendly. I don’t see anyone yelling at you. :)
