I was wondering which of these two is better-
CTY program at Johns Hopkins
or
Summer Challenge Program at Boston?

CTY seems more selective.
Has anyone been to any of these two programs?

I've been to CTY for 5 years... If you have any specific questions, I'm willing to give my two cents :)

09xoxo, thanks, I have some questiosn.
I'm planning to go on only one camp this summer, so I have to be really picky here =)
Is CTY really worth it? Would you recommend it as the 'only camp' for me to apply this summer?
The program seems a little expensive too. Will I be able to learn a lot?

i LOVEEEEE cty. yes yes definitely go. what grade are you in? i went for four years, from sixth (going on seventh) to ninth grade. yeah, it is expensive, but they have scholarships and financial aid and you do learn a lot. i still talk to my friends from the first cty five years ago, so you will meet lotsa awesome people. which site are you planning on attending?

It really depends on which course you take... There are some courses that will not help you much in school and are generally for experience and entertainment. Other courses can get you out of a year-long course at school. The biggest thing about CTY is the experience of living away from home, as well as the social aspects. It's an amazing experience and definately fulfilling for a summer (if you make friends who live near you and they're home, you hang out all the time) but not neccessarily the best thing for your application.

i agree with xoxo. the experience and the social aspect are definitely what cty is ultimately about. if you're just looking for a purely academic environment or something that'll "look good", it may not be the best choice. i absolutely loved cty for all four years i went, primarily because i loved the courses and the people. feel free to pm me if you have any more questions regarding cty or the experience itself.

CTY changed my life. I've never heard of the Summer Challenge Program (and I'm from Boston), but I bet it could never hold a candle to CTY. It is an amazing place filled with amazing people. I learned so much academically and otherwise during my years there. I would recommend applying as soon as possible though - most of the courses are full or filling up. You can find an open course list on the cty website.
Go to CTY - you will never regret it.

I went to CTY a couple of times. How old are you? If your a sophmore dont go since its is directed toward a younger audience (7th,8th,9th). If your a soph look into other programs which it seems like your doing.

yeah i'm a soph.

My younger sister (going to 7th ) is interested in Johns Hopkins' Talent Search Program though.
Is Talent Search good?

I went to CTY twice and it was just as amazing as everyone said. But it's true, it's more geared toward younger kids, and most (not all) of the 14+ kids are repeater students.

I'm not sure what you mean by the Talent Search Program. There's a talent search test thing you have to take to qualify to get into CTY. Is that what you're talking about?

Yeah I'm pretty sure that's what she's talking about... the Talent Search is mainly for younger people who want to qualify for distance ed or the summer programs, however since you've already taken sat/act/psat, you don't need to do the talent search. What it does islet you take the test, then compare you with other people who did. The top scorers (usually perfect papers btw) get scholarships for one course at a local college and awards or whatnot, otherwise, it's just taking the test.

Why are all of the CTY s red?

haha mine isn't ^>^

oh wait... it's because I did a search on CTY. haha ^.^ never mind

CTY is quite selective and also very popular. Kids tend to return for at least a couple of years, although I've heard that by age 16, they often go elsewhere. It's rather late to be applying for CTY - many of the most popular classes are filled. I've not heard of Summer Challenge either, but that doesn't necessarily mean much.

Some quick thoughts - now that I've found the Summer Challenge Program website. It looks like a solid college campus program - and very like many others, some even in the Boston area. Are you looking at the 2 week program or the 6 week program? CTY generally requires SAT scores, by the way, so if you haven't taken the SATs yet, you are out of luck for this summer.

CTY, definitely. My DD loved it. She started after 9th grade, so she was an "old" starter, and went for two years. She would go back again this year but she turns 17 in June, just before CTY starts for the summer. Very fun and the courses are interesting and intense.
