Cum Laude?

Noob question but how does one get on the Dean's List? What GPA do you need to get on that list? (Is it possible to get on that list if you screwed up your freshman year?)

Also, what GPA do you need for Magnum Cum Laude, Cum Laude, etc..? Does this really help you get into a better graduate program?

Dean’s list is an honor’s list that comes out every semester, or quarter depending on the school. In order to make the deans list your cumulative gpa at the end of the semester or quarter must be 3.5 or higher. Some schools also do what is called the “president’s list” which is your gpa must be 3.75, I believe, cumulative or higher. You can make the dean’s list every semester or quarter. If you get a 3.3 the first semester, and get a 3.5 the next semester than the 2nd semester you would be on the dean’s list.

Latin honors are given to you based on your cumulative gpa when you graduate.

I was looking this up on Wikipedia since it seems Magna Cum Laude, Summa Cum Laude, etc. can vary by school and found this:

Glad I transferred out before I got Hysterical Praise from Fordham.

^LOL. Where do you go now?

EDIT: OH wait, Columbia right? What’s your major? How hard was it to get into Columbia? Just curious.

Here is the exact wording from my school:

The President’s list and the Dean’s list are announced after each semester. These lists apply only to undergraduate students not under academic or disciplinary probation. The President’s list includes the names of all students who, for the semester in question, (1) were enrolled in at least nine credit hours of courses awarding letter grades, and (2) earned a grade point average of 4.0. The Dean’s list includes the names of all students who, for the semester in question, (1) were enrolled in at least nine credit hours of courses awarding letter grades, and (2) earned a grade point average of at least 3.5 (but less than 4.0). Please note that learning support courses are not included in the above calculations.

As far as the Cum Laude awards, you need to take at least 60 credit hours at the school and have the following GPA: 3.5 for Cum Laude, 3.75 for Magna Cum Laude and a 3.9 for Summa Cum Laude.

If you’d listen to Rush and crew yammer on about Sotomayor, you’d know that graduating Summa Cum Laude isn’t very impressive
