i was hoping someone could describe the differences between cumulative gpa and year's gpa, including how colleges view each one compared to each other.

A year's GPA is for any particular high school year and cumulative GPA is the total one for all high school years completed. Colleges tend to rely on cumulative GPA but also look at trends such as have you shown improvement from one year to the next. Some do not consider freshman year grades and most also look at difficulty of courses taken over the years. Some do not rely on GPA but instead on class rank.

Most consider freshman grades, some don't. Don't know all that do not, but UCs are among those that do not use freshman grades to determine your high school GPA.
