CUNY transfers-Spring 2018

Hello, I’m currently a student who finished my first year at St. Johns University. However, I no longer want to attend there and I want to transfer to a cuny in Spring 2018. Recently, I spoke to college advisor telling her I wanted to transfer, so as of now I’m no longer a student at SJU. There are four cunys that I’m applying to which are Baruch, Hunter, Queens and Lehman ( listed in order of preference). My main concern is about the application process. I checked online and it says that first I would need to submit the online application, then pay the application fee, print the application summary package and last submit the supporting documents.

I’m confused. For the cunys I listed, do I need to submit a transfer essay? And if so, where do I do it? Do I do it in the online application or do I include it with the supporting documents? And what kind of essay are they looking for specifically? Is it just an essay explaining my reasons for wanting to transfer and the classes I previously took at SJU?

Also, I know that cunys require that transfer students send their high school transcript. I went to public high school from 2012-2016. Would I need to contact my advisor from hs and ask for it?

If anyone can offer any advice or solutions to my current situation, it would be greatly appreciated.

Hey,
I am applying to Baruch, CCNY, Hunter, and BC, for Spring 2018 too.
I go to a CC in Washington, I have an UW 3.97 GPA (33 semester credits) and a 2.5 HS GPA.
I’m still waiting for grades on my summer quarter in late August to submit my app.

Asking your HS directly is probably the best option. The admins will have likely dealt with transfer students before and would surely be happy to just send the transcripts directly to CUNY.
The essay is just seems to be a regular personal statement, but it does not include any parameters so idk. The website gives directions on how to send the personal statement: “When sending supplemental materials to CUNY/UAPC, please attach to the Document Return Receipt Form included in your Application Summary Package”, that might help if you haven’t seen the CUNY transfer worksheet already.

I’m a little nervous about my application, hopefully we both get in to our top picks.

Thanks for your input! I feel so relieved hearing from someone who’s on the same page as me.
With what you told me, I wouldn’t worry so much. You have a high gpa so I think you have a really good chance for getting in those colleges!

Is it mandatory to do the writing? Because according to the CUNY website essays and recommendations are for freshmen, but not for transfers…

I just submitted my online transfer app yesterday and I didn’t get any notifications or anything about doing an essay so I’m assuming it’s not mandatory.

I applied and was accepted as a transfer at Hunter for this fall and there was no essay required. The only essay I did was for a transfer achievement scholarship after I was accepted. I assume this is how it is with all of the schools as they use the same application. I hope this helps

Mhm this definitely helped! Thanks a lot!

@catdogs: Was your college transcript submitted in an envelope and did you include your document return receipt in it?

Were you able to contact your high school advisor to send in your transcript? Now that it’s summer vacation, I’m pretty sure the counselors at my school are on vacation and I’m worried about them not sending my transcript on time. I don’t know what to do.

I haven’t contacted my hs advisor yet. I’m planning on sending my college transcript first.

If you think the counselors at your school are on vacation, you could try emailing them. And if they don’t respond soon, then my best bet would be just to call your school.

Sorry if my advice wasn’t that helpful :frowning: but when I get up to sending my hs transcript, I’ll definitely update you

@Fugglesushi2 I didn’t send my transcripts myself I ordered them through a service for my last school and they were mailed from there for me. I’m not sure what a document return receipt is, so I don’t think I ever used one of those.

@Kathrain Did you manage to get ahold of someone? Even if it’s not the exact advisor you had in high school, your guidance office or just the high school office itself should be able to send out your transcripts for you. There should be someone in at least one of these offices even if it is summer, but their office hours might be different. I know some high schools also have an online service you can use to send your transcripts through, so check into that if you haven’t! I hope this helped

@catdogs Not yet and my high school will be closed until August 28 :frowning:

@catdogs How long did it take for your cuny application status to be updated? My college transcript was sent Aug 1 but when I checked online, it still says “We require a transcript”

@Fugglesushi2 the entire process took a long time, but I’m not really sure on specifics. I applied around October of last year and was accepted in March of this year. I found the best way to actually find out your application status is to call Cuny’s automated system. It updates faster than the portal, and you can always email as well if you have a specific question. Even after I was accepted the portal still said my application was processing.

Alright thanks so much!

I haven’t started college yet, so I obviously don’t need to send my college transcript right? I’m starting my first semester at Queens and trying to transfer to Hunter in spring 2018.

Wait, isn’t the cuny transfer application for Spring 2018 due September 15? Hmm maybe you’re supposed to send your transcript from your previous college and then once your first semester at Queens college is done, then you send your transcript for that… I don’t really know :-S

Hello,
I’m also applying as a transfer. I reviewed some of the past discussions for Spring transfers and most of them say that the final decision is made mid October. Your portal will change (after u send all your docs) late September saying that a decision is made. You can call them that day and some admission people will ask for your SS # and tell you the decision and some won’t. But the final official decision via email is on mid October. I hope this helps and I wish us all acceptances

Guys, My app portal says that they have made a decision on my application. It states
“An admissions decision has been made by the college(s) listed on your application.
You will receive notification from only one college choice shortly.”
I think mine got processed early because I submitted everything very quickly the week it opened up.
I’ll update with my decision when it comes!
