For all of those who are currently at Dartmouth, how do students have fun on campus? There is a reputation for much drinking but how else does the non drinker have fun?

I can't even begin to tell you how FUN and AWESOME Dartmouth is.

It's not only beautiful here, but very active... the students are so diverse, social and passionate about individual interests... in my month here already I have learned so much about music, art, DJ'ing, irish folk dance, horse racing, etc... from my peers.

There is simply too much going on to "do it all" or "get bored" here... and of course, there is a nitch (or nitches) for everyone. We have a system called Blitzmail, which keeps everyone on campus in touch via email and bulletins... so you never get left out of the loop. News and happenings are relayed instantaneously.

It's hard to encapsulate life here, so here is a rough sampling... salsa dancing lessons, a million a cappella groups, frat dance parties, stand-up comedy, rock climbing, Friday Night Rock, ultimate frisbee/football/suntanning/having fun on the Green, radio station, biking/walking through the fall foliage, awesome speakers (Carol M. Braun and Madeline Albright have been here within the last week), debates, pregaming/impromtu room parties, concerts, etc... yes there is definitely lots going on, and classes (at least mine) are fascinating, challenging and worthwhile.

As per the frat scene... yes it is big but not overwhelming. I was a nondrinker all throughout high school, and now I drink occasionally and play pong at the frats. No one will pressure you to go drink, and you can go to the frats and not drink without pressure. There are plenty of alcohol-free options... and the frat dance parties are definitely hot not for the drink, but for the dance. Dartmouth students generally drink (and there are quite a few who party hard all the time), but it's an Ivy school... so all the students here are intelligent enough not to rely 100% on alcohol for a social life.

I hope you decide to apply if you are an 09... Dartmouth is honestly the best experience of my life and I am so happy here.

downindreams, you an 08 eh?

that would be correct.

You should come to Dartmouth if for no other reason than to meet drownindreams...I've only known her for a little over a month, but she is a really awesome person.

dartmouth is sweet. if you don't like to drink, theres a different band on campus every friday night (enon came a few weeks ago). also you can do pottery or something lame like that. just kidding, theres outdoor trips every weekend and a bus to boston. or you can just hang out with the cool people on your floor. if you do like to drink, ive heard you can do that too, like, alot. woo toga party tonight. anyway, i visited boston last weekend and the schools (harvard and MIT included) were not so exciting at all compared to dartmouth. like, quiet on a saturday night, people kind of doing their own thing, etc.... its much more communal here.

ps drownindreams is way lame

do you all know each other?

hey, what if i dont drink, and go to frat parties and just drink coke and chill? is that cool?

yeah theres some statistic floating around from a survey last year that says 74% of dartmouth students have 0-4 drinks on a friday/saturday night. so its not like everyone is getting trashed.

Thanks Xanatos. I should come to Z4 more often.

Frenkel, you go have quiet shut-up time now. =)

You can totally go to parties and not drink. I don't often see Cokes floating around, but people drink water, bring their own soda and often the frats have ginger ale/orange juice/etc which are used with alcohol but can be also drank straight. I went to a frat and a party last night and I didn't have any alcohol and I still had a great time. Although I lost my keys for a bit... hahaha yeah benedwodo, I found them booya!

You know my door's open for you ;)

I am now a junior member...go me...

how do you become a junior member

Posting enough to get it.

If you are non-drinker, and end up in the class of 2009, I would recommend applying to live in East Wheelock. They offer a ton of non-alcoholic activities.

Dartmouth is absolutely the sweetest, most fun place in the world. And I am an 06 and I still love it as much as I did my freshman fall.

That's kind of how I perceived it. A big frat scene, but not as rowdy as one might expect at, say, Arizona State or whevere. I can't imagine any Dartmoutj ladies on "Girls Gone Wild." ;-)

Girls gone wild? Maybe at tubestock...

Which was the best weekend of my Dartmouth career, hands down.

Dartmouth rocks my world.

at risk of sounding chauvenist and whatever other pejorative someone can tack on...how are the girls at dartmouth?

People at Dartmouth are good looking in general. ;)

They get a bad rep for some reason; I've never been able to figure that out. I think smart people are just intimidating!
