FalmaMom - Re: Party college rep. - there are a number of threads here about this reputation. Bottom line is, Lehigh is a hard school, the kids are very academic minded and serious about their grades and their futures. Is there partying, yes. There is a strong greek life at Lehigh and that includes parties. The percentage who go greek is 34% last i heard. That means that 2/3 of the students are not in greek life and party as their school work and other activities permit. There is also a active and growing substance free community at Lehigh called CHOICE.

Lehigh is a work hard, play hard school. For some that means drinking, but there are also lots of activities that do not involve alcohol. My son is a non drinker and has a very active social life.

Most of the kids I know attend parties on weekends, but generally most study and do homework during the week. The partying is confined to the “hill” for the most part - the area behind the dorms where the greek houses are.

I feel like some people who go online looking for info about Lehigh find stuff like that and half-expect to walk onto campus to see drunken, stumbling students :)

I would say Lehigh is no more of a party school than some other colleges. It’s a great time and I’ve been to some crazy parties, but I know that I have friends at schools that party about as much/as hard as we do. I’m not sugarcoating… the party scene is really pretty typical for a college school from what I’ve seen and heard.

Honestly, the fact that there is a social scene was part of the appeal to me – the balance between the TON of work you’ll have as a student (esp. IBE - I’ve put in ~15 hours this week already, outside of class) and the great times you’ll have with your friends. Lehigh is an amazing school, especially the IBE program that your son is interested in. I feel that there aren’t many places that can offer that AND a great social experience as well.

Eh, sort of. Delts had been under investigation for a while so it was really just a matter of time. Six frats in six years have been removed from Lehigh… but they were all similar to delts’ situation.

That being said, the LUPD has been cracking down on parties a bit harder than they had in the past. The administration is aware that the school has a party school reputation and they don’t like it.

Thank you for taking the time to respond, Copaman and momof2boyz (btw - I also have two boys, and… two girls).

We were quite impressed with Lehigh (what a gorgeous campus) and the Lehigh IBE program is still one of the options my son is considering. We’ve already visited several schools (UPenn, Columbia, MIT, Villanova) and are planning some other visits (Cornell, NYU, Princeton). Not an easy call… so many factors to take into account…

I was wondering about the three campuses…I’ve heard that athletic facilities are located on one of them and then bio sciences on the other. There are buses that can take you to and from each place…right? If you could give me some more details that would be great!

Asa Packer campus is the main campus, where the dorms are and most of the buildings you’ll need to go to as well.

Mountaintop campus is exactly where it sounds, on top of the mountain. The ChemE buildings are up there and there are buses to get there.

Goodman campus (athletic complex) is on the other side of the mountain, past Mountaintop. Athletes can catch buses over there at a few different times in the afternoon. For sporting events, I believe that students are bused over as well.

It’s not at all hard to get from one campus to the others - buses run fairly regularly. If you end up on an athletic team, odds are you will get rides from teammates that have cars on campus.

I’m not the best person to ask that question to :)

Both my best friend and I were paired with people who were nothing like us, whose habits we could not stand… not to mention, they rarely did laundry and therefore smelled etc…

EDIT: to tie in with that, my roommate did not party ONCE the entire year. Not even to a registered. He was really weird. He ended up telling people in the first few weeks that his roommate was a drunk/alcoholic, and it got back to me through people in his major. That really didn’t help me like him any more than I did.

I know a lot of people who were paired up well though, too. If you can find someone in the Lehigh 2015 facebook group who seems like a great match, I would go for that, honestly. Ask about their study/party/sleep habits and their hobbies, but keep in mind that those things change. Worst comes to worst, you’ll have great friends to go spend time with instead - remember, your roommate does not have to be your best friend, or your friend at all.

Lehigh will match you based on your room mate survey responses. Unfortunately, not everyone is honest on the survey and as Copaman has said, your habits can and do change in college. My son’s room mate and he were similar in their habits, but being in different majors they drifted apart - my son had to study for his major, while his room mate was a Sociology major and never studied, they each met friends in their major etc… They got along, but are not close.

It is kind of luck of the draw - I have heard great success stories and stories of total mis matches. I think the biggest thing is to approach it with an open mind and make the best of your situation.

Your close friends tend to be students you share a major with or participate in activities with - whether that is partying or clubs or whatever.

For meals, are they only the unlimited eating in the cafeterias or are there takeout options that meals can be used for? And each week could water and snacks be bought with meals?

In Rathbone and Lower UC, there’s all-you-can-eat style food, which is one meal swipe.

You can sign up for a takeout container that you can load up and then take out so that you can eat in your room. Choosing to do takeout also costs 1 swipe.

You can either choose to load up your takeout container, or sit down and eat as much as you’d like. You can’t do both though; even with the Unlimited meal plan, there’s a short lockout between swipes - about 20 minutes, I think.

You can buy water and snacks in bulk at Upper UC, but it’s not cost effective. You can only use swipes for them if you’ve got the 225 Block plan, as there’s no limit per week as to how many swipes you can use at Upper with the Block plan, unlike the other plans. Each “meal” swipe is like $4 equivalence and a case of water costs $40 or something ridiculous like that. You would be better off just walking down to Pantry 1 and buying the stuff there, and then walking it back. It’s really not too bad.

lehigh has such good programs for engineering and business, but i’m wondering what can you tell me about the quality of the arts & science area (history, poli sci, etc) - how do people in those majors feel about the enough support for them - profs, speakers, study abroad, research, etc

I can’t speak on the quality of the Arts & Sciences department myself, as I have nothing to do with it anymore (esp. the classic A&S majors like you listed), but the few guys I know who are in the college seem happy with it. One of those guys is my roommate.

I hope this helps; I really have no idea as to how the quality is.

My frosh english professors were pretty cool but they’re just grad students. /shrug. They were always available to meet with me when I had questions and stuff.

I’d imagine that study abroad would be easy as an A&S major, especially with the ones you listed.

I can’t say anything about research opportunities for those majors, I’ll be honest, I didn’t know that you could like…do research as a history or poly sci major…

Here is the link to curent A&S undergraduate research going on at Lehigh. I see nothing for history, but there is one study going on under Pol Sci. I just do not think those two areas have a ton of research opportunities due to the nature of the studies.

Would be great to also get input on the following….
Course registration – (how tough to get classes you want?, etc)
Grading – fair, tough, curves?
Quality of professors
Library & other study space available (is there enough? How about during
midterms/finals?)
Interested econ, history, political science in particular
