Current Lehigh Freshman, Answering Questions

Hey I’m also a freshman at Lehigh, applying to IBE program this spring. I have a 3.86 GPA and chances are (hopefully) I’ll be joining you and the 55 other current freshmen in the honors program next year.

I might already know you…Where are you living?

Stoughton, what about you?

@copaman: I’m a Mech Eng major, but I also wish to do a minor in Aerospace Eng and may be also Entrepreneurship. Does the college charge any extra bucks if u wish to do minors?? If yes, how much??

Trinitian:

I do not think so. I think that so long as you can line up your courses correctly, you will receive a major in Mech and a minor in Aero. I am 90% positive that that’s the case but I would call the school just to be sure.

i have some questions:

-how are the intermural/club sports (im interested in baseball) and how easy is it to get to all the sports fields?

-how is the student gym, i was reading on collegeporwler that it gets very crowded, is that true?

-i heard from my student tour guide that there is a “school jail”…

-how is the co-op program, is it hard to meet the requirements (3.75 gpa and above i think?) to get in

-do a lot of students go to the football and basketball games besides lehigh-laf?

-how is the local skiing?

if anyone can answer any of these questions that would be great, im interested in mechanical engineering…i visited the school in summer and i really liked everything, lehigh now is definitely one of my top choices

Are there many internationals? Do internationals get treated in a different way?
I’m asking this because I am an international myself and I really fell in love with this university. It is now my top 1 choice and I really want to get in.
How long after acceptence did you get your t-shirt? :D

Club teams honestly depend on the sport you’re trying for. I know the soccer team is competitive and cuts are actually made. Ultimate Frisbee was happy to take whoever, it seemed. For rugby, it was the kids who had hand eye coordination, weren’t scared of getting the crap tackled out of them, and were able to make it through a sprint-filled practice that began with a ~3 mile warmup. I am not a basketball player so I am not sure how the club team is. I honestly am not even sure if my residence hall had an IM BBall team… but that’s more because three or four of the guys who play basketball in my hall are actually on the Varsity team. I think other halls had them. IM soccer was huge back at the start of the year. It is very easy to get to the fields. If you don’t get a ride from an upperclassman (make contact with club team captains/presidents, it’s a big help), there is a bus that parks right outside the gym and everyone piles on and it goes up to the athletic fields.

The gym gets crowded depending on what time you go. If you’re the kind of guy who likes to spend 2 to 3 hours a day in the gym… You will see it busy a lot then. If you’re like me, and want to stay in shape and workout for an hour, hour and a half… there are times you can go when it is not crowded at all. I had a 3 - 4 hour break between classes M W and only one morning class Fri, so I would either use that break to work out, or nap. I can tell you that at 11am on a Monday, when everyone else is in class, there was no wait to do anything.

There is a school jail. I have never been there, but it does exist. The LUPD are a legit police department… but they are mainly there to make sure everyone is safe. I have heard that the Brownies/Rent-a-Cops that are on campus occasionally are actually worse than the actual LUPD officers. The LUPD is definitely more forgiving than the Bethlehem PD… I was walking back from a party one night on the hill and forgot to put my cup down as I left. Luckily for me I was only drinking orange juice (had to pick someone up from the bus stop that night, not good form to do that after a few alcoholic drinks), but I was stopped by an LUPD in the unmarked car. We talked a little, he asked me a few times what I was drinking in my Red Solo, and then he was on his way. I would bet money on the fact that the BPD would not be so nice about it.

I do not know much about the co-op program. Actually I honestly know nothing about it. It probably has a website on the school’s network? Try searching from the main page at lehigh.edu. I can tell you a 3.75 is no joke though.

Yes, MoCos (Morning Cocktails) and then Tailgates immediately after are huge for the home football games. Lots of kids go, it is a fun time from what I have heard. I was not able to go this year because of Rugby. Our games all happened at the same time as the football games, and it didn’t seem too smart to go to MoCos only to have to go to a rugby game right after. Basketball season just started, we played our home opener this week I believe against Navy… too bad there aren’t many people at school right now. I do not know about the basketball games yet but I can imagine they are fun as well.

I don’t really know about the local skiing yet, I’ve heard Blue Mountain is actually pretty fun considering it’s an east coast mountain in PA. IBE is taking a trip there next semester, sucks that I can’t snowboard this year at all (surgery on shoulder). There are a few spots around campus that make for awesome park style skiing/snowboarding; I have a buddy who made a quarter pipe out of the side of a residence hall last year. There are some great rails as well. Don’t get caught!

Vladic007:
There are a good number of internationals, I know a few myself. Internationals do not get treated any differently than the other students, we’re all very friendly here.

I don’t remember honestly, but I think it was when I arrived on campus the first day (arrived early because of PreLUsion). I will say, ask for a size larger than what you wear. The dryers shrink the living daylights out of everything!

Where do students live? (I mean dorms/suites/apartments) How many are there in a room? I saw you were talking about buying a desktop, is there enough space in the room for it? Are you paying for board? Is the food good there? What are the prices? Have you been to Philly or NY? How are the teachers? Are there any teachers, looking at whom you may think that the only thing circling in his head is “WTH do these students want from me?”. (I personally saw some of these and for them students are equal to nothing, they don’t answeer questions and think that you know nothing.) Or maybe such teachers are only in my country… By the way I’m from Moldova. (Eastern Europe)

thanks copaman! i just got an email that my application is complete so i checked out my portal and it says admissions decisions will be posted in march, but the school web site says april 1st, do any students get a RD decision before april 1?

vladic - I can probably answer the rooming questions. The freshman all live on campus in dorms. The largest is Dravo, but some get placed in Upper Centennial, Lower Centennial and M&M as well. Most rooms are doubles, but there are singles and triples scattered around. My son is in a double in Dravo. There is room for two beds, two desks a fridge with some floor space left over. There is one closet with shelving drawers etc… plenty of room for two guys. They have their beds set up so there is plenty of room for storage under the bed.

If you go to the website and go into housing you can see the floor plan for each dorm and size etc.

The food is really good, lots of variety and different places to eat. Pricing is on the tuition and costs part of the website.

Hey, should I buy a bike? And do varsity athletes get treated differently (any advantages?)?
Thanks! :P

Bring a bike only is you are into Xtreme sports. If you have visited you know, the campus is on a very steep hill.

Vladic

Mum hit the nail on the head for the housing/food arrangement. I live in Lower Cents and my roomie and I both have an open closet to ourselves. The food is good depending on where and what time you go. There are several different places to eat though.

There is definitely space in a room for a desktop… unless you’re thinking of bringing ENIAC.

You do have to pay for board.

Typically 2 to a room but sometimes 3 (much larger room with its own bathroom).

The teachers are all pretty great. I’ve heard from some of my friends that a few of the teachers have accents that are difficult to understand but I personally have not had that issue… yet…

Jdang:

Or if you’re good with motors etc, you could do what my friend did and slap a small engine on your bike. Much faster/easier to get to class, not bad on gas, and the same size as any other bike.

Varsity athletes do get some special treatment. I believe the varsity football team might get free meals sometimes but I am unsure about that. I know that before their in season, they are allowed to register for classes 30 minutes early, which makes an amazing difference. I am allowed 30 minutes early registration as an IBE student and it is pretty awesome.

Darknight:

I honestly do not remember. I think some of the ED applicants hear back early? There were 3 of us who applied to Lehigh from my school and we all heard back on the regular date.

do you know any students that received a full scholarship to lehigh? if so, what were their GPAs and SAT scores like?

Thanks guys. I have a few more questions
how much financial aid does a typical person who applied RD get?
and are there pool tables, ping pong tables, etc around campus?

Nerd4lyf93:

I have not heard of anyone getting a full ride but I know that Lehigh does award them to “The tip top of the applicant pool”… I can tell you a 3.87, 2010SAT, 700+ on all SAT IIs, 33 on the ACT, Very nice extracurriculars, and a schedule that is both challenging and interesting is not enough to net a full ride scholarship.

Jdang:
I cannot answer that for you and I’m sorry. I know that the maximum that a first-year can receive in the form of Stafford Unsubsidized Loans from the Govn’t is $5500. I am also on a $10K/Year scholarship.

There are pool/ping pong tables in the residence halls. My hall has a ping pong table, as does my best friend’s, but I know the hall attached to mine has a pool table.

How many people do you know who get 90% or more financial aid? (of course if there are any) what are their stats?

if u inlcude work study and student loan, i think i got a full aid…
My financial aid package(of $51800) covers complete BILLED EXPENSE of $51663…
But I was an EDI applicant…

@trinitian wow! that’s awesome! I read that you could contribute somewhere around 2k$ per year, in my case it’s the same.
I read that those who applied RD, especially internationals, have a greater chance of receiving a good fin. aid package! Is that true?

@Copaman Thanks for the info

How about South Mountain College? I received an email recently inviting me to look into it - Does this mean taking harder/extra courses? Is this something that will benefit me in the future with graduate school applications, etc.?
