Current Lehigh Freshman, Answering Questions

Nerd4lyf93:

I am not sure about South Mountain College; it seems that you would certainly have to take extra courses. Harder courses may well be a possibility. It looks like it is simply an alternative take on the traditional college learning experience, designed to facilitate intellectual discussion and development. I think it will help with Grad School applications.

@vladic007: well I’m not sure whether an ED applicants gets a good aid or an RD applicant.
But I think its ED applicants (incase of internationals) who get good aid because they choose Lehigh as their 1st choice and make a commitment to join incase the college meets their demonstrated need. The admission process is a little different for internationals. Unlike US citizens, who are mainly and largely supported by the government aid(FAFSA), the internationals have to fight among themselves to get the financial aid that the college provides on its own.Since the college has limited amount of fund for internationals, internationals might not get admitted even though they’ve better stats than some of the US applicants. I already know few internationals on Lehigh’s thread Lehigh class of 2015 who didnt get accepted even though they had gr8 stats because they had large financial need. May be RD applicants get good aid but they might accept less international RD applicants incase they get good internationals in ED round.Thats what I think but I’m not sure about this.Anyways, Goodluck with ur app. :)

To get the best merit aid, do you think it matters if you apply ED or RD? (US citizen)

Well, incase of merit based aid, I dont think it matters whether u’re an ED or RD applicant. As the name suggests, the aid is MERIT based and will be given to u if u do have great merits.I dont think merit based have anything to do with internationals or US citizen. Its the college supported grant that is competitive for internationals. Merit based aids are competitive for all applicants and it doesnt depend on ED or RD.

LINYMOM - Merit Aid is not determined by when you apply. It is based on GPA, strength of coursework, SAT scores etc. Also, as with many schools, it appears to be given most often to high achieving students who are unlikely to get financial aid, being just slightly above the fin aid threshold.

i’m really worried about not receiving enough aid. by the way i’m visiting next week! anyone have advice or anything?

Thanks, all. This has been a very helpful thread!

Jdang, Wear hiking boots if you have them - there are over 300 stair steps between the bookstore and the freshman dorms - it is quite a workout and a bit icy at the moment! Perhaps that is why I have yet to meet an over weight Lehigh student!

I hope you enjoy your visit!

Jdang515:

Yes… word of warning… Rush started this week for the guys and the girls got their bids on Monday.

i’m not familiar with rushing. But the way you worded it makes it seem like its not the best thing? lol

I am applying to Lehigh as a transfer for Fall 2011…I have not yet visited but I am eager to do so. I’ve been hearing that the surrounding area of the campus is quite bare with not much to do, I was wondering how true this is. If not, what is there to do off campus within the area?

What exactly does work-study typically entail? I was accepted under ED1, and that was a portion of my financial aid package. Part of me doesn’t want to accept the work-study portion…

Kbo: “…work-study portion…” good question! I wanted to ask the same thing. In plus what about work opportunities on campus and off campus? What is the average or minimum payment? Are there any limits on how much can one work while studying?

Work study jobs pay form 7.25 - 10.00 and hour. Right now they are posting for jobs in the Mac lab and at the gym. I also know many kids work in the admissions office and performing clerical work for the different departments. Coveted jobs are in the library, but are hard to find. I am sure most of the positions are pretty clerical in nature and are at the lower end of the pay scale. You may want to call the financial aid office and ask them some questions about the program.

My son’s roomate accepted work study first semester, but is delining it second semester as it was really hard to keep up with his studies with the hours he received from his work study assignment.

@Copaman

Is ENGR 1(Engineering Computations) the course you were referring to that includes a considerable amount of C++ programming? Thanks.

Brovan:

Yes it is. I heard rumor that the school was pulling the course for next year though.

can u find out exactly whether it is C/C++ and whether they’re pulling out the courses or not??

It is absolutely C++, I took the course last semester, the “textbook” DVD says C++ on the sleeve.

I cannot find out about them pulling it. That’s for the Registar’s office or whatever to know.

thanx bro!
its good that it is C++ coz i find C++ easier than C in terms of the syntax and coding structure!!!
By last semester, did u mean freshman year?Which semester exactly: 1st or 2nd? can u enlighten it?

Trinitian, My son took the course first semester freshman year. As Copaman said, it is definitely C++.
